My fishing and camping trip was nice but the catching was not all that good, we only catched 2 small catfish, seems like everyone at the campground was having a difficult time getting fish, there was a little bit of a cold front last week and that may have done it.

Hey there from catfish1 the weather around the Houston area is awsome to do some fishing finally I have been several times both salt and fresh water fishing I have taken a meal or two but nothing to boast about. Any body else have any luck. Happy fishing and camping from catfish1

IT should be about time for the anglers to start getting in the mood for fishing ! I've gotten back into the groove on restoring my squarestern oldtown canoe. i replaced the gunnels and have the inside 65%
scraped down. Then comes the varnishing and then fiberglassing the outside. I don't plan to get in a hurry, because thats when you screw up . Hope all survived the winter!

| Blackberry, Have fished for muskies several times here in Wisconsin. They are fun to catch/pursue. It seems that most the time you can get them to follow it is getting the to bite that can be a challenge.

WOW BlackBerry nice craft. I have had several sq.bk canoes, none cedar strip, Funny Mum just got her Outdoors card, expires 12/31, took a while to process. Went pike fishing while bear hunting in N.Ontario several years ago, out of BIG sq. stern, about 20 ft.
Yours will be nice when done, and you have some work ahead of you over the winter. Never caught muskies altho I lived in the Upper Susquehanna Drainage(PA) for awhile. Always wanted to try a nice floating plug with muskrat belly skin on the underneath.... I know they like little furry things, lol. Want to be travelling your way to the Stan Roger Festival in Canso NS, but dont know if we will get there this year.
Good luck on your restoration, as I am sure it will be a beauty and a labor of love........

I am also in Wisconsin. I live about 30 minutes east of St Paul, Mn or 1 hour west of Eau Claire. Still no snow here but cold. I should be able to go ice fishing in about 1 week at this rate. Should be making about 1/2" of ice per day.

I'm in southeastern Wisconsin, about 40 miles north of Milwaukee.
Like BRESINAJ said, though, open water will only be open for a bit longer. Once the lake gets hard it's time to get out the ice fishing gear for most folks around here. Personally, I don't fish in the winter. I've got enough ice in my freezer (LOL !!). Ice fishing - BRRRRRRrrrrr !!
I'll just wait patiently for spring and hungry largemouths. Maybe I can put the time to good use by EXERCISING !!!

Funny, I had an OAK rowboat as a kid, I have that to thank for the hellish grip and deltoids. Funnier even that I do rowing excercises sitting on the excercise ball. Now all I have to do is include some casting excercises and tune into SPORT Fishing on the OUTDOOR channel and I can live in complete denial, LOL.
Yea, I walked about the same and got lots less game than when I got my first birddog, we would cover some ground. I always had either Brittanies, or German Wirehairs or Shorthairs, and all of them covered LOTS of ground. I would be weary when those days were done.
Well, rowing and fishing and Johnny Walker Black, probably the BLACK in moderation, but the rest as much as you can get, will do ya good.

Walking behind a bird dog WOULD be great exercise. The lake I'm on is very small and mud bottomed, so there's no motors allowed. This means I get lots of ROWING exercise (between the bottle bass). So, it's not a total loss . . . LOL.

I like fishin' for largemouth bass. To give 'em a sporting chance (after YEARS of slayin'em), I now only use lures and ultra-light tackle. My favorite is 8" rubber worms on keeper hooks. 4lb test line, and an ultra light rod. No sinkers or anything necessary. I also like Hula Poppers at dawn and dusk.
Remember, a bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work.

Winning is good. Some synthetic materials are good for shimmer and flash. It often depends on the pattern your tying and whether it is to imitate minnows or bugs. The synthetics will work well for minnows. Also tiny lead head jigs and such can use synthetic fibers to imitate the hairs and such, also stuff like wool yarn which is NOT sythetic can be used also. Any excuse to get out fishing is good, and you really cant pick whether the BIG ones are gonna hit his lures or yours, so just go do, & have fun.

