I liked the Lions draft. To me it sucks to say (since I'm a Packer fan) but the Lions, Bears and especially the Vikings all had good drafts. All three teams added potent offensive weapons in the first round.

I don't care about the Lions past history of drafting wideouts, they had to take Calvin Johnson at #2. This guy is a beast and will be a top three wideout for years to come. Especially in Mike Matrz's offense and especially if they get some type of stability at QB. If Johnson somehow becomes a bust, the Lions might as well withdraw from ever picking a wide receiver in the draft ever again because they're just cursed.

Picking up Drew Stanton in the second round was a good choice. He's a local product and if he gets time to work with Martz and learn from the sidelines he could be good.

What do you guys think about the Detroit Lions picks?

I think they did what they were supposed to do and that was to take the best available player, but, I think history just repeats itself, they still do not have the QB or running game to pass the ball to their top pick. I am not too heart broken since the Bear will play them twice a year and those are relatibly easy wins.

Quinn will be ok but just as any rookie QB he will strugle at first, if he can sit for a year and watch and learn he can be good next year. But I am not sure the Browns will let him sit for long.

I'm still not sure why Cam Cameron got a head coaching job. The last time I remember him being a head coach he was coaching Indiana in the college ranks. They scored a lot of points, had an interesting offense and a very bad record. Cameron is a lot like Norv Turner. He's good in specialized situations (working with QB's/offense) and horrible at being a head coach and key decision maker.

I can't believe all the criticism Brady Quinn has been getting. Is he the next Tom Brady? No, but he's not going to be a bust either. Quinn suffered the same way Matt Leinart suffered last year. They were two high profile QB's at big time programs who decided to stay for their senior year. For that, they had everyone nitpicking at every little flaw. Brady Quinn will do just fine in the NFL and I don't see any reason why he can't be a top 10 QB in this league in due time. With that said, had Quinn come out last year, I would not have taken him before Young, Leinart or Cutler.

Rob,

Cam doesn't think. How do you run the entire 2nd half of a playoff game with the the most dominant running back in the league not part of the strategy? Cam's the guy that came up with that winning strategy. Moving him to Miami insures that the dolphins will be a bottom feeding team for a couple years until they fire him of course.

Sigtau,
You're right in that the running will be a big factor for him especially early in his career. I don't think JL is that much better than Droughns at this stage in his career. I think the O-line play will ultimately determine his effectiveness as it does for all running backs. Case in point: Edgerrin james did nothing with the slop the Cards had as a line last year. But, I look for them to be much improved under my old Steeler coaches. I've adopted them as a rooting interest.

He'll have weapons, that's for sure. A lot of rookie QB's don't walk into a situation with a solid TE and WR already in place. I'm sure he was glad to go to a team that already drafted Joe Thomas as well. (since Frye was sacked 44 times last year)

The running game will be important for his growth in the league, I wonder how much Jamal Lewis has left in the tank - but he's a big upgrade over Droughns.

I think Quinn will be alright. Remember he played for Weis who ran an NFL style offense.

The Jets made a decent move for the cornerback but they needed more bodies. Only time will tell.

I would like to thank Cam Cameron for keeping the Dolphins as the worst team in the AFC east. What are they thinking?
RUSS1985

It comes down to how smart Quinn plays the position. Not every great QB in history has had a cannon for an arm. And not every QB with that cannon (read: Cryin Ryan Leaf) makes a good QB.

As far as his accuracy, it will come down to how many times he tries to thread the needle and force his throws. If he's smart, Quinn will probably not lose the Browns too many games and that's not a bad knock on him, in the long run.
LITTLE-LUEY
5/2/07 11:04 A

Quinn is suposed to be a very smart player, it will also depend on who gets to work with him (QB coach), I will give him a couple of years before I say he is not going to make it.
M8-2-WIN

I believe Quinn will become an average to slightly above average QB over time. His biggest weakness supposedly is his accuracy. I didn't see him play enough in college to agree/disagree. But, from the little I did see he didn't strike me as a future superstar.
SIGTAULEFTY

I don't think Quinn turns out to be a great NFL QB. His arm strength is suspect and although he ran a pro-style offense in college, he ran it against weak teams. When he faced teams like Michigan and USC he struggled.

A little dissapointed the Packers didn't try and make more of a run at Randy Moss. The Packers receiving corps is pretty thin with our only true option being Donald Driver. I'd love to see how many NFL QB's could succeed with out wideouts. Keyshawn Johnson was released by the Panthers today. Maybe the Pats can sign him and up their WR total to 25.

I also wasn't happy with the Packers draft. I was extremely upset when the Niners drafted Patrick Willis because that meant the Bills would draft Marshawn Lynch. That left the Packers drafting Justin Harrell who was a HUGE reach. If that was the guy we really targeted we should've traded down. Especially with Brady Quinn still available.

