Encourage him to eat what he *wants*--just in limited quantities. It's hard enough to control portions initially, let alone diving right into the tofu. The bottom line is balancing calories consumed and calories burned.
Later on, once he starts seeing progress, he can work on adding more nutritious foods--to the ones he probably already enjoys.
Foods I like: Anything I can add hot sauce to. Burritos, pasta, potatoes, etc.
Breakfast: 1 slice of wheat bread w/ Peanut Butter (chunky, of course!) and honey! (I've lost forty pounds eating this about 2 or 3 times each week).
Subway turkey sandwhiches. Ditch the mayo and add extra mustard.
Chicken. Lots of roasted and barbecued chicken. Yeah, take the skin off (okay, maybe one piece).

Great whole grain bread, toasted with PB,Jam or both. It's comforting and so good you don't think you're dieting. Chicken gets old, right? So,try making a great casserole with lots of chunky chicken,low-fat mushroom soup and veggies. Make enough on Sunday for two or three half-cup servings throughout the week. Ground turkey sloppey-joes are great also. Good luck!!!!

Awesome fillers:
- Veggies with dip made from light sour cream -- I mix carrots, cauliflower and broccoli - Salads with light ranch dressing - Light yogurt - Fruit smoothies, possibly with light ice cream/sherbet - Sliced apple with lowfat caramel dip
For dinner every night, I just microwave a weight watchers frozen dinner.
The vegetables taste great, and they get you a lot of vitamins you don't get most other places!
For liquids, I drink flavored water (Propel), coffee with Splenda and Pepsi One/Coke Zero.

As stupid as it sounds...
Peanut butter sandwiches. They're a little bit of a calorie hog, but those suckers keep me full for a LONG time. If anyone doesn't like a Peanut Butter sandwich, they need their butt kicked, man.

Hi Jess, good work with your weightloss and good luch with getting hubby on the program.
I need to feel that I've eaten something substantial and fruit and veggies just don't cut it for me. So, first thing I fill up on porridge (oatmeal) I started off adding honey, but gradually cut that back and now just eat the porridge unsweetened. dinner at night usually involves a baked potato or pasta of some kind.

Chicken...white meat...search for anything... 1 breast isn't bad...you need veggies or whole wheat pasta to help fill you up... one thing to remember you don't have to give up everything. It's moderation...if the package says 1 oz is 1 serving eat 1 oz... I have given up one thing and 1 thing only, Soda Pop, I used to drink 2 to 4 cans a day of pepsi...now it's water and iced tea (unsweetened when i can get it) I still eat the occasional cookie or chips...but not the whole package FYI I sarted at 234lbs back on DEC 28th 2005... my lowest was 204 then vacation and bad habits got together but the wife and i back and doing good!

I am going to have to try that. That sounds really good! I bet the kids would love that also.
What i find fills me up are the fruits and veggies that I eat. Make sure you have a lot on hand at home because it is a good easy food to pick up and eat.

Does he like Pepperoni pizza? Try making him this. It's healthy, tastes awesome, and is 230 calories.
Ingredients:
1 whole-wheat Pita bread Pizza Sauce Sliced Turkey Pepperonis Mozzarella Cheese, shredded
Directions:
Don't cut the pita bread or anything... just cover one side with sauce, sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, and add pepperonis on top.
Preheat the oven to 425 and put the pizza in for 12-14 minutes.
I eat this almost every day for lunch because it tastes like a real pepperoni pizza and it's healthy. You can substitute pepperonis for whatever you want though. ;-)
