(im 5'4) but i dont like skinny ive never found it attractive. i like people with meat on there bones and thats what im aiming for :)
as for guys i like lots of different types of guys out of celeberties i love john travolta cuz hes so cool and ive loved him for so long lol and zach braff from scrubs i dont think hes hot but the character has such a cute personality so dorky i love it lol for real life guys im not to picky i like them big , chubby, lean. just not stick thin or super loaded with muscle.i like short to medium hair , not long girly hair, um i like dark to medium colord hair. i also like guys that are 5'4 (my height ) or taller but if you have a great personality i can ignore all looks and fall in love with you for the personality
so did that one girl ever start a spark team like she said she was thinking about?

Donkey on a waffle reference is from Ray Romano hosting Saturday Night Live and doing a skit about being a basketball commentator. He and his "partner" were trying to out-do each other when referring to a player hustling or moving well, etc. The other guy said one player went after the ball like a duck on a junebug and Ray said it was more like a donkey on a waffle. Funny if you saw it.
Even funnier than that is this tidbit. I'm on a list from Texas and the moderator just loved that skit and used the line every time he could - it really has stuck and he's trying to get it as a sniglet or something like that. Anyway, another gent on the list used the phrase with his nephew who just happens to be a CGI animator and was working on a [then] new animated film and thought the line was so funny he wanted his character to use it.
So, now, everyone.....think about an animated character in a full-length movie that was so good there was a whole new animated category built around it for an Oscar.
"We can stay up all night swapping manly stories, and in the morning, I'm making waffles!!" Donkey and Shrek.

Oh ya - I forgot to mention that the elliptical trainer is EXCELLENT for leg and knee strength building and is SO much easier on your knees while still giving you the cardio you want and need.
Stick with that machine!!
Well, I don't need or use any type of brace or support so that's something I can't address. I understand bad knees and I feel for you if you need those devices. For working out, I do low to medium impact such as a 6 inch step or just lots of knee lifts and some kicks [like tae bo]. I try NOT to do a lot of jumping or any type of impact or load bearing but still want to work the joints to build strength overall in my legs; learned that in physical therapy after surgery and injuries. I don't do consecutive aerobics; every other day and fill in with weights on the off days. Cardio for me isn't just the aerobics, though, since I have to walk to complete my fitness test for the Army and I walk at least 3 times a week. I find that walking is good in two ways for me in that I get the cardio I need and get better for the fitness test. Building the strength in my legs and especially the knee joints has really helped and I can now walk 12 minute miles and sustain it without much pain at all. Knowing that knee injuries and damamge is more pain management than anything else since my knees never seem to shut up, I'd put my normal level of pain at a 3 to 4 on a scale of 10 and after walking my 3 miles in 36 minutes, the level is up to 4 or 5 - so the strength training for legs and knees has paid off in the long run.
I use Power90 from beachbody and the cardio 3/4 level is just right and after 90 days I found I could actually go even longer and not have any additional pain. Sounds like a shameless plug, but the program doe swork and you can modify or change things up to suit your own personal needs and still get the benefits of the workouts.
Hey Splat,
What type of cardio do you do with your knees and all? I have the same problem (from car accidents) and by the 3rd consecutive day of working out man, they're achin'. I haven't wogged (my own personal combo of walking and jogging) for about 2+ weeks. Right now I'm using the elliptical/crosstrainer for an hour 5 days a week and even though its low impact I still have to wear braces to deal with the pain.

[head down, kicking dirt]
Okay - I won't. For at least a day or two!
I still say the ISP deserved what it got....
Jules is pretty tough, though. Dodging and ducking a clue by four and then going for a run - wow!
I'm going to start a new fitness program in November called Power90 Extreme from BeachBody.com. 12 DVDs with an hour workout on each disc. One of the workouts I don't think I'll be able to do because it's jumping and such and my knees may or may not handle it - we'll see how it goes. I'm supposed to not have impact on my knees but if I can walk 12 minute miles I should be able to tolerate *some* impact, I would think. At any rate, I think I'm ready to take my fitness to a higher and more challenging level. I guess I'd better order the discs this weekend!