Brady quinn the steal of the draft they say. he is very good, but i was thrilled to see Adam C. go ahead of him GO BIG RED!!!

I think the Moss trade was a calculated risk, the team thinks that Moss will be too ocupied catching balls from Brady so he will not have time to get upset at fans displaying their displeasure for having him there long enough for the fans to have a change of heart.
This trade will work just because of the team, i don't think many other teams could have/would like to take a cancer guy like Randy Moss.
RUSS1985
4/30/07 6:47 P

That might be the case. He's not going to get any faster with age. Conventional wisdom is that he starts the cadillac like he's done the last couple years of his career and after a couple of years he leaves for a 6th round pick in Detroit.
M8-2-WIN
4/30/07 2:42 P

Any thoughts on how the Steelers did in the draft. Obviously its early and it will take a couple of years to judge accurately but last years draft didn't net that many players.
M8-2-WIN
4/30/07 2:40 P

I think Moss will revert to the highly productive receiver he was when he first came into the league. The winning attitude and the focus the Pats have exhibited over the last six years will rub off on him. My guess is he got disgusted in Oakland because there was no hope of winning anything. I may be wrong and he could play like a dog again but if he does Belichek and Co. will quickly show him the door. Even without Moss the Pats are scary good.
RUSS1985
4/30/07 1:22 P

Isn't this the same Moss that most people have kind of considered a cancer for the past two teams he's been on (Vikings, Raiders)? Is he somehow going to become St. Randall now that he's playing in Foxboro, or is he just going to go to a place where he hasn't ticked off the fans yet?

I'm speechless now that I'm not sitting at the screen with my son. I enjoyed my little glimpse of the picks and the crazy amount of knowledge you guys have about this stuff! I'm very happy with the Cowboy's decision to trade that instead of going with one of the WRs available.

I knew that trade was happening around pick 15 when he was still free-falling and that if he was around at 22 then Dallas would either get him or trade the pick. Dallas had no immediate needs that can't wait until next year, so having 2 #1 picks next year is hot! Plus, there will still be value in the early second round.

Hi, I'm here with my son, so we're half-guys, K? I'm learning about the draft and the rest of my smart comments are his. Go Blue! Go Patriots!

Alan Branch is dropping too. Apparently coaches think he's lazy. I think Bill Belichick might be the guy to light a fire under his a$$. If he falls that far I think he would be a great addition to the already dominant Patriot's Defensive line, don't you?

16 picks in and no one picks Brady Quinn. Dude's in freeefall!

Miami passes on him thinking that Culpepper is going to be the man. Proof positive that Cam Cameron is a crack fiend.

Yeah but he's supposed to be the real deal. They aren't going to be contenders on that pick but they will be better, just because they won't be getting their QB killed every week.

Well now Moss has no excuse. Russell can throw it the length of the field.

Oh look The Lion take a wide receiver. What a surprise. Who's going to throw to him in Detroit? Kitna?

I agree about Gallery. We need to get rid of the guy. I am not really sure I wanted Russell. I think I would have rather seen us trade and get Quinn and have taken Calvin Johnson. Moss has been to lazy. We need to drop him too. lol

I agree Leonard is probably not going to end up as a feature back. He could turn out to be one of the best 3rd/4th down backs in the league.

The Draft will follow suit or go haywire depending on what the Lions do at #2. They can go so many ways. It will be interesting to see how much a team offers them to trade out of that spot with either Russell or Johnson available.

All the Mock Drafts have had the Packers taking Marshawn Lynch in the first round forever up until recently. Now the consensus seems to be Miami TE Greg Olsen who's also on the Panther's raidar. I'll be cool with taking Olsen if we can get a good back in round two (Kenny Irons or Antonio Pittman). I also think a team would be wise to take a chance on Michael Bush if he's available late in the draft.

If the Packers and Bills both pass on Lynch he could really freefall because there aren't many teams with needs at running back left in round one other than maybe the Titans.

I think Brian Leonard will be a strong player in the NFL for years to come but I don't see him as a team's feature running back. I see him as more of a hybrid type back. It will be interesting to see where he gets drafted.

Down here in Charger country, we need a safety with a serious dysfunctional love of hitting people. If we can't get that, bring in a tall, possession oriented wide receiver to play catch with Rivers.

Hey Tekguy, at least you claim your team. Big props from us down in San Diego.

I still say your best bet is to drug Al Davis and trade that pick for more people. At the very least trade Robert Gallery for a waterboy with Ricketts and you will have already improved the line.
MBRODY503
4/26/07 2:00 P

BL will be a fine pro!! Honestly I like him best in the Patriots offense since they mix it up so much and would do a decent job with a "tweener" RB/FB like him. But I couldn't bring myself to buy and wear a patriots jersey. Any other team and I'll proudly wear the 23.

Agree on Bush he is a nice injury slip down the board that may pay big dividends.

