Get a good heart rate monitor and wear it during your spin's. I use a Polar F6, about $99. It will tell you your max heart rate, average heart rate, calories burned, time of exercise, etc. etc. etc. It is a great tool for keeping track of how well you are doing. Have fun, keep on spinnin'

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, because i'm taking one at 9:45. It's the first one i'm taking at this gym, so I hope it goes well.

I agree with you-- it's the best cardio out there!

I wasn't aware of the amount of calories though.

I have been doing spinning classes for over 3 yrs, 2 or 3 times a week. I think it is about the best cardio you can do. I typically burn between 650-700 calories in a 50 minute spin class

There are many alternatives to enjoy.

Spinning is definately one I'm into right now while nursing a recovering ankle.

My doctor told me that I have arthritis in my left knee, so he told me I should give up running. Bummer!! Oh well, I have this new road bike.....

DRDEMARS, how do you like your Gazelle? My wife and I have discussed possibly getting one, but we want to make sure we spend our money on the right piece of equipment if we're going to bother buying something at all.

Had Football injury torn cartilage in college. After I quit football no problem. The only exercise then was a weights on the foot and lifting. I know new ways are used now but have no clue as to how. I don't run but use my Gazelle glider 30 minutes a day,

Thanks for the detailed info Scott. I am going to utilize those exercises to see if I can strengthen my left knee. I get differing opinions on the use of the knee brace. I know that I feel better when I use it, guess I will talk to my doctor about it.

After my pulled patela tendon many years back, the doctor told me to do leg lifts for strengthening these tendons. here are the exercises he recommended:

1. a. put a pillow under you knee
b. extend leg until straight
c. hold for 10 secs
d. repeat 5 times

2. a. lift leg unil 12 in off floor
b. hold for 10 secs
c. repeat 5 times

3. a. flex quad muscle
b. hold for 10 secs
c. repeat 5 times

I have also learned that running/walking with a brace will actually weaken the tendons supporting the knee, so even after all my knee troubles in the past I still don't wear a brace.

Great ideas here. I am going to try some strength exercises and start taking a chondroitin/glucosamine supplement. No way am I going to stop running!!

I have knee pain too when I run. So far I've just been taking a few days break b/w runs. I'll swim or use the elliptical instead, until my knees recover. But I think after reading this, I'll look into some strength exercises and re-examine which kind of running shoes to use. This thread has lots of great suggestions - thanks!

have noticed a reduction in knee pain with the strength exercises, except when it's damp probably arthritis.

Hi guys, here's my two cents, along with a brief recap (lol) of my knee woes. In Jan 06 I tore three ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL) and fractured my tibia plateau. Surgery, pain and bed rest and I'm still not able to run, or walk without a limp. More surgery is scheduled, but who knows when I'll actually get in (Canadian health system). BUT since the surgery, I have learned a lot about knee pain. First - a lot of post-run pain is caused by swelling, which is cured by icing your knee for 15 min, and if it's quite severe, you can take Ibuprofen before your run. Second, if you have knee pain during the run, it's almost certainly a matter of strengthening the muscles of your knee. There are very specific exercises you can do, maybe check the internet, but I have fallen in love with physiotherapy. Sorry, that turned into a long post (Sorry Chris C. - long post, and big words, lol).

I have been having problems with my left knee over the last few months. It really gets bad after a hard run. I have been wearing a knee brace of late and that seems to help some. I think I will try the chondroitin/glucosamine supplements as some of you have. My wife has been taking it for a couple of years, I don't know why I didn't think of it.

As a former Marine Corps infantryman, I used to run, on average, about 7 miles a day. Over the course of 8 years that started to take it's toll. I had my knee "scoped" in 2002, and have found it hard to run since then, which has been a factor in my weight gain. That was basically my main exercise, once I lost that, it was curtains!!! I am trying to start out again, with brisk walks, then will move back up to running, but the knee always bothers me. I have tried braces, but they seem to throw off my stride, and generally get in the way.

