I know I'm very excited about the upcoming fb season. I've spent many a Saturday afternoon shoulder to shoulder with about 85,000 people in Austin. (They're currently expanding the stadium to accomodate even more.)

However, Bama turned out 92,000+ for the spring game. I guess there's much excitement about Nick Saban coming to town. I understand this is SEC football but I wonder if so many fans come out because of a lack of other professional sport teams. Well, at least no other that come to mind.

75Loser, as I recall your Tiger basketball team knocked A&M out of the tourney. I was cheering for you guys.

Didn't we just watch Florida and Ohio State match up about 3 months ago? March Madness has been fun but I still look forward to college football.

The spring game was this past Saturday in Austin. Now it's officially okay to start thinking about fall ball.

The Aztecs signed 20 players. 16 in State California. Mainly retooled their Off line and Def secondary. 19 seniors and one Junior College Safety, Travis Crawford that was pretty highly recruited.

Now we get to see what Chuck Long can do.

Some New York Times article says a lot of people are calling shenanigans on Illinois's recruiting tactics this year.

There's nothing substantial just a lot of people whining, "But... but... they only had 3 wins, they shouldn't be signing top recruits."

Ron Zook has always been a good recruiter (it's on the field where they have problems). Any thoughts?

I think the worst thing is the HUGE layoff between games. I'm not saying Ohio St. would've won the game if it was played in December but it would've been a hell of a lot closer. Ohio St. went a month and a half without playing a real football game. These gigantic breaks are ridiculous and only add more merit to a playoff system.

At the very least they can give us a plus one system. It still wouldn't be 100% fair but it's at least a step in the right direction.
MIKEA525

I totally agree with the playoff system. I can't believe that everyone is calling for it, but the NCAA just turns a deaf ear.
Now, I am not an OSU apologist (though my wife is a fan), but when a team sits idle for that long anything can happen.
The playoff models that I have heard people throwing around would eliminate teams sitting idle for what 53 days... That is SO ridiculous!

Playoff, playoff, playoff.

Yeah, I know, it's not gonna happen.

Kudos to the Gators. They looked really good last night, a bunch of speed demons. I don't want to take anything away from them, but this doesn't look like the team that I remember watching at times during the season. They certainly brought their "A" game. Good for you, Gator fans. Nice little feather in the cap for Urban Meyer, too.

I can only imagine the shock that they must be feeling in Columbus. Other than the beat down Cal put on A&M, I think this was the largest margin of victory during the bowl season.

Final rankings were out today. I was a little surprised with some. Some of the upcoming pre-season projections are interesting as well.

OSU looked like they had gone back to August preseason workouts. Not taking away anything from Florida, they beat OSU's rear end pretty soundly, but they looked completely unlike they did from their November form. The BCS is still jacked up. Boise State got screwed. Just another victim

Thanks for the compliment. However, it is undeserved. Actually, I just don't want to hear all of their excuses, when the truth is that they were simply out-coached and out-played. The same thing happened to my Tigers at the Sun Bowl. How else do you explain a team blowing a two touchdown lead in the final ten minutes of the game? It's ironic that two Big 12 teams lost on a two point conversion.

BTW, I believe that you are correct in your assessment of Saban going to Bama. I believe that he would be foolish to remain in the NFL. He is a coach who is truly suited for the college game.

Coop,

You're behaving like a mature, rational adult. Go ahead and try it tomorrow, although I'm sure with all the coverage, ESPN and elsewhere, they probably can't get away from it. I'll bet that game is on instant classics by the weekend.

I could care less about Louisville and Wake.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if Saban winds up at Bama, despite his prior comments to the contrary.

Coop,

Just have to work "Statue of Liberty" into the conversation somehow. OU fan or not. They've got to love that someone pulled that out of the hat. Well, maybe they don't but that play was cool. The only thing that would have been more fun to watch would have been the center holding the snap and plowing through the line.

My favorite team fell victim to some poor decision making by their head coach in the final minutes. It was good to see a team use some imagination and take a risk and have it pay off. As a Mizzou fan, I rarely cheer for either OU or Nebraska. So it does my heart good to see either of them get their just desserts.

I am in a meeting with a lot of Sooner fans today, and they are very quiet about last night's game.

