I'm an IT manager for a manufacturing company in Indiana. My team and I are responsible for all IT related aspect in the company. From servers to printers, network to telecomm, even building security to cell phones. It makes it difficult to focus on projects and tasks with so many people relying on you for such a variety of things (we are beginning to get requests for building maintenance items) but I'm happy knowing I won't be doing the same thing day in and day out.

I was also glad this thread as well as this forum. I read a post earlier where someone stated that they began to wonder how many men were actually on this site, I was beginning to wonder the same thing. It will be nice now to discuss weight loss issues from a guys perspective.

I'm an intranet developer and DBA mainly building knowledge management applications, maintaining a custom reporting system, and taking care of a medium sized Mysql installation. Mainly just program in C# these days but have done projects in Perl, PHP, Coldfusion, and vbscript (ASP).

I gained a ton of weight after I quit smoking a few years back. Traded one addiction for another. Sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day doesn't help much either but I love what I do.

Great to meet you all!

Not in IT as of yet but as a 46 y.o. Ironworker I'm steadily working towards that goal. I've a plan of finishing my AAS in Computer Networking with a focus on Network Security in about 5 years and at that time I may or may not pursue a career in IT. If I don't at that time I will definitely do so at age 52 (earliest that I can retire from the ironworkers with reduced benefits). After I retire, I am hoping that I will be working for some type of company as their IT person and be making enough in that capacity and with my pension to make ends meet and then some. This is my goal at least aside from losing weight (which is why I am here at Spark People). I'm currently going to school and in my second semester of Cisco classes so if I may, I may call upon some of you Cisco wizards with a few questions. Anyway, that's the short version of my IT stuff, been messing with computers since the ol' TI 99a days and done the gamut of 2400 baud to running my own bbs and game servers. Enough of that though....

I am a Road Warrior break-fix, jack-of-all-trades field engineer/technician. My more recent accomplishments included being certified to service every model of Phaser printer supported by Xerox, but I have never considered myself a "printer guy". Hated working on them for years. I've got A+ cert in 1997 and grew from there.

Until recently I was also a certified legal videographer, videotaping depositions and such for lawyers.

Happy to be in such great company here! IT pounds are hard to work off, and when they are combined with Road Warrior fast-food pounds as mine are I need all the support I can get. lol

My title at the University I work for is IT Analyst. In reality, I manage a group of student developers doing machine setups (imaging, repair, etc), application development (mostly web based), database development, lotus notes development, and web design.

On the side I do networking, security analysis, server setups, web development, and general technology consulting.

Although I do sit behind a desk most of the day, I work on a campus and attend class there as well so I walk quite a bit. It is about a 10 minute walk to each class from work. I also try to run around the lakes here (4-5 miles depending on route) and ride a stationary bike. My fiancè forced me to buy the thing for her birthday, and I finally got angry enough that it wasn't being used and started riding it.

I have a boxer that doesn't really have a yard to run around in so I like to take her running with me. She loves it and it wears her out so she isn't so rambunctious at home.

I used to frequent the vending machines for Cokes then I moved to Diet drinks. Now I'm trying to move to water; however, with 21 hours of class, side work and a full time job, I need the caffeine!

Hello. I'm new here. For 8 years, I did tech support in a cubicle for Micro Warehouse & CDW which helped me put on about 50 lbs over that time. For the last 1.5 years, I now do desktop support and manage a few Mac/Win/Linux servers for a University. It's still mostly a desk job but not nearly as much as before and I frequently have to walk across campus for meetings. I also quit smoking 20 days ago after being hospitalized for a lack of oxygen.

I'm glad to see there's a guys forum here and some other IT folks. We're frequently the ones who "don't get out much".

Welcome Steve! And for me, it's good to be home.

The conference was really good, had some fun after hours, got a new tattoo, rode the roller coaster at New York, New York, watched the water shows at Bellagio [I *LOVE* that place at night!] and came home with more ideas than I know what to do with.

For reference, this conference is application based versus hardware based. No hardware vendors excpet for HP, but they are there to have input on the OS and application support end. So if you're in to server administration like I am, this is a great time!

Hi All

I just joined a few weeks ago. I work for a major ISP in Canada. Do VoIP testing for customers who are going to implement VoIP on their LAN's and between sites on their WAN's. Like alot of you one of the reasons I am on this site is I spend alot of time on my A$$ behind a computer terminal, although with this job I do get out in the field more. I deal with alot of Cisco and Nortel products but also see some other solutions that are usually provided by the customer.

