Heather, I had the same thing happen, drank a ton (beer = 6lbs/gal. 2000/6=363gal I lost track at 6 beers) and still lost a pound. Sometimes things just happen that way, Keep it up !!

I bought 5 12packs on Thursday, had some people over on Sunday for a Surprise party for my wife, but all 5 cases are gone. OUCH!!! I wish I could limit myself to 3 beers in a weekend. I have a hard tiem limiting myself to 3 beers in an hour.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far.

Heather: Glad you had a good time. As to the weight loss, I'll bet it's back plus, tomorrow. Alcohol is a huge diuretic, and that's one of the reasons for a hangover. You're brain cells are actually dehydrated. After a night out consuming alcohol, try drinking 2-3 glasses of water - or better yet, Gator Aide. You'll feel much better off when you wake up!

Mike: Didn't mean to insult you, but young is Einsteinian, that is, it's relative. Sometimes you don't run into anyone who knows or cares enough to let you in on some of the little secrets to living with the great god *alcohol*. FYI, and it really pains me to say this, you are young enough to be one of my sons - so you are, relative to me, young. Just thinking of the strength and resiliance and endurance I had at your age .....................

Holy dina did I go to town last night. Can't even remember the drink count, but the night was definitely a good one. I reluctantly got on the scale this morning - blam - down one pound. I am very confused and attributing it to the crazy water levels in my body from the drinking.

Cheers, (groans and holds her head)

Thanks Bob you totally answered my question.
Now for the record I aint a young inexperienced drinker. I had more than my share in my youth. Then in my 30s I became a tea totaller. (or however ya spell it) Then I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2. Theat was several years ago. Just recently I rediscovered how flavorable beer is yet knew it was bad for diabetics. I read the ingredients and could not figure out why it was bad. Then Bob with all the knowledge and worldly wisdom really helped me out and answered my rather simple question whereupon in turn I related it to my fellow peers who was wondering the same thing. So by answering one question Bob has touched many lives. Good show!
Meanwhile I will limit my beer to three on the weekend (a day) making it a 6 pack all weekend at the max. I will consume light beer.
In all seriousness thanks for the help.

You mean like, "I'm on line with my bank and I put my card in this little thingy on the front of the computer, but it won't give me any money, what's wrong?"

It's the teacher and trainer in me. I give people credit for having some common sence, and forty years of experience should have knocked that stupid proclivity into a cocked hat. I apologize.

However, for what seems to be a relatively new (and maybe youg) drinker, it's the seasoned (or pickled)reponsibility to train up the lads and lassies as best we can.

I've got my own birthday party at the pub on Saturday - out the freakin window. The other concern with booze is the social aspect - inhibitions are lowered, mistakes could be made, etc etc, wink wink nudge nudge.

Ammewells,

Sorry, I danced all around the question without answering specifically. I am an insulin dependant diabetic. Alcohol is the equivelant of pure sugar in liquid form. It is absorbed almost instantly and your blood sugar can skyrocket.

Ammewells: There are no stupid questions. Only stupid people who don't ask questions.

The deal on beer, or any alcoholic drink, is the number of calories in the drink. While low in carbohydrates, the body changes alcohol into acetate in the body, and the body then burns the acetate JUST LIKE CARBOHYDRATES. Also, alcohol is a very POWERFUL appetite ACCELERATOR. The more you drink, the more difficult it is not to eat.

So how much can you drink and not go over your calorie max?

1-12oz beer (american) = 144 cal
1-5oz glass of red wine = 102 cal
1 shot of Apricot Brandy = 80 cal
1 shot of drambuie = 110 cal
1 shot 94 proof gin = 115 cal
1 shot of scotch, whiskey or rye = 107 cal

Some common drinks are:

Rum & coke = 127 cal
Rusty Nail = 223 cal
Brandy Alexander = 253 cal
Grasshopper = 255 cal
Harvey Wallbanger = 258 cal
Mai Tai = 310 cal

The particular bad thing for women is some of the acetate is converted to cellulite - which is very difficult to be rid of.

When you drink, make sure you account for the calories.

Mick, the reason that I specified American beer is that European beers are higher in alcohol content and higher in calories.

okay this is a stupid question,
but first hello. I have not been around spark for a while. Personal problems and all that jazz. Anyway I am back and hello.
Now the stupid question, what is it about beer that is bad for diabetics?
I have recently rediscovered that I like beer. I limit myself to 3 on a weekend. This weekend I had two. I looked up nutertional info and see nothing in it to cause a blood sugar raise yet everyone says beer is bad for diabetics.

From an OLD, experienced drinker. The reason the water works is that it rehydrates you. Alcohol by its nature causes you to loose fluids (in one end, out the other). IF you stick to the water, alcohol, water bit, and drink about a liter of water (quart for us americans) with an aspirin before crashing, almost the only hangover you'll experience is from the cig's and lack of sleep - which is much easier to survive.

I was never what you would call a heavy drinker, a case of flippies would last about two days and a fifth of good Scotch would last through the night, but age and diabetes took it's toll, so now I'm stuck with an occasional NA beer.

I spent about three years in Germany, and they have local brew pubs almost everywhere. They also have their own branded beer coasters. My wife still can't understand why I'm so proud of the 156 different beer coasters from Germany.