When I started running I had a lot of knee pain. I am still having left knee pain. I tried a brace that had a stay on the inside and it actually made things worse. I've concluded my knee just needs strengthening so I'm adding resistance exercises. I am also taking glucosimine and condroitin and that seems to have helped.

I really agree on the use of the elliptical too. Actually once I've run outside and my left knee is hurting I can get on the elliptical and spend a few minutes and the pain is really reduced. I especially like alternating from forward to backward stepping. Don't know why exactly it makes my knee feel better but it surely does.

I went to a runner's specialty store for new shoes too. The person who helped me suggested a different brand and showed me how to tie the shoe better. That helped a lot.

I HAD knee pain when I first started running (started the C25K program last October). It's been there all the time except the last couple of weeks - the difference?

I have taken to running more on the balls of my feet - I don't want this to get into an argument about forefoot as opposed to heel striking debate, just adding my 2 cents. The base of my calves and achilles hurt for a couple of days after, but this has cleared up and no more knee pain whilst running either. Try it for a 100 yards or so and see if it actually helps your knees.

I wear the brace playing hockey, so I was thinking it'd be a good idea to wear it running.

I too have really bad knees, they constantly crack and hurt. I have to wear braces anytime I go running. Most of my training is on the ellipitcal machine so that way I can save my knees. Once and a while I will go run on the treadmill and at the park just to keep up my times but it hurts after I do so!

I wear a knee strap. Cho-pat.

Helps, I WAS a runner years ago, but a regular job and knee pain drove me out. Now I'm working back in. Doctor also recommended leg extensions, one leg at a time with lighter weight to help keep the knee cap tracking straight.

You can get a heavy grade paper or a large paper bag from the grocery store, place it on the ground. next to it place a pan with water in it, just enough to wet the bottom of your foot. Step on it, then step on the bag. Look at your foot print. I pronate when I run. I have flat feet. so I need a shoe with alot of support. My foot print doesn't look like a classic footprint, like what you see on pics of sand and so forth. No arch. You can find out this info and pics on the internet and a good shoe store should be able to help you also.

What brand of the supplements are you taking? I have heard some don't contain as much as they claim.

I'm not sure how bad your knees are but when I started back running my knees gave me fits. I started taking glucosimine and condroitin supplements and have very little if any pain what so ever when I run now. This may or may not help you but it did wonders for me.

Hey Leather - how do you figure out stuff like the right kinds of shoes? I'm not a runner, but love basketball. My height and weight have not done my knees very good, and I'm trying to figure out what I can do to help.

I have had knee troubles in the past and really do a lot of cross training to help get in better cardiovascular shape and strengthen my legs without the pounding. elliptical seems to be the best x-training exercise for me.

It helps to run on softer surfaces. I run on the street so I don't have to dodge mailboxes and so forth. Look up on the internet couch potato to 5k plan and start with that. It is very easy. you don't want to push yourself too much and get discouraged.

I had my medial meniscus cut out. It was tore and not worth repairing. I started training by doing the "from couch to 5k" plan. I had knee problems at first but I learned to stretch appropriately and bought shoes that match my running style. I am just now getting back into it, (took winter off, bad idea), and if I stretch correctly, I don't have pain when I run. Where I run it is extemely hilly and I can't run the with the speed or distance I did last year but you need to start slow. Look up the couch to 5k plan. It is great. My brother in law started 1 year ago and has already won a few 5ks, 10ks, and participated in the mini marathon at disney. He runs a sub 7 mile and has lost 55 lbs. When he first started he could barely run 1 minute. Also, he has had knee surgery on both knees.

I have bad knees and I have found hope with doing cardio on an elliptical trainer. I love it. I was walking and jogging outside and using a tredmill and my knees would ache. So now I use an elliptical trainer and I dont feel knee pain anymore. There is little to no force on any joints and I can usually do about 25 minutes which usually leaves me quite sweaty.

was wondering if anybody who has bad knees that run, and what you do to make it easier on your knees.
