Weekends suck. I've been at this for two weeks, I do great all week -- lost five lbs last week and 5 lbs this week then gained all of it back on the weekends.

Well, at least I know my weakness. This weekend I'm staying on the diet!

ok now I know I need to stick to this. I fell off the wagon today. My son had his freshman orientation for HS for next year and they had a "pizza social" after. I ate 2 pieces of Domino's extra large cheese pizza, a can of pepsi and a small bag of Lay's. I entered it as my lunch and it was almost all of my calories for the day!!!!!! I guess I can't eat dinner tonight. lol oops!!

Thanks for the info Veron', i checked out the coolrunning website and according to the beggining runners couch to 5k schedule, i'm doing better than i thought, i'm already working at a week 6 schedule of running 2 miles in 20 minutes, i think i'll continue doing that for another couple of weeks and move on to 2.5 miles in 25 minutes.

Hey MilkMan, I've heard a lot of people on here recommend the "couch to 5k" plan. Also, a search on the web should show loads of potential plans. Most of them (if not all), will be incremental. Run for 1 minute, walk for 4 for one week, next week run for 2, walk for 3. etc.
I did my 5k training through my community center, that might work too for you.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Congrats, Chric.C. I kinda get the picture. I've been watching my waistline grow for years (from a 32" to a 38") and figuring it would stop eventually. No such luck. I have to actually try to get it gone if I want it gone; something I'm not used to.

Anyway, good to hear your feeling good about yourself. Continued success! Michael

Michael,
My doctor told me that simply walking/running and watching my diet is not enough to burn the fat which needs to be burned. A light weight training program is best. You don't need to bench 350 and squat 500 to get results. I'm sure you know muscle weighs less than fat, and weight training to build muscle tone is always a good idea.
On a side note, thank you for your service in the FD. Guys like you are the true heros of our society. Keep the faith.

Welcome guys. May you reach all the goals you have set for yourself. We girls have formed all kinds of groups nad I guess you have done or can do the same. Oh I like the fiber in a glass idea to curb cravings and over-eating. Thanks and all you guys have a great and healthy day.Oh I was reading that guys need Saw Palmetto to protect them from prostate issues and those over 40 might consider a low dose aspirin a day, lots of fish oils and at least half hour a day exercise. But check with your doctor first. I am not a doctor.Good luck

Thanks, Bob.

I was reading some of your earlier messages, noted your "turning 40" next month. Good luck with that. Its inevitable, but still seems like a milestone.

I have never had to think about what I eat, so this is an adjustment in itself. I just came from the nutrition/ meals planning page. I hope its easier to stick to than I am anticipating.

I work in the FD, so physical condition matters, but the actual process of "working out" is what I loathe. I have begun walking/running on my on-duty days, but its minimal so far; better a little than none at all, right? I expect to up my exercise gradually, getting to where I am walk/running 2-5 miles each shift. You think weight training is a necessity as well? I can join a couple of the guys if I need to, but I hesitate at the idea.

Thanks again for your input- I appreciate it. Michael

Michael,
since you didn't weigh yourself before you started it's possible you were not as heavy as you thought you were. The scale is my biggest enemy, I haven't weighed myself since February. I probably weigh more than the 225 I claim, but still have 170 as my goal. As far as low-carb dieting, I have tried it and haven't really had any success. I may lose 10-15 lbs in the first week then nothing else. the diet that SP has me on is mostly rice and beans, I feel like I am back in Japan, and I have noticed a difference just in how I feel in a week. Exercise is important as dieting alone will not get you there, I know because I've tried dieting only. I symphasize with you for not enjoying it, but it does help. The difference I feel after working out can vary from sore to just not feeling so tired. I do 60 minutes a day on an eliptical and weight training a 3 days a week. It will help.
MIKTHINNER

I have been on a "low-carb" diet for 2 days now. I think I can tell a difference already, but its probably just psychological. Forgot to weigh myself before I started, but was about 215 @ last Dr. visit. My home scales are not accurate, because I know I didn't lose 20lbs in the last 2 days. I do feel different in my stomach, though. Could it really be happenning?

I know, or at least have heard time & again that "low-carb" is not really the way to go, but I began it the day I found SP. Figure I need to keep at it until I can implement a better plan.