Unfortunately California is losing a LOT of its military bases, probably because the land is so popular and pricey, though I don't know that that's the reason for sure, or even that that is why you won't be going there anymore.
Virgina might be nice though... not that Alabama wouldn't be - I just really know nothing about Alabama. (Outside of jokes, anyway... LOL)

Indeed it is! So rewarding and fulfilling but yet so serious. The soldier students had more fun going slow and taking 17 tons of truck through the woods at 5MPH than driving at 40MPH on the open roads. The sad part is that we were told this was the last hoorah, so to speak, in that Fort Hunter Liggett is no longer our annual traiing home and we will be moving to Alabama or Virginia for future years. Drat!
I'll try to get some short videos and pictures up on a private site if anyone is interested in seeing them.

He he he! As a matter of fact, it does!
I took the soldiers on what I call "The Rollercoaster", which is actually a very poor dirt road that winds, drops and climbs through a BUNCH of hills in our straight trucks and told them we were going to drive at 5MPH or less and they thought I was crazy until they learned that speed control and using the vehicle to climb and decline WAS possible and we didn't have to go 6 wheeling through the woods at breakneck speed. They had a blast and asked to do the route 2 or 3 times a day.

Good to be back, but I already miss putting on the uniform and training soldiers - I really enjoy what I do.
I actually LOST a pound and a half in Kahlifornya. I have no idea how that happened, but I did keep up with my workouts as much as training and time permitted. Now that I'm rested and feeling a bit better from the crud we all caught, I'm going to hit it hard again today and get back in the regular routine - I have a physical fitness test in 3 weeks to prepare for!

If all the right ingredients are there I think our bodies will self-regulate and stop at the best weight for us individually which is why my realistic goal weight is 150-160 about 20-30 pounds heavier than the charts but I look good and feel my best there.
Again, welcome back, SPLAT!

What a really nice sleep in MY OWN BED after those lousy bunks in California. GOOD to be back!
I'm at about 14.5% body fat and have good mucsle tone but most people tell me that 165 and 6'2" is too skinny. I'm not frail by any means but maybe could put 5 to 8 pounds back on. I've tried but my body likes the 165 mark. After the Army chow and the alcohol consumed [at least that much of the Army is still true] I should be 5 pound heavier but I"m not.
I'll still take a bit "skinny" over what I was any day!
Hey all!
Welcome back Splat! We missed ya'
Russ I know what you mean about those so called insurance charts. When was the last time they were revised? The hydrostatic scale is supposed to be the most accurate weight method, so at only 10% body fat you were lean to say the least regardless of your overall weight.
I basically agree with everyone else who said that we individually have to find what works for us and I know from experience my ideal weight will not be 130 pounds as listed on the charts. At that weight, people can tell how big my head really is...LOL
Did I mention my nickname growing up was Apple & Watermelon head?

"Something to grab onto"
This is something guys look for too. It's really a beautiful thing. :)
As far as being healthy, my idea of healthy is way different from the BMI index because when I was between 225-230 on paper I was overweight but according to the water tank I was carrying just under 10% body fat. When I was 212, coming into college, I was actually carrying about 17% fat. (No muscle tone. Had rarely touched weights in high school) My goal is to be about 230 again. Maybe not the same muscle tone since I'm trying to hit white balls around the course now.

