I love an occassional cigar. In fact I worked part-time in a cigar store in the evening for a while just to learn about cigars. I prefer, Avo, Ashton, Cuesta Rey, Butera and a couple of others.
I would say the best cigar for the price would be a Montesino (especially aged for a while in your humidor)
The best cigar I've ever smoked has to be the Padron Aniversario (madaro) - although they changed the name to Aniversary after I think 1999 they are still a great cigar.

Thanks Matt for the advices! I'll look around for a good reputed cigar place! I like to comparison to a wine store. Here in TN, most people in liquor stores don't know anything about wine, drives me nuts! Anyway, thanks and have a great one! Cheers,

What the guy in my smoke shop taught me was to cut it at the very end. He showed me where there was this circle on the butt-end, and to cut it below that. He also said to smoke the whole thing at one go, but if you have to stop, cut off the cherry end. Not perfect, but will keep it from going as stale.
Humidors are more tricky, I'd google it. But the best way would be to find a local tobaccoist you trust, and get it through there. It's like your wine shop, the better you get in with the guru, the better the stuff they'll kick your way.

Bought a box of Montecristo #1 (brown band) at the duty free on an international flight (great deal too!) 6 years ago and never had any cigars before that. I loved the experience of sitting out on the porch, relaxing and taking the time, rather than smoking cigarettes one after the other. Much more peaceful. Haven't bought any since then. Went through the box and it was it. I contemplated getting more but didn't have any humidor. I would hate to buy some good cigars and have them getting spoiled. So where can I find good humidors at a decent price. Any good online source for those and good cigars? Also, I was never sure if I smoked them right. It might sounds silly but Is their a way to fully enjoy a cigar? Any suggestions? Cheers and Carpe Diem, Mike

| I just picked up cigars a couple of years ago when a co-worker gave me an Alec Bradley Spirit of Cuba to celebrate his new son. I still fire those up pretty frequently; good reasonably priced smoke. To really celebrate, I splurge on Monte Cristo #50s. But, most often, my scotch glass and I are accompanied by my Williamsburg clay churchwarden and Presbyterian Mixture on the porch.

NICE! I was at a Steely Dan show in Saratoga in believe 03, great show and lots of illegal smoking going on! The hippes just grew up, bought BMW's and more expensive weed!

I have smoked Macanudo Portofinos since before they were as popular as they are. I had a nice Cohiba a 2 weeks ago at Milwaukee's Summerfest. I may have been the only one smoking something legal at the Steely Dan concert.
My new favorite is the Travis Club Senator from William Finck. They are dirt cheap - $3.20 for three - and a darn nice smoke. Five inches and a 52 ring size.
I have a good friend who has a three season porch that we like to use for our jazz and cigar nights. Few things are sweeter on a nice summer night.

My paintball team has just decided we now have to bring cigars and either some Scotch or Irish whiskey to celebrate after tournaments, win or lose. Yesterday it was Helix, but we forgot the booze. We got quite a few funny looks from other teams seeing all the smoke coming out from under our sun canopy in the staging area. Seeing our guys puffing good cigars and kicking back in lawn chairs after a first place win!

Someone said Punch cigars were good and not too expensive. But, if you only smoke once in a while it's worth the price of a glass of wine to get something that's well made and smokes well, that you like. Sometimes you can get deals or suggestions at a cigar shop. Look at the prices and ask the clerk if he knows anything about the cigar. A smaller cigar will usually cost less too. Each cigar has a ring size and a length. The longer cigars are for longer smoking. THe ring size is preference that you have to experiment with. There's some good info on the cigar web sites about cigar ratings and descriptions, just like wine.

I had a garden in my backyard but a hugh pine tree fell on top of it and I never cut it up since some birds (quail or something) made a home in there. I noticed when I started up my chain saw. Anyway, the deer, moose, bear, racoons and rabbits will have their way with it. I used to plant enough for the animals and me but the rabbits really do a job.
I bought a box of Ahston Churchills from a local store (split them with a friend). Good thing rabbits and deer don't smoke. I will have one after the Preakness.
Predictions - still going with Hard Spun and Curlin. Street Sense is a great horse. I'll probably box all 3..
Enjoy!

Thank you Carwes. Those are good tips. I'll look into the Hoyo Bolivar. I had the Ashton Heritage Churchill again after the Derby and it was wonderful. I'll try and find a couple o' Honeys for my honeys - although I suspect the girls are all talk. I usually have 1 maybe 2 cigars a week during the summer and then take a break when it gets cold out. So I'm getting into prime cigar weather.
Sounds like you all have a great set up. I have a small, probably 30 cigar humidor (I call it Elinor). My little science project. I have a Diamond Crown humidification system and a Don Julio digital hygrometer. Those cost more then my humidor. The hockey puck and analog hygrometer didn't do that well, but I like my humidor.
Take care! Take to you soon.

| Hey DOUGHBOY4. I only like the Romeo y Julieta Anniversario cigars. We had a Hoyo last night and it was very good. Strong ash and consistent. We tried the Bolivar Saturday and that was surprisingly good. Pretty strong ash and, again, consistent. We have two humidors, one that only holds about 1 box of cigars, give or take two, and one that holds about 100 cigars. We want a chairside humidor because they are cheaper than what we really want. We want one that looks like a curio cabinet, you know, 6 foot tall measuring from floor to the top of the cabinet. Those are more than we are willing to spend right now. We have three Diplomat Cubans in the humi right now. We haven't tried them before but we have tried the Montecristo Cubans on a cruise ship. I really hated to see those end! They were awesome! If you have friends who are ladies and they want to try a cigar, you might want to get some Havana Honeys. A friend had one and let me try it. It really tasted like a spoonful of honey every time you put it in your mouth. I started out on flavored cigars and moved from there so those are a good choice for newbies.

