Back in the olden days I did a lot of road cycling (Nishiki)even through the winters in PA. At my current weight I feel like I'm probably maxing out my Mountain Bike. Problem is it is geared so low that I can't get any decent speed (Yeah, it's probably better exercise, but several places I have to ride with traffic and would feel safer if I wasn't peddling like a bandit to hit 10 mph and like the road bike positioning better than riding upright on the MB) Is there a road bike that is robust enough that it could take a rider my size?

Well I do have an old($1,800)road bike (Nishiki - Campo equipped) that was a state of the art bike when I bought it a zillion years ago. Forgot the weight of the bike, but it was super light in it's day. Sew up tires and a frame that fits - it flys compared to the mountain bike. I think I use more calories just lifting my mountain bike off and on the storage hooks than I do riding the road bike all day. LOL
If I'm looking solely to burn calories spinning, I usually go to the gym and beat the He@@ out of the Life Cycle or Life Fitness machine - even though I would much rather be on the road. Plus - on the machines I don't have to coast down hill to do the repeats.
One other thing I do when I'm on the mountain bike is try to keep up with others on their road bikes - I don't do too well, but it's one heck of a workout!
Whatever you chose to do - get out, spin, crank, race or? - and have fun on the bike.

well, although a mountain bike may be heavier, it has smaller chain rings than a road bike, I'd think that you'd burn alot more calories doing intervals on a 20+ percent grade with a 53-39 rather than the smaller MB chain rings where you would just sit and spin the crank...Keep riding brother

| I ride my mountain bike on the street because it's a lot more work than my road bikes (burn them calories!)and because I got sick and tired of flats with the skinny road bike tires.

I got the cycleops FLuid2.
I haven't rode out doors in a long time. I can tell you that it is smooth and comfortable. The faster you pedal the more resistance it builds.

Rob, What model cycleops did you buy and how do you like it? How is your workout compared to riding out doors?

| I started riding again. and since its cold in NY as well I bought a Cycleops Indoor bike trainer. I can ride my bike indoors and get in to some shape so I can ride outdoors this spring. I like it so far.

I bought a second-hand Trek this spring and really got into riding it on local trails this summer. At the end, I got up to a 22 mile ride at about 15 MPH. I was very pleased with my progress.
It is a cold winter in Chicago, so no outdoor riding and I have ordered an indoor bike similar to a spin bike. I have not been able to do anything aerobic for over a month now and I can't wait to get started again.
I am not sure that I could ever get to 100 miles in a day, but it would sure be worth trying!

I started riding about five months ago; I started out riding a comfort bike w/ 18 speeds. I recently got my first road bike and love it. Since starting riding my longest ride is 37 miles and I have lost 20 lbs. Two goals for me this year is to ride 50 miles in single day before April and to ride my first century before the end of the year. The century ride goal scares me; but I think it is not out of my reach.
What goals have you set for the new year?
