Heather,

You know women in the weight room don't bother me. You don't have to press 50 lb dumb bells over your head just because it's the weight room. Just work out with what you're comfortable with. My wife gets a workout with the soft 6 lb weights. If the guy is worried about what you look like, he's not there to work out anyway.

Chris,
If you've already got an outdoor bike, maybe look into getting an indoor trainer for it. Basically it converts your outdoor bike into a stationary bike (great for winter training!).

I cannot wait to get rehab-ed enough to join a gym. At this point it's pretty useless, but I have belonged to gyms before and I really liked the classes (yes that's probably one of a handful of girly things I like). If anyone's following the "spinning" thread in the guys lounge, that was the reason I joined a gym in the first place, and I still highly recommend them.

I always felt a little awkward though around these huge guys working the weights and my flabby grossness just pecking away at flimsy stuff. What do 'normal' guys think of girls in the weight room? Is there a good reason for womens-only gyms? (I'm personally more of an equalitarian in that aspect, if there's womens-only, I believe there should be men's only as well.)

Ugh, sorry about the long post again.

gotta agree with ya firefly, I'm motivated and focused, and generally feeling better about it all. I now have a full program and a great way to improve foot speed. the trainer suggested I go at a normal pace for 1 min. then full blast for 30 sec. tried it today and man did I get a sweat going.

My gym costs me about 26 per month, ellipticals, treadmills, all the weights, classes, etc, etc. Not as fancy as my last gym was (i.e. towel service, plugs on the machines for your headsets to tv) but it works for me. I like going to the gym because it motivates me, you get to see people who are in better shape and worse shape than you, keeps you focused on the goal I think....

for a couple at ours it was a $90 start up fee and $44 bi-weekly. our club is small but that's a small town for you. met with a trainer briefly tonight and she got us started and said the others there will help us with other exercises. they're even gonna put me on a program for hockey.

I made some calls and they volunteered the discounts for the family plan, but thanks for the idea . As far as the country club goes, They dont know what their missing, if they did money would be no object. Sounds good anyway. If it works out that you need to come up this way let me know, lunch is on me.

Jeff,

Make sure you ask for discounts if you're getting the whole family involved. Many gyms will have family packages. I had a couple emails back and forth with Eugene, I think I ended up being "over-qualified" for the job. It was the typ of thing where it would be a step back in my position, but offer more growth than my current job. I'm sure they didn't want to pay me what they would have had to pay. We'll see though, I don't think they've hired yet.

Jeff,

It completely depends on where you live and what kind of gym you join. We have gyms around here that range from $400 a year to a couple thousand per year. You should be able to find a decent gym for $30-$50 per month.

What should it cost say for a yearly membership?

Right on! We actually quit our gym when we started SP. Then about a year into SP we rejoined the gym and love going any chance we get. Theres no question that the gym offers better equipment.

I found it very helpful to join a club, attend at a regular time, and get to know some of the regulars. It makes the time pass much quicker.

For me, the bigger the club the better. I like plenty of options in my workout.
