Like the rest of you, it's a little of both for me.

The biggest impetus was looking through pictures from really cool vacations and instead of enjoying those great memories I could only focus on how horrible I thought I looked - where did that double-chin come from?! Then I'd get bitter about how that was marring the vacation memories. After one particular trip I finally decided to do something about it.

But now, I'm addicted to the high I get from being healthy and exercising. The extra energy is great. I like how a good healthy meal makes me feel. And no more mood swings b/c of the high doses of sugar I'd consume before. At this point it's just a bonus that I can finally enjoy vacation photos. :)

Benjamin,

You're right. When it comes down to it, whatever is driving this, whether it's health or sex appeal is something we have to let it keep driving.

For me, it's a mixture of both. My ex-girlfriend made a few comments about my weight from time to time last year, and I have to admit that those comments have stuck with me. Also, in March, I found out I had borderline high blood pressure--that's what really pushed me to start using this website.

I guess I think that any motivation to eat better and exercise more is all right, whether it's vanity or health concerns or 'pride in oneself' as RUIRIK said. As long as it gets you going!

Well, basically for me, though being in good shape does have other benefits. Also, sure I wouldn't mind getting an occaisional approving look from a lady.
Yeah, I look back at pictures and say what the heck happened too. I wouldn't think it's vanity (vanity is a ore negative connotation). I think it's more taking pride in oneself.(At least that's my story, and I'm sticking by it)

I train for me. Yes that's selfish, but I have to take care of myself if I'm ever going to be able to help others. That's not to say it doesn't feel good to play with my wife the way we used to when we were younger (Less weight=More energy!).

Also, deep down, I'm vain. Yeah, I'll admit it. I look at pictures of me in college and I say, "What the hell happened to me?" I posted a picture of myself back in college on my page, to remind me of where I was before. I may not get back to looking that good, but my goal is to see how close I'll get.

I'm with Jiggss73

I've never much cared what I looked like, it's just not a priority. But feeling well, doing good work, having more energy, that fires me up. We never know how many days we may have, so making the most of it is worth while. It is nice to have my wife say how hot I look, but I'm really sure she sees me with "special eyes" I see her the same way, ordinary to others but special within our selves. Besides if she likes what she sees, that is plenty good enough for me. At first I was glad not to have to buy new clothes because I was too heavy, but now I'm gonna have to buy new ones because they are too big. I hate spending money to replace clothes that aren't
worn out

At first I just wanted to look better and be able to do more stuff without embarrasment, but then I started realising how good I felt from healthy food and exersize - and I want to feel like that all the time - so I will carry on.

To be honest I think it's a mixture of both, mostly for myself and how I want to look but also a bit for my partner 2.

I train hard for myself, of course it feels good to hear "Wow you look great" from time to time-- but that's just for motivation. Not for purpose.

My background of being heavy and unhealty keeps me going more than anything though.

Hey Surfer

I think you are still younger than all of the Beach Boys!

I am 57 and doing it for the health reasons. Recently diagnosed with high bloode pressure and sleep apnia. Both of these are assisted by being over weight. I never worried about it in my life before so it is time for some discipline. I guess it would be nice to hang around long enough to see any garnd kids my 16 year old son or my 22 year old daughte might incubate.

Good luck

Bill

Just curious what the main motivation is behind the weight loss efforts...are you mainly concerned with the health benefits or is your appearance more important? As for me, as much as I acknowledge with my head the health benefits; it is probably my vanity that drives me on in my quest to lose the weight. For sure as I've gotten older, the pendulum has swung more towards the healthy side of the equation, but still...doesn't hurt to have my wife appreciate the results and that is more motivating than knowing my cholesterol dropped 5 points...