Here's a tactic for telling if you're too inebriated to drive. Take a beer coaster and hang it over the edge of the table, about 2/3 hanging over. Place your dominant hand below it and flip the coaster into the air. If you can't catch it, you shouldn't drive.

By the way, thanks to Hot Heather for mentioning this tavern on another topic (Heather, absolutely NO insult meant or implied. I'm old enough to be your dad or grandad - even though I'm old doesn't mean I'm dead! I mean the Hot as a compliment.)

Thanks for bringing back memories (some of which are absolutely spookie, like swimming the Colorado river and back when inhibitions had been washed away - no pun intended).

Bob

Mick and all. I don't think there's anyone on this topic I haven't "virtually" met before. It's great to see friends in another venue.

Be aware that to do so you will be fighting two main problems with the process of getting healthy, which is what people really want when they say they are dieting.

1) hunger

I can help you get past hunger with a suggestion that you get PSYLLIUM, which is a non-food, all fiber, all natural material that expands on contact with water. You take a heaping tablespoon in a glass of water and it normally fills me up for the whole day. If I should get hungry I take another glass.

2)Motivaion. These bulletins are filled with people who have lost the will to succeed. They grasp at any excuse to get off track. I suggest you stay away from people like that like the plague. Instead I suggest you log in to SP each day and read and take credit for reading at least 5 motivational messages and also write a few messages to others telling them of how and why you are being a success. In so doing you will help them, but more you will help yourself!

You have to develop the mindset NOW! to keep going when the scale says you are flat or going the wrong way...and believe me it will happen. It will also train your mind so that in the future you do not gain back all the weight you worked so hard to lose.

Remember this slogan:

If you do what you always did you will get what you always got. That works both ways...in most cases it keeps people from being a success but for the motivated person it helps him/her to keep being successful.

Saaaaame problems here folks.
I finally stopped drinking Sunday through Thursday. I just wasn't losing more than 1/4 to 1/2 pound a week.

It wasn't the calories of the booze alone- drinking makes me hungry and I care less about my long-term goals. I eat more of the wrong things, and skip my planned work-outs.

But - every girl has her limits - Friday and Saturday are every man for himself. I have to live and eating fine food, beer and red wine - I cannot live without. Now I enter the wine and beer on Friday morning. Let's face it - it's going to happen!

My beer of preference is of course Canadian. The brand of beer, not the adjective. And Donini Merlot is fantastic and cost only 13.00 bucks for 1.5 lite. Cheap!

Oh and drinking water between works - for the first two drinks. After that it just doesn't seem like a priority. Funny how that happens.

Extra workout time is good. I did something last week that was great, and I really impressed myself. I limited myself to one drink and hour. I still drank but it really helped me control the pace. I'll do that again it worked so well for me.

Well you can do what I always do, tell yourself your not going to drink, get there, drink to much and take a taxi home - work out for an extra 30 minutes in the morning - helps with the migrane too.

Good luck!

Alright guys - I need some serious motivation. Tomorrow night we're going out for dinner (good-bye party for a friend), which normally wouldn't be a problem, there's loads of Spark resources to solve that. However - we're going to Las Margaritas, which is one of the best places to drink in the entire city. So the question becomes do I drink a little, a lot, or none at all? How do I deal with the pressure of a party atmosphere, and not look like a freak on a diet...ugh.

Basically - need a few words of wisdom here from the experienced drinkers.

I agree, it is much more acceptable to sit at home and drink beer all by myself. :)

I ended up drinking beer again last night. :(

I'll just have to run more today.

Yeah - I hear hard liquor has much fewer calories then beer, but I like beer. And I don't know why but it just seems pathetic to sit at home drinking stright vodka.

Unfortunately I am at the point where in order to get reduced inhabitions I need to drink more than even your average college student. I just like beer. Now I guess I should drink it all during the weekend and then I won't drink during the week. It's a great theory, I don't know if it'll work.

The SP really helps me, even with the beer, I'm far more aware of what I eat too.

I'm finding it hard to cut down (or out) the alchohol in my life too, especially at parties or something. I just never really know how to decline it, especially because I really enjoy drinking. And the calories get even worse at a bar because you get the beer snacks to go along with the drinks.

Ugh- the joy of reduced inhibitions, will I feel you again without guilt?

I did it again. Got home and had a few beers last night. I guess I need to stop buying it except on the weekends. Went out with my wife and some work people this weekend and found a place with Pilsner Urquell on draft. I'll definately be back there.

I drink too much beer. It never lasts in my fridge for more than a few days. If I have it I drink it. I even started buying NA Beer to drink during the week. Not too bad flavor and way lower calories.

If I ever buy beer at home, i'll just end up drinking it - so I make sure I only drink when I go out - just try to cut back on what I used to drink [which was too much].

Very cool website, but I've never tried the beer. I've also seen a great commercial for bierbitzch beer (http://www.bierbitzch.com/download.html). Unfortunately another one I've never tried. I too love beer and it greatly inhibits my weight loss. So much beer, so little time...

Bootie Beer is very real...they have a website at www.bootiebeer.com

It looks like they are only selling in the south eastern US. Their slogan is "Grab a Bootie".