Go to any RU games last year? What a ride. I had tix to the uconn game and after that managed to beg my way into the louisville game.

Wow, talk about coincidence, I'm also a Rutgers grad and a STEELERS fan. Although, I'm not sure about either Pozlusny or Leonard. I think they both definitely have the heart and determination, just not sure if they have the physical skills to be successful in the NFL. I would loke to see the Steelers add Michael Bush in the 3rd or 4th round. It's a gamble with his injury history but it could really pan out if he is fully recovered.
MBRODY503

Steelers fan and Rutgers grad, so I'm pulling for Brian Leonard in the 2nd round!! I think they're going to take Pozlusny in the 1st and I'd be okay with that.

Niner fan here, we have #11. Big need at LB so I would go that route, followed by some WR, or S help. Not really a big draft fan but I'll be watching the first round, of course.

Consensus around here in pats territory is that we trade pick #28 for a second round pick and a number 1 pick next year. Who we take at number 24 is anyones guess but I'm thinking a Safety.

I'm a Bears fan, I'd love to see Green Bay take Ginn. I think he's all speed and not much else. I put him in my overrated pile.

As for Chicago, I'd like to see them move Briggs and the #31 to Washington for the #6 and Rocky McIntosh. (not likely)

Then depending on who is available, hopefully Quinn is still on the board, trade with Miami to pick up another 2nd or 3rd rounder and at 9 take either OT Levi Brown or DT Amobi Okoye.

If we got a 2 from Miami, we'd have the #37 and #40, where we could go OLB Jon Beason and possibly G Ben Grubbs or TE Zach Miller.

That would be ideal for me.
BRIANW-76

Cowboy fan hoping they get the highest value at either Safety or WR when it gets around to their pick. Lots of good picks on the board, but we need a 1st round selection of one of those two positions.

I'm still pretty dumbfounded they picked Carpenter last year, let's hope they are a little smarter this go-round.

So what's everyone teams and who would you like your team to draft in the first round.

I'm a Packer fan and I'd love to get Adrian Peterson (not happenning) or Marshawn Lynch with #16 overall. We need a new starting running back with the departure of Ahman Green and I'm a fan of both guys. I would also accept taking a back in round two such as Kenny Irons and getting Ted Ginn Jr in the first round.

Yes - Us JETS fans always boo who ever is picked. Look at their history.

Some wonders:

Kyle Brady
Blair Thomas over Emmit Smith
Ken O'Brien over Dan Marino

Hopefully this year they can get someone who can get to the QB.

LOL, good point Russ. I remember when I was at the 2005 NFL Draft. The Jets didn't have a first round pick and once the middle of the second round came along the Jets fans were going nuts in anticipation. Then it was announced, the NY Jets have selected Mike Nugent, KICKER, Ohio St. I swear I thought some of the Jets fans were going to jump off of the balcony after the Jets picked a kicker that high. The Jets fans got a lot of crap from everyone there after that pick.

Charger fan picking #30 in the first round. I'm looking forward to what they go after in the draft. I'd love to see them come back with a fast young receiver with good hands but we'll see. I can't wait for the sights and sounds of the draft. My favorite is:

Commisioner: "And with the 25th pick the New York Jets select...."

Crowd: "Booooo!"

This is how I know it's football season again!

I actually went to the NFL draft two years ago. It was free and lots of fun. Especially when you get to hang out with fans from all over the country, see NFL players and ESPN personalities like Mel Kiper Jr. It's also interesting to see the whole setup of the draft and you get some nice freebies too. If anyone is close to NYC you should definately try and make it. Just get there early.

It's fun to watch the post-draft shows. And then, wait a few years and see -- go back to the 2002 NFL draft.

One of the top players in the league, Ed Reed, picked #24 overall. It's fun to go back and see where teams messed up.

Bears fan here as well, not sure who they will pick, but defensive back or a ofensive lineman would be good based on the injuries they had last year. I don't get too much in to the draft because I don't know most of the college guys anyway. The draft is like not a sure thing, when you think one guy is solid pick they bust and some guys you don't spect much from they do great.

I know a guy who went to Michigan with Brady. He was a manager on the team, and scout team option QB. He is a big Pats fan, and it's tough to discount anything that organization does with it's picks. I don't think any team does more with less.

looking forward to draft day. might go to a party, might just watch it with my family (my sister is recovering from recent surgery, and is a HUGE jets fan, as is the rest of my family). we have pretty late picks, but i am interested to see who buys brady quinn's self-promotion. i think the guy will eventually be a decent NFL QB, but i wouldn't spend a #1 draft pick on him - i still think jamarcus russell should be the 1st pick.

I've always been a big draft fan. I'm a Bears fan, and it's a mystery as to what they're going to do. I know their management hates to pay players first round money, so I wouldn't bet against them trading out of the first round again this year - even if they moved Briggs to move up in the first round, they'll swap that pick for multiple later rounders.