Before I married my husband he spent 2 years in Japan and came back at about 167, which I suppose is a bit light even for 6', but he looked emaciated and like a little old man! Frail is a GOOD word for it. Those height/weight charts are totally unreasonable. His doc told him he simply shouldn't go under 200 - it's right about the right weight for his height and frame. I don't mind if it's a little bit more, either, if it's muscle, LOL.
I really DISLIKE hugely muscled guys, but lean and toned and defined is nice. I've never liked what I call the "kicked in the chest by a mule* look. I'd rather a guy has a few extra pounds on him than be scarecrow thin. Anyway, a little bit of love handles can be fun to grab onto!
| 230 is a sweet weight for me too. I was 230 through most of college. 20 lbs more muscle was the difference between a good time and a great time in college
I know what you mean about getting the frail look at the supposed target weight the medical types give. When I used to fight karate tournaments(I was about 18 at the time), I was trying to cut weight to fight a lower weight class. I was 236(supposed to be 180) at 6'2", and was trying to make 185. When I got to about 209, you were able to see my ribs, and I was having fainting spells. I actually face planted in the middle of a sparring session, which was funny to everyone else until they realized I wasn't joking around. Needless to say, Sensei ordered me to start gaining some weight back. I have too say 236 was my best fighting weight, I was pretty chiseled, and strong as an ox.(what the hell happened to me??LOL) Honestly, I looked horrible at 209, my muscle build and tone I had at 236 was gone, and I looked weak. It was a lesson learned though, there is a "too thin" to be healthy.
| Some guys feel the body image issue just as hard as women do. I bulked up from the age of 15 to about 28. Even now, as I lose weight, I'm mindful of being skinny. I can't see myself at 190 but that is what would work for the average man my height. That just seems like I'd be frail. I'm pretty sure that's just my own insecurity talking.

SPLATMAN IN THE HOUSE!!!!
Doing well....I'll be home LATE Friday night but home nonetheless. Wrapped up the final exam this morning and 11 new highly trained and motivated truckers for Uncle Sam. no injuries, incidents or accidents - MISSION COMPLETE!
On a side note - went to Monterey and had dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Compaany. There was a VERY fine and handsome woman across from us with this big ol' body builder [Southern Kahlifornya, don't ya know], and every time this guy moved, it was like he was posing!
Tone and strength is great, but that body building and bulk is just too much. I think the ego inflates proportionately to the muscles.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. Makes me feel a lot better about having a little extra curvage.
When I look at myself I see that I need to lose weight, but I also see that I have nice curves (small waist, larger hips, etc). Now it's just dropping those extra 30 pounds to make them even more defined :)
NOW what I'd like to say about the guys:
Huge muscles aren't attractive-in my opinion. I've met plenty of slightly bigger guys who I thought were attractive, and not muscly, but I actually prefer the skinnier guys. My boyfriend weighs 130 lbs. LOL. But he feels just as unattractive sometimes as a women 30 lbs OVERweight would feel. So it's a nice balance and we work out together and will probably end up weighing the same once we get to our peak. I wish there were just some operation in which I could just give him the fat that I don't want. Haha.
I know we're all here to LOSE weight-but, I guess my point is that I go for the less conventional look. Good style and working what you have are most important to me. ANYONE can be sexy as long as they know who they are-and that goes for either sex.
Hehe...had to state my opinions.

What time are you usually on? And what time zone are you? I'm Pacific TZ, and usually on during the morning or the day - rarely in the evenings. The dog was worth more than you probably woulda been willing to pay. I mean, he was a mutt, but I'd spent literally hundreds of hours training him. I've never had a better hiking buddy, he'd bring in the newspaper, he even helped me clean the house! I could stop him on command, have him jump over or crawl under a barrier with voice commands. Just about everybody who came to the house wanted him, lol. The only thing I hadn't managed to train him to do (that I'd wanted to) was track, or fetch by scent discrimination.
Unfortunately he's gone now... and we've not gotten another. Life's been too crazy, and now the kids will be gone I'd like to do some traveling, and that's harder with a dog. Especially a big one... and I do think size matters, LOLOL.

I hope when you said "BF at the time" that you meant you kicked his sorry ass to the curb for bringing you down!

See? MUCH better now!
Anyone have any spare testosterone handy? My daughter, her daughter, my girlfriend, her daughter and her two daughters are all here this weekend.
The dog and I are kinda out-numbered around here!
[not that it's all bad, mind you! just that the estrogen pool is pretty deep]

SPLATMAN: ROTFL, LMAO
Okay, okay I give...(Splash)...Did you hear that SPLATMAN, that was me jumping in...
Thanks for the invite guys~
I agree, curvy is in the eye of the beholder. When I wore a size 12, I considered that curvy, yet my BF at the time considered me down right fat cuz he was used to very slender women size 4-6.

