I guess my question wasn't that clear. Let me try again:
How many calories are burned donating a pint of blood including the blood loss and the need for the body to replace it? Not so much interested in the actual donation activity, I doubt that takes much effort. :)

I doubt that lying there squeezing a ball burns many. A body probably burns more trying to replace the blood/ blood products than burned while actually donating. It DOES make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, though . . . . Rick

| seems like if donating blood helped you to burn caloriees, or at least loose some body mass., that the blood donatinog companies would tout "hey, burns some calories and give some blood".........

Lots of good questions. Here's another; I regularly do Trima donations (once a month). they tell you not to do any heavy lifting afterwords, but what about cardio? How soon? Does it matter how many units of what they take (they take platelets, plasma, and RBC's from me, as many as 4 total units at a sitting- a couple nights ago it was a triple platelet donation - I let 'em take whatever they need the most that day). I'm also interested in the snacks/calories questions of prior posters. Rick

| That is a great question because I wonder that myself. I never understood why thay give out the sweet treats. Why not fruit and veggies. There must me a reason and I hope someone can answer this because I am curious.

I donated blood yesterday and was sitting there eating the traditional high calorie cookies, snacks, and OJ the Red Cross gives you when you're done... and I started to wonder what a body REALLY needs after giving blood... is it just calories? or the sugars (they always seem to give cookies and other sweet snacks). Clearly calorie intake needs change when giving blood, but I'm not sure how, and how to best 'manage' it.
I've given blood three or four times this year and never gained weight after eating 500+ calories of cookies and OJ after.
Anyone have any insight?
