| When I got the Wii I just planned on playing around and didn't expect the exercise that was to come, I was so surprised when I hurt the next day from playing tennis the day before. Pleasant surprise. I only wish it had some sort of way to tell how many calories that I burned. The boxing is also an amazing work out, I would suggest getting a Wii to anybody who loves video games and needs a little exercise.

| Sorry I wanted to let eveyone know about my experience with the Wii so far. I like it alot because I am mixing somethig I love to do with something I need to do. I have gone down almost 2 pant sizes and my upper body is starting to shape up. My arms are getting definition with the boxing game and I think you will all get results if you do not cheat at it. Really go after it like you are actually doing it. Box like your really boxing with moving around and throwing full hard punches. Swing the controller like you would in tennis. Do not cheat you are making the system usless then. Good luck.

| Just wanted to let everyone know about a new team that I just formed that is for gamers that want to get fit called Gamers Fit. It is brand new and does not have any memebers. Anyone interested can visit it and join. Thanks

| Guitar Hero actually gets me pumped. I usually stand and jump around to get some poses down. I never set to play the game and if you play on Hard or extreme you get some serious fretwork!

| Try tennis. returning forehands and backhands and jumping around the living room should get your blood moving.

TomCoffee.. what games did you play on Wii to get a decent workout? I only have time to work out after my kiddo is asleep late evenings. I'm in a rut with dvds and thought about buying a Wii to help with the monotony. I loved the boxing game that I played while visiting my brother. :D

You know whats better than playing the Wii? Actually going outside and doing stuff. Nah, never mind video games are better. Love, The chop

Yes, the Nintendo Wii can be a good workout. It's what I used, but like anything you get out of it what you put into it. I wore wrist weights while playing Wii Sports for 30 minutes a day or so. You get a pretty good workout as long as you keep playing with full motion and don't cheat by just flicking your wrists here and there...

| What about the Nintendo Wii ? That looks like quite a good work out ?

I lost 16+ pounds using the Nintendo Wii and wrist weights. I'm not much of a DDR fan, but I'm going to give it a try again in the near future...
There are some sites out there and specialize in video game fitness and weight loss options... all sorts of neat stuff...
I also liked using the Eye Toy with Antigrav for the PlayStation 2.

By the way, if you get a USB dance pad, you can try a freeware DDR-type game called StepMania, too: www.stepmania.com
My cheapo pad has been working pretty good, but it's near impossible to get a AA rating on a song with it...

I got tired of running so I picked up a cheap dance pad and DDR for PS2. I wear my heart rate monitor when I play, and I usually burn 400+ calories per hour. This is doing a solid half hour of songs rated Difficult (which keeps my heart rate between 140 and 170), then another half hour of less intense songs in the showdown mode to unlock more stuff to do.
The great thing is, it's so fun, I can DDR until my legs collapse. :) Today I did over 800 calories. I was really into it and DDRed for almost 2 hours.

Here is a site with some info on the different pads. I would like to get good enough to warrant the expense of a metal pad.

I end up getting a pretty solid workout from just 30 minutes of DDR.
The constant moving is good for cardio, and the calf muscles get worked over pretty hard from all the jumping and bouncing around.
Now I just need to find a better mat and I'll be set.. heh

I just got DDR Universe on my 360. The Basic mode is pretty easy but teaches you about the game. There are a bunch of training mini games on the Basic mode to walk you through some of the more advanced steps.
Once you switch over to the main game mode, things get more intense. I spend a lot of time bouncing all over the mat without much success. It is a great workout though. Under work out mode you can set your weight and turn on the calorie counter. At the end of each song it will show your calories burned.

I'm doing DDR on the Xbox 360 for 30 mins a day 3 days a week and it seems to be a nice way to get in some exercise without really thinking too much about it.
I wouldn't mind getting the Nintendo Wii if they'd ever get it in stock for more upper-body type exercises, seems in theory like a good way to try to balance it out from upper/lower body.

| i hear that playstations ddr can really get your heart rate up, but i read a great article in working in exercise to things like television, movies or video games. basically, you play the game, etc. like a drinking game. if you're playing a sport game, do ten jumping jacks every time you score. if you're watching a tv show, say...american idol, do some push-ups every time the judges insult someone.

| I have played baseball on the XBOX while riding the recumbent bike. I don't think I am getting a good workout though because I am not concentrating on the quality of the workout.

So I picked up a dance pad yesterday. It was a cheap one from Gamestop (cost $20). I have read that some of the cheap pads bunch up or just aren't responsive enough when playing on hard mode. I still haven't picked up the software yet so I'll find out soon if it sucks or not.
I have never played DDR before so I figure I won't be getting to hard mode anytime soon. If it works out and I can stick with it I may get a better pad.
There is no doubt that for the first few times I will look like the fat guy in this video:

Hi there,
I actually use DDR for PS2 for my cardio exercise. It can be a great high-impact aerobic if you do it right and keep going at it.
I do recommend getting a high-end pad like an Octane for it, something with .5 to 1 inch padding so that you don't totally kill your feet.
I've gone down from 366 to 346 (just this morning) in the last couple of months, and that was just with DDR and not controlling my diet.
Let me know if you'd like any pointers about it.

| I mostly play baseball on my PS2 - and what I've done with that is during the cut scenes between innings, I'll get 15-20 crunches in. So by the end of a game, I've done almost 250 crunches.

While I haven't used them as a weight loss plan, I have used them. They will definitely work on your exercise plan if you do it correctly. I know there are other people around SP who have used them as part of their strategy.

I need to set up an exercise regimen but with my work/family schedule I don't have time to hit the gym or really even go out for a run much of the time.
I was thinking maybe investing in one of those dance games for my Playstation 2 and getting a dance pad.
Has anyone tried this as an exercise and weight-loss strategy?
