| Well here we go into week 1 of the Merriman suspension. I believe him when he says he wasn't cheating but I wish this hadn't happened. Our linebacker corps has been crushed this year with Phillips hurt, Foley being shot by that idiot off duty cop and now this. Well, we'll see how good the rest of the defense is.

I played with getting him earlier in the year but decided to ride it out with Bledsoe on my squad a little longer. After seeing Bledsoe's bad play the past few weeks though, I figured that Romo would be a good vulture pick this year.
And you're right. T.O. needed a good chewing out! You can't call for the ball as much as he does and leave it on the carpet! If Romo's smart, he'll rely more on Glenn.

Looks like SD will have Merriman at least for the next two weeks. That's not so good news for me as I have Bulger starting this week! And then you have that offensive powerhouse that is the Cleveland Browns...
When TO dropped that 4th down pass, I was just waiting for Parcells to blow up at him. Shame that didn't happen... I noticed you picked up Romo off waivers - it'll be interesting to see how much he improves after getting first team reps. Or if the Dallas coaching staff has finally figured out that you really shouldn't throw quick-outs when at the goal line!

You almost have to start Romo next week. You can't pull Bledsoe out at half time and then put the ball back in his hands the next Sunday. And what's up with T.O. dropping passes in wide open space. Romo only hit him in the hands on that 4th down. Bledsoe has been a statue all season and that limits him. Heck, when I play in Madden, I built a mobile QB and put him on Dallas' squad. That team cranks. Does that translate to real life? We'll see
And yes Merriman is appealing. He says it was a supplement mixup, so we'll see if what happens this week. It is refreshing to have him man up and take responsibility for what happened and apologize for being a distraction. Still, while we won't be drinking just yet, I'll see if someone is going down to Tecate and have them pick up a case of beer at the brewery, you know. Just in case.
Aaron, thank you for losing this week. I might put in another mile this week anyway, but it's good to know I really don't have to. Have a good run up there in Vegas!

Well, Merriman's going to appeal his suspension... So Russ, maybe the heavy drinking should start at least after the Rams game! Personally, I think drug use is rife in the NFL - players have to get bigger, stronger and faster and do it in a hurry! The Haynesworth stamping screamed roid rage to me... What is worrying is that steroid use is going to filter down through college and into high school football - that's not a good idea.
On a lighter note, it was nice to see the Giants manhandle the Cowboys last night. Here's hoping the lad Romo gets the starting nod for next week rather than Bledsoe the statue!

As far as Merriman it really bothers me that it seems to be not nearly a big a deal as it would be if another big name got caught in the MLB. It seems that b/c football is now the favored sport they don't catch the same amount of critisism from the press as does the MLB.
As for the Giants game, sweet victory again. Second week in a row the Giants won me a side bet with my roomate. I even game him the game this week as a pick instead of +3.5 for me. What a Dallas Cowboy loving sucker :)
Poor Bledsoe, benched for a guy who wasn't even drafted and is probably going to get chewed up and spit out by the league, Romo is no Tom Terrific.

I cracked up at the official line out of SD regarding Merriman. That's gotta hurt, especially when you have games against St. Louis, and then at Cincy and Denver. I'm glad that Cincy's offense is finally showing a bit of life, but I don't think you guys are! I don't count the Browns as being a tricky team just yet, after the Denver game. It just felt to me that the Broncos did just enough to win, although that could just have been the post-climbing beers kicking in...
My Uncle emailed me this afternoon to crow about the Raiders win vs. Arizona. I told him exactly what you just said - besides, Bay Area bragging rights have been settled for another season!
|
|
|
|
You know, we probably did. But facing Arizona can make anyone look like a champion. It almost shouldn't count as a win.
And just in case you were wondering, the official take from San Diego on Merriman's suspension is "Nooooo!" followed by a lot of heavy drinking. This will be a rough 4 weeks.

Looking forward to tonight, I need to get some points from my Giants players to maintain my unbeaten record in the Sparkpeople Fantasy football league. How can you not like the Pats at -6, the Chargers at -6, the Eagles at -6, Denver -5 or the Panthers at +3.5... However all are road teams and I'll bet we see a couple of upsets (Though technically, a Panthers non cover would not be an upset)

Hey, if you're going down with the ship like Green more than likely is, wouldn't you at least rather be at the helm? That type of collapse means someone head and if he can place it on his offensive coordinator, then so be it. Now, if they have another collapse like that, then he should probably get his desk cleared out and maybe pick up a change of address cards soon.
And Leinert is the real deal. How he slipped to 10, I have no clue. Don't you think the Raiders are kicking themselves now for passing on him at 7?