My favorite team this year in bowl play was Boise State. That game was great and I've never seen the Statue of Liberty play run in color. That was just awesome!

Let's see: Undefeated team. Beat a ranked team in a bowl game and they'll probably finish about 6th in the final rankings.

I've been watching many of the games. While it was disappointing watching my team go from playing in and winning last years National Championship to the Alamo bowl this year, a 10-3 season is still respectable, despite their crash and burn toward the season's end.

Russ, USC looked very good. I don't remember Booty looking better this season. Jarrett was extremely impressive, as well. I think they'd give Ohio State more of a game than I believe Florida will. I guess USC comes out #1 next year.

Did any of you watch the Fiesta bowl? By far, it ranks up there as one of the most exciting games, bowl or other, that I've ever seen! What a wild finish. As a Longhorn fan, it's always fun watching OU get beat up. Yeah, the Big 12 pretty much sucks, but my inner 12 year old enjoyed watching them lose. I also enjoyed seeing Cal totally embarrass A&M.

Yep, time for a playoff off system. Doubt it's ever gonna happen.

Happy New Year.

Right now I would take a four team playoff. It would at least be a start in the right direction. I agree more teams should be in the playoff system but I think we are a long way from them allowing that to happen.

With four teams you really have only one extra game and that's not too much to ask for. Have BCS #1 play BCS#4 and BCS#2 play BCS#3. Then the two winners meet and decide the national champion.

We need years like this to get people to realize just how bad we need a playoff system. Its sad but we need another couple years of controversey to make it happen I think.

Marcia,

What a mess the BCS is every year. If ever there was a year that screamed for a playoff, it would be this year. I think Florida is going to get its head handed to it January 8, but that's what the computer says should be playing.
COOP9002
12/4/06 11:49 A

All this simply goes to show how faulty the BCS system is. I realize that Michigan is a great football team. However, I have some serious reservations about a team that did not win its conference playing for a national championship. However, as we all know, a playoff format would make all of this a mute point.
THEFLASH
12/4/06 10:33 A

I think if Florida has gone up to Columbus and played Ohio St. during the regular season they would end up losing by more than 3. With that said, however, I don't think it's fair to Ohio st. to have to play Michigan again. What if Michigan were to beat Ohio St. by 3 points in the title game. Would that mean Michigan is the clear cut best team in nation?

We need a playoff system! At least a four team playoff...
SINCEREX13

I was certainly wrong, it will be good for the fans to see a 'new' game instead of a rematch... however I'm not convinced that Florida is a better team than Michigan. I will be upset if Ohio State ends up rolling over Florida that is for sure. I mena at least we all know Michigan can hang with OS.

I like Michigan...alot. Having said that, I really didn't want to see a rematch if only because they just played. On the other hand, I don't understand how they lose ground by staying idle Saturday. I think Michigan-Ohio would have been a better game, but good for Florida.

I actually think the better game will in the Rose Bowl, watching Michigan-USC.

What chaos the BCS is this year, many years.

Florida might have something to say about a Michigan - Ohio State rematch. It looks like UF took the #2 spot in the USA Today Poll. Also the AP put them at #2, which doesn't really matter for the BCS anymore. I guess we will have to see what Harris and the computers think.
SINCEREX13
12/3/06 1:22 P

Complete chaos yesterday... Although I think the USC loss will make the BCS look good again this year as you won't have a 1 vs. 3 for the championship game. As much as it stinks to have Michigan play Ohio State again, it seems to be the real only logical game especially when you are the BCS computer. Who knows though we will see.
COOP9002

The UCLA upset definitely throws the BCS into a major mess. While Nebraska may be the best team in the Big 12 North (and that's not saying much), they are probably not the second best team in the conference. I believe Ohio State just got the championship handed to them. There's not really an attractive matchup for them. I definitely don't think that Michigan deserves another shot.
MARCIATX22

Well this has been a wierd and wacky CFB season. I'm still in a funk having watched my team implode during the final games of the season. I definately became spoiled the last several few years with such great seasons. Now I'm watching Neb and OU in the Big 12 Championship game. The irony is that UT beat both teams during the season. Oh well.....