I have never liked working out, or especially running, but I think I have to face the fact that I NEED to do these. I turned 40 not too long ago & I am really starting to look my age (& then some).

Still have a lot to learn about eating right & living healthy. My wife knows a ton about that, but I can't seem to get it to sink in.

Any ideas for weaning off low carb & getting into healthy eating? Love to hear about them. Thanx all, Michael

Rick:

I'm glad to meet you. I have about 100 lbs. to lose myself. I have placed myself on a 2000 calorie diet. I include vegetables, fruits, and various rice and fish entrees. This diet, along with a small amount of walking every other day is the ticket. I don't deprive myself of the foods that I enjoy. I just use smaller portions. I have my three basic meals, along with two to three snacks. Eat something every four to six hours and drink lots of water.

Another important factor to consider is the lowering of your cholesteral. I've been told by various doctors that a teaspoon of cinnamon every day helps lower your cholesteral. I've also included the usage of garlic tablets, 8oz of cranberry juice, and or grape juice. The cranberry juice aids in cleansing the arteries, and the grape juice, along with walking aids in raising, what is known as your good cholesteral.

Changing the portions you eat, adding the various supplements (garlic, and cinnamon), drinking plenty of water with each meal, drinking cranberry juice and grape juice, and walking will aid in your weight loss.

Hi Rick, I am Bob. I have about 50 to lose myself. I have found the last 5 years floating back and forth from 200-225 that persistance and preserverance(?) are the best tools. Until I started with Sparkpeople a week ago, dieting and exercise were my enemies. My weight has always been an issue in my marriage and it is something I never took serious. As I hit 40, it is time to take care of myself. Start slow, I started with a 15 minute walk and am now up to 60 minutes on an eliptical. Baby steps!! I keep smiling and telling myself that today is the day I take care of me!

I started in March. Being a diabetic and experiencing my second bout with pancreatitis I decided to again try losing weight and exercise. I like being able to track what I'm eating. I've lost 15 pounds since I've been on this site, plus another 15 prior to joining. I find that without exercise(biking, walking, gazelle) that I don't lose what I want. My goal is 200lbs by March of 2007.

This is my one month anniversary and in that month I have adopted a program (my own design) in which I accomplished the following:

Down 17 pounds (For twenty years I was in a ten pound range of 232 to 242)
Lost 3 inches in my waist
Lost 4 inches in my hips
However, the thing that impresses me the most is that I am never hungry and for the first time in life I am turning down seconds on food and even putting part of what is served to me back on the serving plate.

One "secret" I found along the way was to have a daily glass of water with a heaping tablespoon of Psyllium. Psyllium has no calories, all fiber, and fills you up so you lose hunger cravings.

I work out, at the gym for 1 to 1.5 hr every day 6-7 times a week, and then go into the jacuzzi to rest and gather some sunshine (need the vitamin D).

Not bad for a 74 yr old guy.

The thought never occurred to me that most members were women. I am trying to lose 50 lbs., from 230 to 180. Have lost 19 lbs. in 9 weeks, which is a little ahead of schedule.

I find so many people achieving their goals to be very encouraging. Sometimes (actually, often) the thought of reaching my goal weight seems unreal or impossible. Even though the results to date have been ideal, the thought of being 180 lbs. again is too good to be true.

Good luck to everybody and keep living well!

I recommend going to the supermarket and getting a container of cut up fruit (variety) and take it to work with you. It'll give you energy and it will kick start the metabolism. Pick a time each day and write it down (or put it on your computer) and use that 15-30 min to eat the fruit and plan the rest of the day.
You'll find in a few weeks your stomach will remind you to have the fruit - the good news is fruit is good for you too.

Wow ... this is a very interesting thread. I'm not a guy as I'm sure you could tell by by screen name and pic. :)

It is amazing to see how many of us have suffered due to being overweight. The nasty comments, the lost loves, lost jobs, low self esteem and sooo many more negatives that I wouldn't even try to list them all here. There are a lot of us that have been thru this and each and everyone of us handles this stress differently. Some of us where it on our sleeves and some of us bury deep deep inside. There is no right way to deal with being overweight but we have all made a goal to reach and made the first step by joining SparkPeople. Not all of us will follow this program as it is layed out and that is a decision each of us has to make as an adult.

I wish all of you success in achieving your goals but most of all I wish you good HEALTH.