Well done on the extra mile Russ! I think I'm going to be up for that in the next couple of weeks - most of my team are on bye weeks either this week or next... I was watching the highlights of the Bears-Cards game last night and thinking about our discussion about O-lines. Like the Raiders, the Cards O-line is pretty bad - I mean, how do you NOT even get a hand on the pass rusher on the QBs blindside?
Leinart looks like the real deal though. Better O-Line play will help him and Edge - I noticed that Denny Green fired his O-coordinator, a desperation move?

I was thinking about turning off the TV at the end of the 3rd quarter, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Like you, I do pity the Cards fans - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory seems to be their "modus operandi" this season. Apparently Denny Green's press conference was a corker too. If you have NFL network, you can catch the replay on Thursday night.
More to the point, are you set for your extra mile after the Fantasy loss?

Totally agree with your sentiments Russ. I bet Shell is hating his O-line now, especially when he knows how a good O-line should work. Madden was talking about his work with the Baltimore line during the game yesterday - I didn't realise the much-talked about silent counts were his doing! It amazes me how neglected O-linemen are - surely one would realise that without a decent line, the QBs going to spend much more time on his arse, the backs are going to go nowhere fast and the recievers are just going to be a bunch of pretty-boys who run up and down the field all day long... Or maybe I'm just bitter as I'm a former fullback!
I don't know if the Raiders have their 1st round pick but they have too many needs right now to be addressed in one draft. Aaron Brooks as starting QB anyone?
|
|
|
|
| How could you not have that dismayed look on your face, if you're Art Shell? I mean, these plays have to look better in practice. But, for a hall of fame O lineman to have a team where the O line is suspect, it's got to hurt. He probably has an ulcer that I could put my fist through right now. During the off season, they should just fire sale all the linemen, stockpile draft picks from that number one. For God sake, let the Heisman trophy winner play somewhere else they'll get (Do they have their number 1 or was it traded) and just start over. Let's hope the Texans get their stuff together before December.

Russ, I'm right with you there on an 0-16 season for the Raiders. I have an Uncle who is a big Raiders fan and we have a friendly Raiders-49ers rivalry going on which makes their consistent losing a lot sweeter. Looking at their schedule, I can't really see them winning any games, apart from the one against the Texans in December.
I've missed Art Shell, a great player, yes but not too hot as a coach. I love his "I have no idea what I'm supposed to do" Face, and his supreme clock-management skills when the game's on the line in the 4th quarter...

I have been trying to tell my buddies all season that Balitmore's D is the only reason the team is good. Too much credit has been given to McNair for the teams wins. Their offense is just anemic, McNair has 5 td's to 6 picks(granted 3 came against Denver), and Jamal has only 1 rushing TD. They are no different than the good Baltimore teams of the past... if they win it will be on Defense.
Fortunatly, my buddies came around last week on the Denver game... so no betting on Baltimore until they show they can score on offense more consistantly.
Oh yeh, love love love the Bengals this week, and their are a lot of other good games as well.

Much as I never followed Denver, they were executing out there tonite. And Ray Lewis, whatever they pay him, is not enuf. Teased the Colts spread down to -2 (along with Dallas) which turned out to be a life saver. That was the most anxious we've been watching a game this season. We had the Pats as well and that was much easier to watch... but we hit another nail biter and covered the St. Louis game with an unbelievable 2pt conversion in the closing seconds. We went hard on the Bears and basically just coasted through that game. Tonight I think we are going light on the Eagles. They should cruise but 11.5 is a large large spread.

JAX played football. Block, tackle, special teams. They did it ! However, that said, Roethlisberger (sic), could not open it up for the run, because he could not pass well at all. Batch should have played, and Parker just was wasted, as they could key on them. Again, JAX secondary did the job.

Well, I wont do any spread bets till I got a better feel. O, not to be on the Oakland O-line !! Hard to figure how to have a football game without an offensive line, and I guess Coach Shell felt they were pretty wretched, rather than offensive. Long hard practice, not to mention everything else..
Green Bay's guys had some excuses with so many new guys, but again, you must have an offensive line to play football......

I didn't do too well picking games against the spread this week. Like you said, it's hard to judge teams until a few weeks have passed. After all, the first year the Patriots won the Super Bowl, didn't they lose to the Bills 31-0 in week 1?
However, the Raiders looked so bad that I just have a feeling they'll be awful all year long. The Packers are a bit more difficult to predict because Favre is so hot/cold. More cold than hot now, but I think he'll still have good games every now and then, so the Packers will be tougher to predict.