I can empathize with how USC must feel right now. I'd say Michigan is once again sitting pretty unless Florida just throttles Ark and I'd say that it's probably too late for that. That should also be an interesting outcome.

What a crazy season!

I believe you're right. It sounds like a lot of doublespeak to me. The hypocrisy of college presidents regarding athletics is rather humorous. They don't balk at all the money that those athletic programs bring into their institutions, yet they scream about academic credibility.

I do not personally believe that very many of those in that position of power really care about the average student at their university anyway.
DHANKS430
11/28/06 9:48 P

I agree that their should be a playoff. I don't buy the argument that the bowls would lose money if the BCS went away. Also, what is the deal with university presidents saying that they don't want playoffs because it would add more games and interfere with academics but then add a 12th game to the regular season. I don't buy it.
COOP9002

I agree. In fact I think that most fans do agree with you. I had the privilege of following some of the Division 2 teams in our state, and one of them NWMSU has had a lot of success in the recent past.

I believe that a playoff (at least 8 teams) would add a lot to the Division 1 season. After all, it's the only sport in the NCAA that doesn't have a playoff.

Could you imagine some games like:

Arkansas vs Ohio State or
Michigan vs Florida
USC vs Wisconsin
Louisville vs LSU

I think that would make for some awesome matchups, and would make the regular season mean something.

I'd love to see a playoff in a 8 or 16 team format. It would wreck the bowl games as we know them now but the BCS system has been broken for years. Then there will be no more argument, even if Boise State wins it all.

I enjoyed watching OSU and Michigan today. However, I absolutely do not want to see them play each other again this year. It should be interesting to see how the numbers bear out in the polls tomorrow.

Jeff, this must have been a tough and unexpected loss for your Ducks today. I was at a Wildcat game in Tucson last year. They lost that game, and many others, but it seems they are an improved program this year. (The one thing that stands out in my mind about that game was the blow up doll that was being batted around in the stands. So much for beach balls and nerf footballs. :) )

Hey Russ, my thoughts are with you.

My team plays again this Friday in Austin. I hope Colt McCoy is healthy enough to start, or at least play against the Aggies. As much as we all miss Vince, I think it is pretty clear that this is Colt's team now. He goes down and the whole team crumbled againt Kansas State. I still can't even believe it! To make matters even worse, KSU lost to Kansas today.

Interesting game between SC and Cal right now.

I'll be watching Rutgers v. Louisville, too. I realize that it is blasphemy to say if Rutgers goes undefeated that they should be considered for the Championship game because they have an easier schedule, etc. etc. But, there is something wrong with a system that eliminates a team regardless of how they play. I'd rather have a BCS system that lets the teams who are undefeated play until we have a winner. I'm sure that I am simplifying things, but there has to be a better way. Of course, I am a Rutgers graduate/fan so I am biased in this case, but I think it is time for a change even if Rutgers loses. But lets not think about that. Go R.U!

I'm going to be watching the Louisville and Rutgers game. Louisville could possibly go undefeated and not make it to the BCS championship game. Kind of reminds me of Auburn a couple years back. They looked real good against W. Virginia the other night. I'm also going to be watching when Ohio State and Michigan plays. I think Michigan can take em, at least thats what I'm hoping for.

I'm not necessarily saying that OSU and Michigan WILL be in the title game...

but I think that they SHOULD be, since, at least at this point in the season, they are head and shoulders above the rest of the bunch.

As one could tell from my previous posts, I was definately not crying when West Virginia lost last night. I, for one, was cheering for Louisville. However, that was yesterday. Come next week it'll be GO RUTGERS.

I won't be going to Austin for Oklahoma State tomorrow. As often is the case, I'll be glued to my t.v. set. I'll also be watching OU and A&M. You can't begin to imagine how it pains a Longhorn to have to root for either one of them.

Tommy, I'm not totally convinced that Michigan will be in the title game, assuming OSU wins when they next play. I don't know, lots of unexpected things happen around this time of year. It should be fun to see how it shakes out.

Ohio St. and Michigan will meet in the final Big Ten game, and should also meet again in the National Title game, with UCS losing last week, and W. Virginia losing last night

Go Blue!!