Yeah I'm not sure how my new employer handles conventions, but I know I've been handed over a bunch of Tech-Ed 07 things from some co-workers that went this year. Hopefully next year I'll get to go to a conference. I'd much rather go to Windows Connections than Tech-Ed.

I love E2K7 I have deployed it a couple of times and used and supported it for a while. Now at my curet job w are on 2K3 and awaiting approval for the 600K dollars to migrate to 2007... so it'll be a while. After using OWA in 2007 for 8 months or so, I can't bring myself to do it on 2K3 anymore.

I was just getting used to the Command-line management tools too... I'll have to learn them all over again when we finally do upgrade.

Ah yes.....E2K7. It was once stated by a wise older mage [okay, curmudgeon] in the days of E2K that Exchange is a cruel master....and how true that statement is, even today.

I deployed E2K7 in to production 2 months ago and I can tell you it wasn't a walk in the park. Unless the walk had all sorts of wild critters biting you every step of the way. For once, my college is on the bleeding edge and so far, the changes made have been really good. Didn't take our (L)user base very long to get the hang of the new OWA and the clinet side stayed the same so there was no culture shock involved....whew!

On a side note, is anyone going to Vegas for the WinConnections convention the week of 5NOV07 besides me? Yes, true....it's VEGAS BABY, but there is SOOOOOO much information being passed around you can't walk away without new ideas, strategies and plans unless you slept through the 4 days.

Another nerd here... I was doing consulting and systems integration for SMB's in the Tulsa area and then about 2 months ago I got a job as an Exchange Administrator for a large company here.

The consultant Job put another 20lbs or more on me in a little over a year. Way too stressful and constantly remoted into a different company's servers, even at home. Now I have one of those "15 min of real work each day" jobs and can focus more on my family and myself.

Russ, I just finished up my MCSE 2003 track in June. Starting in January they are switching to a new set of certs. MCSE will still be legitimate, but you can't get it after this year. The new designation will be MCITP (MS Certified IT Professional) and then there will be different tracks. They all take a different number of tests to complete and I haven't seen any of the tests that over-lap. For example the Enterprise Messaging track is 3 tests in Configuring, Planning Enterprise Deployments, and Implementing Enterprise deployments of Exchange 2007. I took the Configuring test this summer.

Right on, Russ. No sense in testing now and then going through the "grandfathering" goatscrew and then having to test again after it's all smoothed out.

I'd be more inclined to persue that path if there was any motivation for me with this college - but there isn't. It would be a personal thing only.

Being a team leader in a small IT shop [total of 15 people to support 2000 users] in a community college, getting more people on the little budget we have is pretty much out of the question. Heck, we can't even get a decent raise for what we already do so hiring new help is a bad joke. We do considerably more this year than we did last year with one less person than we had and now we have to live the "work smarter not harder" mantra.

Yeah, IT is a rough job on the body. Who'd of thought that picking a career based on something you are good at would be so harmful?

My frustration is that if I'm not at my desk, I'm not working. I don't want a Blackberry or anything but the perception needs to change. The people in the office who are fit are the ones who work 80-hour work weeks but take plenty of time at lunch to bike, run etc. Me, I'm just a software engineer trying to keep up without sacrificing my family and health.

I have started walking during the day. We have a great walking trail out back that is very nice.

Guys I am worse than an IT Professional. I am Sales for IT. So I am sitting at a desk all day then paying for ritzy dinners and drinks with clients all night. I work for Teradata, anyone out there familiar with our stuff since i see some DB2/Oracle folks on here.

If anyone is looking for a move we always are lookinng for good folks for both PS (app development / DB Design) and customer support. shoot me a message if you are curious. we are growing big time and about to be spun of from our parent company and will IPO in Q3. the largest system my team supports is about 100 Terabytes and runs a mixed workload with both OLTP and data mining/analytical concurrent job flows. not our largest system but still pretty cool.