Went to the Pats home opener on Sunday with about 9 other guys. What a blast... B52 bomber flew overhead before the game. Even though the Pats didn't play all that well it was an exciting game. Of course had they kicked that field goal in the end instead of going for it on 4th down I would have won a hundred bucks, but I won the money back later on the Colts game.
It will be interesting to see how the season shapes up... you really don't get a good idea of what the teams are made of until week 4.

| The last place I'd want to be this week is the Oakland O-line practice! Did anyone see Art Shell with his notepad in between plays. Everytime they showed him after a sack or a tackle behind the line, he was writing in that notepad. They embarrassed a hall of fame lineman. There will be hell to pay and I'm sure Shell is going to collect the first installment starting tomorrow.
|
|
|
|
True, but when you have a defense that plays like they did last night and LT, I'm thinking that a lot of games will ask Philip to not screw up more than make a lot of plays.
However, not all the games will be against Oakland (who could be the worst team in the league). I think he'll be able to perform as well as Drew Brees has for the past couple of years.
|
|
|
|
They went out of their way to make sure he didn't need to win the game. LT was on last night and the defense pretty much stomped Brooks into a little puddle. Somewhere along the line though, Rivers will need to actually win the game for them. We'll see what he can do then.
None of my QBs showed up in my SP league. Rivers had a quiet night, Bledsoe was non existant until the end leaving McNair as the only one who had some game for week one. But it is week one so, I won't panic.
|
|
|
|
Nice win! It's always surprising when a defense helps you out so much. I had Baltimore's defense, and I think San Diego's was the only one better, at least in my league. However, I still lost that game due to Carson Palmer's poor game.
Who would have thought I should have started Byron Leftwich vs. Dallas rather than Carson Palmer vs. KC?
Oh, and I was pleased to see Philip Rivers do well last night. Granted, he didn't have to do much, but I thought he made the passes he needed to make.
|
|
|
|
| Well, I dodged a huge bullet thanks to the Raiders having no offensive line to speak of. 9 sacks? The Charger defense is good but that was just obscene. I ran the mile anyway, figuring that there was no way on God's green earth, I was going to catch anyone with just my defense left
|
|

| THe Eagles looked good, but it wasthe Texans defense they were playing against. However, any road win is a good one. I think the addition of Stallworth will certainly help them. He always wanted to be a #1 guy in New Orleans, but Horn had that spot.

| I would like 2 agree the Eagles seemed to start off good.

| McNabb didn't have a bad game. He was actually pretty crisp. Must be all the chunky soup his mom is pushing errr feeding the team...

| Dallas looked good @ the beginning then it went do hill, What about the brothers eli & peyton pretty good game. Nobody really impressed me this week but it is week one.

| He was too late throwing it in. Didn't matter much. Either way, with no kicker and for at least a half no QB (Bledsoe stunk it up out there) Dallas was toast.

Well I really didnt trust Del Rio, but JAX looked good, and I think Fred Taylor and the secondary gave them what they needed. What was with Parcells and the screwed up challenge flag??
Good Luck to all

They don't want to rush Young along. You can throw a running back in early and expect him to produce. A QB just gets his clock cleaned.
Well, I'm 16 pts down. Barring the Chargers beating the snot out of Brooks tonight, I guess I just bought an extra mile tonight. (Me and my big mouth) I guess I'm here to get healthy so I can't complain. Well I could but who'd care?

| Tennessee needs Young and the HELM. Is is Fisher thinking.

| For those of you that are playing fantasy football in the NFL league, how about a standing challenge: Every week, the losing team owners run, walk, bike, use the elliptical or swim one extra mile. Hey there's no money on the line so you've got to have some kind of pressure. And yes, I'm throwing this down, with my team down 14 already. So, how about it owners? Are you with this?

| When your team is in the basement. ANY improvement is enough to hang your hat on. And I'd take an injured Culpepper over the carousel of scrubs Miami put in the pocket the last 3-4 years. He's going to need to make his reads and work that foot more. Ultimately, he's got to win, if he wants to be considered better than those who came before.

| Not as worried about Roll-Tide as I am with Gators. But should be good season for the VOLS

I would think that has something to do with it, but he was making bad throws in the first half too. He often threw the ball at his receivers' feet.
I certainly wasn't complimenting him in my earlier post. I don't think he's a very good quarterback, but had Randy Moss to distract defenses before last season. He showed that loss hurt him last year even before he hurt his knee. I think the "experts" forgot this whenever they were predicting Miami's great improvement for this season.

| The problem with Culpepper is he can't push off of his rtight foot as well. Whether or not he builds thr strength up in that back foot will tell the tale this year. The 1st half he was able to zip the ball into the receivers but you could tell he was getting tired. Both of those picks the ball just sailed and that's because of not being able to push off and power the ball with his right foot. If I was a DB, I would dare him to throw those out patterns because if his right foot won't let him zip the ball in, he's going to be throwing a lot of picks.