Well, I saw a list of power rankings for all 119 Division 1A and thank god SDSU is not last! I can't get the nerve up to start the chant "We're number 109! We're number 109!" yet. But, if backing a team that has only produced two bowl appearences in the past 20 years teaches you anything it's to have a sense of humor about this kind of stuff. Bad years happen and this qualifies as one. Oh well, at least I can point to being able to watch Marshall Faulk bust off some sick runs when he was on the Mesa back in the day. He was fearless.

I'll also be watching that game. I just can't believe that one of those schools might end up in the National Title game. I'm just underwhelmed by West Virginia, thus far, despite their being undefeated. Haven't seen too much of Louisville except early in the season.

I felf USC was going to have a loss sooner or later. I actually thought they were going to come back, yet again, and pull it out. What a game!

Speaking of getting by, the last two games for the Horns have been too close for comfort. They played well the second half, but no excuse for being down by 21 at the end of the first. We often have wierd outcomes against Tech. I'm glad we'll be back at home for the next game.

Hdey! I'm talking to myself here!

My Yellow Jackets spotted Miami the spread on the first play from scrimmage then got the job done to pull out a victory and beat the spread. The Florida Gators did the job in Jacksonville, handing the Bulldopgs another loss.

God is in His heaven and all is right in the world.

It appears that many of my yhellow jackets missed the bus to Clemson last week. I hop they cought the bus back so they will be ready to play the thugs from Miami this afternoon.

Playing everyone would be tough in the big ten since there are 11 teams now. I would like to see them play Ohio State to see where they really are. I dont think they could beat them but it would be interesting to see how long they could hang with them. The Badgers are a young team and you could see some good things come out of Madison in the next couple years.

I am a big Badgers fan and hope to see them on New Years Day. However I do think they are lucky this year with not playing Ohio State. I think the Big 10 should change their schedules so they play each team in the league.

Hello...new here. All I have to comment on my UCLA bruins was how conservative they got at the end of the ND game. So frustrating watching the team lose the game that they should have won!

Nice point about the Badgers! I watched them struggle with San Diego State and thought it was going to be a very long year for Wisconsin but they have really stepped it up since then. They will definitely play in a reputable bowl game but I dont think it will be on New Years Day! ---Good LUck the rest of the way!

Not sure if anyone is paying attention and I havnt read the whole message board here but how about Wisconsin. They are quitly sneaking up in the polls.

They really havnt played a tough team except Michigan but still played them tough. Their defense really stopped Purdue's offence which was number one in the Big 10.

Do I see Bucky playing on New Year's Day?

I had to do a girly luncheon for a while Saturday afternoon so I was forced to miss a couple of hours of football. ARG! I can get into some of that sometimes, but don't these women know not to plan stuff on a Saturday afternoon during college football? I know how you guys must feel when you're forced to attend a wedding or bridal shower. Ha Ha.

Laz, I also don't quite agree with the polls. I'm not sure a playoff system would be such a bad idea, but I haven't really thought it through.

JFZINGER, I didn't see that move by Bob Stoops. However, he's been mad all season so I'm not surprised.

Hey Russ, congratulations. You must be in college football heaven right now.

Did anyone watch West Virginia/UCONN Friday night? I totally don't get how they are ranked so high. Personally, I'm very underwhelmed.

What on earth has happened to FSU and Miami?

No doubt-----great weekend. Russ congrats on the first win of the Chuck Long era. As a Colorado State Ram I have to thank you for knocking off AF but I think my hopes were set too high after that sorry display against Wyoming on Saturday--ugh! Nebraska/Texas was a great game and fun to watch---congats to you Longhorns on the board----I think its a good sign for you that they could go into a hostile environment and win even when not playing at their best. On a side note I lost a lot of respect for Bob Stoops this weekend when he punched the ball in at the end of the CU/OU game---a classless move. I expected more from him.

We won one! It took half the season but SDSU put 4 quarters together and beat Air Force. It wasn't pretty but 1 point or a hundred, it's a win!

Well I guess this week we get to see how much improvement the Cornhuskers have made; should be a great game. Playing in Lincoln is the great equalizer.

Hey Marcia---dont worry about your Texans--Kubiak is one heck of a coach---and he learned from one of the best---Shanahan.