NO FAIR LURKING!!
If you're going to come to the pool, you're going to jump in. Simple as that.....water's fine here so don't stay in the shadows!
Besides - it's more fun with more folks!

Kat, feel free to come out of the corner and talk anytime.
Curvy and age: I don't know if it's an age thing necessarily because my opinion of what is curvy to me has stayed pretty constant over the years. And then again it's in the eye of the beholder. Everybody has their interpretation of what looks attractive so that woman you saw as 5-10 lbs. overweight might have been that guy's dream.
| Hi Kat & all Sp fans! I like this thread as well. I feel like I've always been honest about my weight. With that being said, I have found that many men (not all of course) have different definitions of "curvy." I have had many guy friends that have pointed out curvy and I'm thinking that's not curvy that's maybe 5-10 lbs. overweight! Do you think that would also be an age thing on how men view curvy???
Hi all,
I just had to say this is the hands down, the best thread on SP!
Men-thanks for direct, honest answers Female participants-thanks for asking the questions most women have but are afraid to ask
Now, I'm going back to my lurking post...

OH. If you mean like comfortable in my own skin... *that* I am. (Especially since it's a bit roomy since I've lost weight! HEE!)
I just wouldn't say I'm confident in my abilities to *do* a lot of things.
True - arrogance is a turn-off and distractor.
Confidence in who you are and what you do - more like being sure of yourself and comfortable with yourself without being snobbish or arrogant.....that kind of confidence!

Self-respect I've got. Now confidence...??? LOL
I guess I do have it in some areas... and I guess none of us are confident in all areas, huh? (Or are the people who have confidence in *all* areas just considered arrogant? LOL)
And confidence and self-respect are attractive!
Interestingly enough, those two items don't come in any particular share or size....

| Russ1925 - I like your advice. A little confidence goes a long way....

ASPEN, I feel fat everyday. I have a new job where i sit at a desk and do not move alot. I am eating more and more. The ability for me to use the gym here at lunch is non existant. I am the only guy and cannot leave for that hour. I am waiting for new hires to come in so i can go run for about 30 minutes everyday.
Now when ti comes to the "choice" women that I prefer. I prefer the athletic woman. The woman who does not have a magnetic attraction to the tv and can actually leave it for awhile and not go into withdrawals (sp?)

Hey Zaxdad... a question. If you're only 5 lbs from your goal, how could a skinny woman make you feel fat? LOL
Good job on being so close to goal! How does it feel (for those of us who have a ways further than 5 lbs to go, LOL)??
I feel soooo much better and stronger from my training than I did before that sometimes it's hard for me to remember I still have so far to go. And I can't even imagine what I'll feel like then, because I feel SO GOOD now.
| I personally do not mind the "curvy" women as long as they are confident about themselves. I prefer a woman with "meat" on her bones because the skinny minnies out there tend to make me fell fat and i will not stand for that. I only need to lose 5 more pounds to be at my target goal

| When I was younger, men wanted skinnier women. (I was so not that) Now, being older and back on the market, I am finding men do like "curvier" women. From my own research, its mainly because at "my age" we are more confident, know what we want, and are less likely to be anal about our looks. Its a good thing too. I will always be curvy. Thats not a bad thing. Besides, I have an issue with skinny men. They just plain scare me. lol

Mmmmmmmmm....... dessert!! *sighs dreamily*
*shakes head, drags attention back to discussion at hand*
That's true... but it's pretty much the same thing, isn't it?
kar·ma [kahr-muh] –noun 1. Hinduism, Buddhism. action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation
Yup... just desserts, inevitable results, either way Russ is wise to steer clear of it, LOLOL.

Be_Fearless - what girl code? LOLOL Yeah, we're on the guys board here, we can just say what we think, LOL. (You can even scratch yourself or burp and no one cares.)
And yup, you've got it right. There's nice to look at just for fun but you'd never want to live with them, and there's the real world where the man makes you feel like you're the center of his universe (but he's not a slave to your desires, either). We just want to be loved and appreciated for who we are.
Heck, unless I'm very mistaken the guys feel the same way.
And Tara, you're right - we shouldn't categorize good-looking people as mean and selfish, because they aren't, all of them. We're all just who we are.
| i agree, some guys are better looking than others but i'd rather the one who makes me feel special and hopefully i can do the same for him. to me the outside doesn't make a different bc once u get to know someone it really doesn't matter what they look like. some of the most good looking ppl in the world r mean and selfish, and i don't care to be around ppl like that. not to say that many good looking ppl aren't nice, it goes both ways.

