If you can check out the Precor Universal Gym before you buy. It is the best universal I've owned and I've owned several. I did not have a Bowflex but I did have a Crossbow for a while. The Precor S3.21 is the fastest to change and easiest to use machine I have ever used and it was only a little more expensive than the Crossbow. My only disappointment is with the leg station and I would not buy it again. Also it is a little large for my wife but fits me fine. It does take a lot of space but no more than most of the others.

I've tried the Bowflex at my Sister-in-laws home and wasn't too impressed with it. As much as they cost, one could easily pay for a year at the gym.
I would highly recommend, if you are serious about a Bowflex, to look at a "Play it Again Sports" or other consignment shop for these machines. Every Sports consignment shop I've been to has at least one Bowflex for sale at a greatly reduced price.

I've never used the bowflex. I do prefer the machines at the gym compared to the freeweights. Aside from the safety factor, I know the machines have me in the correct motion. In addition to that, the machines at my gym have a setting where you can have two settings, one for positive motion and one for negative motion.
You can't go wrong with either one though. Just doing the strength exercise is what's important. The nice thing about free weights is that you can easily modify exercises to accomodate many muscle groups.