That sounds like a great time to spend together, but I know he probably likes to go with just the guys, too. I'll have to remember to let him catch the big ones, too..LOL. I have a tendancy to want to WIN at other sports and then he doesn't want to go with me any more (i.e. bowling). LOL. He just doesn't realize how much I bowled before I met him.
Thank you for the information on the material, too. Maybe I can learn to tie the flies and he can use them.

| Hi get, glad to here a wife wants to take up fly fishing. I get my wife out there a couple times a year, but she just uses the spinning gear. It is a lot of fun just be sure to let your husband catch the big ones LOL. As far as tying, I am sort of new at it myself. There are some syn. materials out there, but you will want to use natural material. Anyway keep in touch. Got to run for now.

| Hello...hope you don't mind me dropping by..I'm considering learning how to fly fish just so I can go with my husband who is also just learning. A friend of ours owns a shop locally and it looks like fun...mostly the fly tying part for me..But do I have to use real animal fur/feathers, etc? Do synthetic materials work?

P.S. Take your wife to Alaska too. Whether she fishes or not, there is tons of stuff for her to do, and if she is the least bit adventurous, you will have such a great time you will never forget it. Even you might decide to move there!! That'd be my advice, LOL..

I lived in Fairbanks for 17 yrs. Currently out on TDY with wife, in Ottawa, Canada. My personal recommendation is that you figure out how to take the trip, and go to Alaska. Nothing I have seen is as good. DONT do it tourist, but rather, do it like a local, or at least someone who either has researched it or has had a friend there.
Not all the fishing is great at any given time. HOWEVER, if you read up, like contact Alaska Fish & Game [ all the biologists WILL talk to you, love to talk to you], you can find out a lot. Plan a segmented trip, perhaps goldpanning on your way from Tok to Chicken on the Taylor Hiway, or say down in the Palmer area, or in the Kenai. Lots of places arent the real glass and steel tourist traps, but like in Gilley's in Cooper Landing, Kenai, are good places run by mom 'n pop folks. If you want REAL Northrn fishing, find the best months from AK Fish & Game, and drive to Indian Village of MINTO, 120 miles out the Elliot Hiway, stay in their village lodge, and hire an Indian guide for a day [probably one of my old buddies from my drinking days in Fairbanks]. You will catch lots of pike. Maybe even salmon depending on seasonal overlap.
My point is, if you have basic info on where to go to do what, you can have a GREAT time on reasonable bux. Alaska is too big to do it in even a couple trips, [thats why I moved there], but you might have a great time, with some good info. Chat with me here now and again, so we can talk more. Its a good thing to have a place not too far from home!! The East Coast was a great place for me as before I went to Alaska, i.e., blues, fluke, flounder, kingfish, tautog, stripers, weakfish etc.
Of course, like everything else they had their seasons and their places. In Alaska, its been grayling, more or less year round, and salmon in their seasons. In the Interior, there are only a few oppurtunities for wild trout. Lots more chance for Northerns and such.

| Good day, I forgot that this was not a CT page and people from all over read this. The Hammonasset is a small stream that runs from a reservoir about 15 miles to the sound in Madison. My favorite area is up on the Housitonic but that’s about a 90 min. drive. The Hams great because its 15 min from the driveway, to in the stream. Hi T. - Thought I was all alone on these fishing boards. Far as I can see, good excercise hiking in and out, not to mention the metabolism boost of standing in cold water.
How big is the Hamxxxxx? I have to assume you were fly fishing. What patterns did you throw at them before you changed their minds? I was from PA where we had a number of limestone streams in the central part of the state where I went to college. I am not familiar with CT, so I am not sure if you have any limestone streams there.... Tight lines to ya,

I think hunting or hiking in for fishing would be more challenging than simply fishing. Stalking is so adrenalizing. I saw 7 turkeys grazing in a field after church today, and I could just feel the adrenaline tingling its way up my back, wow !!

| I've done some fishing earlier this season. No time to get back out. In central Oregon here there are lakes everywhere and I've only been to like 4. Plenty of rainbows,kokanee,browns and saw one catfish. All on little Rapallas. number 5's I think.The rainbow colored ones

Also ya cant wait too long for Northern Pike, as they stop eating as the season turns into autumn, going into a semi-hibrination state in the far north.
You can catch them in regular gill nets under the ice if you need em for dog feed, tho.......