Hope I'm not breaking the girl code here, but uhm... we do talk about what we like about men (just maybe not on the same boards where we talk about what we don't like about our hips this week).
Scanning through the thread, there seems to be a theme -- there's what we like in the real world, warming our own beds, and then there's the eye candy.
I like the guys on Grey's Anatomy. I find it amazing that all those surgeons would have so much time to work out. ;) But, you know when those guys are their sexiest? When they're looking at their women with love in their eyes. ::::melting::::
In the real world, I'm more into brains, wit, confidence, direction, and how a man treats people than how he looks. For me it's not about waistlines, or hairlines -- it's about how I feel when I'm with him. Am I proud of him because he's a good human being? Does he make me feel special? Does he make me laugh (and laugh at my jokes?) Does he look at me with those deer-caught-in-headlight eyes when he doesn't realize he's staring (and just got caught)? That's hot!

Russ just likes his appendages where they currently are!!!!
Very politically correct way of saying "self preservation"!

| i feel like i have to say sorry for my comments and i am if it offended anyone, but all i was trying to say was just that, that people do have different opinions on what is attractive. and the reason i'm thinking plus size women in this case being that the women was 185lbs. that asked the question i'm sure she wanted to know what man thought about women more our size, and again im sorry if thats not what she meant. i totally agree with u guys, people r completely different and can be attractive to many different things and curvy can be taken different ways and most women do have curvys and i'm sure theres men out there to love them all. and just for the record i think jessica biels hot too.

You got me laughing there, Russ! Way to avoid the bad karma! *walks off giggling*

| I don't think that curvy is only reserved for plus size. My wife is curvy in her clothes. I won't say the size. I think that along with a women's age, letting out my wife's clothing sizes is just bad karma. I'll say that she can go to Mervyn's and fit the stuff they put in the ads
| Ok, i am the one that posted the Jessica Biel had a nice body. If you read a little further down tara you would see that were talking about actresses that had a body that wasnt rail thin yet not plus size. Jessica Biel does have an awesome fit body. There is nothing wrong with stating that. It doesnt mean that we think she is the ideal role model for curvy women. Do you have to be plus size to be considered curvy?

I absolutely agree, Splatman. And it works just as well for guys as it does for girls - meaning that what I would consider a great looking guy might not be the next girl's idea of the same.
And aren't we all glad for that, or we'd all be fighting over the same girl or the same guy! I love diversity in looks (and my hubby doesn't mind me looking (as long as I'm discreet), LOL - but that's another topic, hee!) and am interested when I find a different type of look in a man OR a woman that I realize is attractive. I think that's one of the greatest drawbacks in Hollywook - they try to make everybody look alike and then I get to where I can't tell anybody apart! LOL And I'm talking body type or facial looks or hair or whatever.
We are all real people in the real world and look like ourselves and that's worth celebrating! Let's just all try to look (and act) like our very best selves and think what a contribution we will make to the world!
Thank you.
*steps off soapbox* LOL

Now the word subjective comes in to play. Perfect is just like beauty and it's in the eye of the beholder in that it's subjective.
I think the "examples" given are based on personal values/standards/ideals of the subjective "perfect" or "curvy" rather than a collective agreement.
No harm, no foul?

| i'm very sorry russ for the my comment i never meant it to be taken that i thought you guys didn't like real women or women of a certain size. it just kind of bothers me that most men think of women like jessica biel when asked what kind of woman they're attracted to, when there are very beautiful women like kirsty ally more like most of us real women. i believe there is perfect, i think perfect is different to everybody bc i think my kids and my husband are perfect and i may not be the most beautiful woman in the world but to my husband i am. thats really all that matters is that if your happy with what you have than thats perfect.

Or any of the pop singers who look positively starved...
