Gotta say, I never played Rugby, though I enjoy watching the local college team.(men's and women's, OK, Mainly the women's) From what I see, it reminds me alot of the "street rules" football us neighborhood kids played back in high school. Full tackle, no pads, no blood-no foul.

I once knew a guy, who in the early 90's finally retired from the Army (he had to have been 50 or so, he did some time in leavenworth which counted against his retirement time).
He had spent his younger years in Viet Nam, even lived out the seige at Khe Sanh.
His first move upon retirement, go to college, and played varsity football. Really this guy was older than most of the players fathers, but he was out there getting tackled and tackling along with them (lineman).
So go ahead and get back into the game.

I work with some guys who played in college. I practiced some at USD, but never got the opportunity to play. Anyway, once we complete our weigh down it is likely we'll reward ourselves with some friggin' bloody fun on the sod. Don't worry Gramps, I won't let the London-Irish down.