Oh its fall time. Migrating schools of bluefish, stripers and weakfish [seatrout] enuf to blow your minds !! Fish on every cast, land every third one.
Seatrout on top, blues under them, and stripers on the bottom, talk about a feeding frenzy. How I wish I was there now. About Oct 15 they would peak off Great Egg Harbor Inlet, near Atlantic City NJ.

Over time, unless you are in an isolated place like Alaska, I find that the "best" way to catch fish, is to 'live-line', presenting a bait in the most natural way drifting down in the layers on good structure, or following current, ' cause the lazy lunkers and 'hawgs [who got fat just sittin there, unlike us "overcommers"] are sitting there facing where the food is served.
Even in Alaska, I find the same holds true. One summers day I caught a limit of rainbows, and a limit of Dolly Varden, drifting chenille fake salmon eggs down the current of the Kenai River to where the trout were sitting facing up current as the sockeye [red] salmon spawned. Biggest was a 20" 'bow,that I should have returned to the water, but hey I was much younger then.....

| I took my 9 year old son fishing this past weekend. We had so much fun together. He caught a 8lb pike. Several small bass and lost about a 17inch crappie. He also caught about 200+ bluegills. He loves the outdoors. Nothing better than taking a kid fishing. I am sure he will remember it his entire life as I have the fishing moments with my dad and grandfather.

Though they are a pain in summer, I mainly fish for pike in the winter, they usually average around 17lb, we call pike up to 7lb Jacks, they used to eat them and over this weight was considered too tough. At the moment I like going for Tench although I happily accept all thats going, we operate on a catch and return basis.
Had a nice session lately with my Dad using a large fly and a bubble float for sea trout, had half a dozen fish running between 11/2 lb up to 3, we were sat on the beach with one of those home smokers, oak shavings and the little meths burner can't get fresher than that.

| the best fishing tips I recieved was to fish structure for all types fish in fresh water and use live bait when possible, for catfish I am sold on chicken liver, Saltwater is live shrimp or dead shrimp you do not need a bunch of expensive lures to catch fish. The weather has an effect on fish bitting but usually I fish for relaxation and to enjoy the outdoors if your looking to haul a lot of fish in you can get more for your money at the grocery store. I have found People who have a boat fish next to the bank to catch fish and them who do not try to cast to the middle of the lake,go figure I enjoy fishing if I catch any or not but thats just me Catfish1 Happy fishing and camping everyone

I've enjoyed all the tips and comments. I river fish, lake fish, and for pretty much anything that bites. I worked with an elderly man once who had ran a fishing establishment for many years. He said to watch the barometric pressure, the lower it gets the better they bite.
Personally I watch the moon. When it's at it's fullest stages you won't come away empty handed and on the day when the moon is full they bite like crazy, especially in the late Spring.

| Rob Ive seen pirch caught on chicken liver bass caught on bread nothing surprises me anymore. at any given time I think fish react to movement and chance. I had been fishing most of the day only caught 2 small fish a kid sit down beside me using a piece of his hamburger and caught a 12lb catfish right beside me go figure now thats luck, happy fishing and camping catfish1

| Look for shade... for both you and the fish. They aren't too keen about the bright sunlight either.
|
|
|
|
1. Take extra of everything, including sunscreen.
2. Adult beverages are ok as long as they are in moderation.
3. Take your own water or buy one of the water purifiers.
4. Enjoy the day, not many of us get out often enough.
5. If you are expecting to have fish for dinner, stop by the grocery store on the way back home and pick up fish. Don't expect to catch any

My only two:
~Make sure you have enough line out. Find bottom and reel up a bit from there.
~If your lure isn't working don't be afraid to change it up.
~Oh and if you're travelling with girls, be prepared to make pee stops!
I guess that's three.