Tech Ed Specialist here for a law firm. Started out as a paralegal for 14 years, and made the transition over to the technology side of the firm last year. We're a national firm, so I travel to our other offices as well. I mainly write user documentation and assist with training - legal apps are more my specialty. We also have a tech coaching program where we work as personal trainers in technology for our attorneys (and they can use all they can get), and provide some practice management support for attorneys using technology at trial, etc. I'm not into the hardcore techno side, but work more as a bridge between the legal staff and the IT staff. I live in Austin - the market is still pretty solid here. IPT is really growing fast and a lot of the CCIE's are heading that route as well. Most of the MSP's are taking guys with strong WAN/LAN switching backgrounds and letting them work those issues while learning the IPT ins-and-outs. Not sure about Florida - but I would imagine like most of the South - it's growing, but so are populations. Catch 22.

Hey all-

I'm an application developer (.NET 2.0, SQL Server) for a financial company in Iowa. I'm fortunate that my company has such a strong health and wellness ethic for its employees. That's actually how I first heard about SparkPeople.

It's really important to me to get out during lunch and walk - I typically get a mile in. I work in a taller building downtown, so I sometimes get in the stairwell and climb floors for some quick and easy cardio throughout the day. Also, I used to get off a few floors before my own floor and then walk the rest of the way. (I'm on the 28th floor, so I do rely on the elevator a little...) : )

Any other Cisco engineers out there? What's the job market like in Florida or down south?

I've read some polls and articles related to the thin vs. fat -issue, and one of the things is that people seem to think that fat = lazy.

While that is not based on any science, it still affects people to some extent.

Now, the second thing is that lean people do have better self esteem and consequently dare to aim higher.

You know Rob, the hours on and the commute happen to all of us. Throw in trying to eat healthy and it's a tough gig, that's for sure. I found that I'm rebelling against what we normally eat by mixing in fruit into the snacks. I keep a bunch of bananas in my desk now. It's better for me and cheaper than what I'll grab out of the vending machine. I guess that makes me kind of weird, in this field but I think it's paying dividendes because the better I eat, the more energy I've found I have.

I am a network engineer. I work with Cisco gear and everything that goes with it. Since starting to work in the IT field I have gained allot of weight. With the long hours and long commute I have no time for exercise and also the long on the go hours dont offer time for good meals.

Interesting question, weight vs. job status. It's been proven that better looking (ie more fit looking) people earn more money. My brother is dealing with this right now and I feel bad for him.

The fact is, there are many people with skills out there. When a prospective client is deciding who to use they have to narrow it down. Obviously most people start with actual skills. But once skills have been narrowed down the last thing to narrow two people down by are appearance. It's a sad comment on our society, but it's reality. Most of us here on SP have dealt with it at some point or another.

Hopefully we can all learn a thing or two from it and remember that when we're the one's hiring,.

You know Drexle, it couldn't have hurt. I know at my weight I had only a few solid clients but they knew my skillset and I'd taken care of them pretty well. I don't get why thin equates to capable. I've met some thin people in this industry I wouldn't let touch my networks but wouldn't you know, they can find clients left and right.

I'm a hobbyist with Flash and Dreamweaver so I might have to talk to you about some things.

I'm all IT professionalesque. Web/Flash design is what I make my money on, and my degree is in Animation. I'm a hand-coder and know how to use actionscript when it comes to developing Flash movies, games, and interfaces. I'm handy with photoshop, too.

Do any of you freelance? I'm full-time nowadays, but I wonder if being thinner would have helped me in my not-so-distant freelance days? I'm almost at my goal weight, and I wonder if clients have more confidence in a thin professional than one who is decidedly not. The poll question today made me wonder how much effect an IT professional's weight has on how people percieve his abilities. I would almost imagine that a heavier professional might be taken more seriously given the implication that they do nothing but sit around and code all day, but you never know...

Way to go Melon! 5.5 down is always good. I really need a personal trainer. I need a push from time to time to get out there and get my workouts in.

Hey guys. I work on Windows Server 2003 systems for the US Air Force, with my primary focus being Systems Management Server 2003. I gained most of my weight in the first few years I had this job. I worked night shifts, so my diet and sleep cycles were out of whack, and before you knew it I was 60 pounds heavier than I used to be. I found it hard to exercise because I was so tired all the time. Now that I am working a more normal job, and failed a PT test, I am ready to get rid of this weight.

One last note...I quit smoking for good about 1.5 years ago. If I can quit smoking, I can surely get in shape...but that is just my thinking.

I am about a month old on this site and I just weighed myself. I am down 5.5lbs, I couldn't be happier for myself. This is just from changing my eating habits. I start a workour routine next month with my personal trainer. I can't wait for that to happen. I am also in IT. I currently an a Systems Analyst.