I finally got a humidor after ruining a few cigars. I got a nice Spanish cedar lined humidor that holds ~20-25 cigars. I have at 68-70%. I have a travel humidor as well that is only good for a weekend.
I am still currently on the AVO XO's or the Ashton Classic Coronas.
I just got some others to try:
Oliva Serie 'O' Robusto Montecristo Platinum #1 (corona) AVO XO Intermezzo (robusto) CAO Black Bengal (toro) 601 Serie Robusto Habano
I heard the Romeo Julieta are good but haven't tried them yet.

Hi Carwes2305!
I really like the Ashton Heritage Churchill right now. It's made well, mild with a nice flavor. I think it's the African wrapper that "kicks it up a notch". I brought one over a friends house and he liked it immensely. They're a little hard to find up here in Cowhampsha, so I may have to order it.
You seem to be quite an officienado. It's great to have a lady's input. Have you ever tried the Romeo y Julieta? I have one (Court) in my humidor for any lady friends as I was told it's mild.
Well, I will have an Ashton for the Derby tomorrow! It's in my humidor at 70%. Do you guys have a humidor?
Cheers!

| Hi guys. I haven't seen many representing the women who enjoy a good stogie with the guys so here I am. My husband got me into cigars as a switch from cigarettes. Now I love Series R cigars, La Flor Dominicana Double Ligerro, Partagas black lable, Padron, Opus X, and for a light night a Fuente curly head or short story. I like others too but those are the ones I smoke the most. Oh and 898's. I love to try new things. I've had Exaliber, Playboys, Monticristo, and others that I can't remember off the top of my head. We save all of the bands so I can go back and look at any time to find out what we haven't tried in a while to try again. We have a gazebo out by the pool and love to sit outside and watch a movie on the laptop while smoking a good cigar. Any suggestions on a really good smoke to try?

I enjoy a cigar almost every night. I do not inhale when I smoke cigars, used to smoke 2-3 packs a day and for awhile had a pinch of skoal at the same time so I figure I did enough inhaling. Must work, look at my cardio and workout on my page. I smoke in my heated shop while sipping a Canadian Club and water.
I have decided to limit my cigars 3x a week or less. Try JR Cigars Co., the prices are great and his knockoffs are better than the originals.

Wow, 4 of them!! Awesome. A good reward for a job well done! I only smoked one (or part of) once in Bermuda. I remember buying it for $6 in '84, and it was a big thing. I smoked about 1/3 while I was walking on the beach and almost passed out. I couldn't finish it.
In the movie "Open Range", Kevin Costner and Robert Duval get some chocholate and 3 cuban cigars before the big shoot out at the livery. They give one of the cigars to the black smith who joins them later ...
"We ain't ourselves yet! I see they hobbled you. It's been a while since I was in a fight. I panicked. Fell back. Like to have broke my foot. Ornery old fool. Well, or that damn Cuban cigar got me riled up."

I had a dark wrappered Coheba today (black band). It was expensive ($13.95) and smoked Ok, but I will not be getting another one. The triple crown is coming up and I'm in search of brown banded Montichristo's! I also picked up a 2000 vintage Macanudo for my first fishing trip. Anyone know why the brown band is being replaced by the white band on the Monti's? I'll have to do some research.
Now that I started jogging I'll probably give up my nasty habit...but after the triple crown of course.
|
|
|
|
Rob you must have really liked those XOs or you had several of them. Haha. Just kidding..
I just had a Monticristo #1 on my deck with 2 fingers of Jack Daniels (yes, almost within my calorie range). It was 71 degrees and a slight mist in the air. Tomorrow we're expected to have a Snow Storm warning so I figured I'd get one in!
The Derby is coming up fast and I'll have to have my annual triple crown cigars aging in my humidor and a fresh bottle of Kentucky Bourbon.
Cheers

Ok, Doughboy smokes a cigar now and then, but usually in the summer when fly fishing and during the run for the triple crown starting in May. I have a humidor and found it to be quite a little science project to get it to stay around 65-75% humidity. I haven't seen any "punch cigars". I smoke what Al smoked in "the Scent of a Woman". Monte Christo #1. Also like the Macanudo's (vintage '97) but not as much. Diamond Crown Maximus is very nice as well and my current favorite.
I smoke it while sipping Jack Daniels Single Barrel or Woodford Special Reserve Bourbon (especially on the first weekend of May). I do my workout first!
I started in the army when my friend's girl friend would send him some real sweet cigars in a care package and we'd all share. Then I stopped and never smoked until a friend gave me one for my birthday and then other friends started it up again.
Another good cigar that the ladies might like is the Romeo Y Juliet. Very mild.
No cigars for me until a nice warm day. I do have a special cigar I'm saving for some good news or bad. If I don't have either then I'll smoke it out of boredom.
It was a big thing around here (NH) 5 years ago. And then slowed down a bit except in places that play pool.

Has anyone tried Punch cigars? The Punch Double Maduros are excellent if you like a strong cigar, and are a good price. I've smoked many Gran Puros, also strong, but a bit more pricey. In either case, the Punch line is, I believe the best value in full-bodied cigars. To me, they taste just as good as the Arturo Fuentes, but cost much less.
Also, cigars have zero calories. Perfect for dieting.
I live in Minnesota, so this time of year is difficult to maintain my favorite hobby. My humidor is empty. I'm hoping for a January thaw..or February.
