I am new to the board. I've only been on it for about three weeks. I am 6'2" and I'm looking to loose 55 pounds. I love to eat and have had a hard time lately being hungry. I am trying to eat more but healthy like apples and the like. I think this site is great and is helping to stay focused.

Welcome to Spark People - I call us "sparkles" because, together, we can all shine!

My inspiration all the time, and especially so when all else fails, is to read ideas and encouraging words from others with the same goals.

Do you have any health issues or just want to lose weight - any other health issues must be considered when mapping out your "eating-for-life" plan.

I'm not a physician or dietician but will be glad to give you ideas that work for me, when I know whether you have health issues to consider - just be sure to check with your doc before undertaking ANY weight-loss program.

And, not to be fussy, but you gotta find time to eat during your work day - it's not healthy to skip meals and doing so will cause overeating later.

Jolaine aka Jo for short

P. S.: I'm not a guy but I have one at home, for the past 24 years tomorrow 5/6/06. He's very supportive and so are my co-workers, some of whose goals are the same as mine.

Geeze, I didn't know there was a guy's lounge!

I was "just one of the guys for years and years and years" (yes, I'm old); then, quit the "guy's club" because I got tired of listening to their "fat women put-downs".

Totally refreshing to hear guys talking about losing weight and getting fit instead of flexing their testosterone-filled muscles.

Not that I have a single problem with testosterone!!!

I was just thinking of the same question about where are the guys. I just started the diet this week and have a goal of 80 pounds in 53 weeks (250 to 170). I am pretty surprised that I can eat up to 2000 calories a day if I get some exercise every day. I happen to live 30 walking minutes away from my office and so I started doing this both ways every day. Not too bad and a lot better than jogging!!!

I agree with DRDEMARS about the construction piece. I am working on landscaping projects and just digging a few ditches for irrigation pipe will allow you to burn calories and also provide you with tangible results for you and the family to enjoy.
If you don't have any of that, get out the push mower and cut the grass - 30 minutes will go by quick and it is considered cardio.

If you want to burn a lot of carbs do some construction, Guys. I have started adding on to my house. Actually enclosing a patio and changing it into a computer and sewing room. I'm amazed that I can burn 2,000 calories during the day and constuct a worthwhile project.

WHY??? You could kill yourself this way as well as being fat. You are straining your whole body! I need to lose 150 lbs. I have lost about 8 in a month. Just perfect. I will keep it off and you probably won't, as you saw when you "slacked off" of training. You cannot train like that for your life.

Well,
sorry to be so harsh, good luck to you

Guy here. I hit 300 recently, so I decided it was time to take action. I don't really have a set goal weight, I just want to feel better and more athletic. I am only 21, and am obsessed with basketball. I guess my real goal is to be able to dunk. I am 6'3" with really big shoulders and thighs. A few years ago, when I was only 6'1" or so, I could get the rim, and I weighed about 235 or so. With an added 2 inches and some added leg strength, I feel I could get up there at 240 or so. Even at 300, I can still almost get rim.

Yet another guy. I started mid-March, down 18 pounds. Goal is to hit 180 by The Lovely Bride's birthday in September. Since I'm in front of a computer all day, it's very easy to enter everything - which is what keeps me honest.

I've started riding my bike alongside TLB when she runs in the evening (she's a 5-10 K gal). She says that's the best gift I've ever given her. - Who knew?

Great site. Thanks, Spark, for all the cool gadgets!

Another Guy -

I think this site is great - it seems a little female oriented (workout types, etc.) but it is still great.

I've lost 30 pounds since Dec 6, 2005. I joined SP around Feb and have lost 9-10 pounds since SP.

SW: 252 Dec 6, 2005
CW: 222 May 4, 2006
GW: 190 Oct 17, 2006

I am working out intensely preparing for my first sprint triathlon (on 6/18/2006) in years (only the sprint version - but its a start) and have been logging my working in the journals.

My real problem is with eating too much - and this site helps keep me on track. I am much more conscious about what I eat - because I track it everyday.

To ALL of you men and women - BRAVO

Keep up the great Work - YOU CAN DO IT !

I'm a guy. I've been here since mid-March, and have lost 18lbs. That brings me from obese to overweight. Another 22lbs and I will be in the healthy weight range for my height and body build.

When I first joined I posted on a board only to find that everyone else on the board was female. Indeed, often people would refer to "everyone" on the board as ladies! When I let them know I was a guy they were welcoming, but ... it is good to know there are other guys here.

I am responding to WNJury's incredibly honest writing. I don't mean to be in the men's section, but I don't know how else to respond to him. I totally understand what you said. Many times doctors, although they know that you might gain 20 lbs from some pill, they just feel that it will help one thing, and you'll have to deal with the other. I have so many friends that that happened to. they were already 'chubby', and then they went to their doctors that they trusted, and bam, their on some fat producing pill that brings them into obese, and their sociol life totally stops, dates never call them back, and they can't even get started. Its great tht you're on this site. I'm about 20 over, and it is amazing how many great first dates I go on, after lots of time on the telephone, and then bam, never hear from them again. With the pain that I feel when that occurs at 20 lbs, I feel for anyone even more than that. The 'general public' has been cruel to so many people taht I speak to. Perhas as all of us lose, we'll become a better general public. Non judgemental and we'll actually value getting to know someone first and not judge the outer shell. Don't give up the faith. You sound like a really great person in the heart and you can beat this weight thing. And I learned to listen to myself first, and I realized that doctors don't always have my wellbeing foremost in their mind. They don't look at what something else can cause, they bandage this problem. Stay with this, and let lots of people know about this site. And please, when you become the stud-muffin that you're aching to be, don't be one of those judgemental sob's who only date women who look like a stick with a chest.

I am in the military myself, not a marine, air force. I am also in my early thirties and I have found that it is getting harder and harder to stay in shape. I know exactly how you feel when people say the same thing about me. I also have a pretty attractive wife and sometimes I wonder if people are thinking, how did that guy get a wife like that.

You aren't the only one thinking these things and it is great that you are open to discussing it. The best thing to do is start out slow and just stick with it. You aren't the same 20 year old marine anymore, I have found that out the hard way, so you have to pace yourself. Consistency is the best thing at first, until you get back into a routine. You have to make your exercise and eating plan part of your life, not just something you are doing to get back in shape, it has to be a full fledged life style change.

I also found that if I jump in too strong at first, I will lose interest really quickly.

I have tried every diet and exercise plan that is on the market and I have also taken classes on health and fitness, healthy eating, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, etc so I am more than welcome to share what I know with anyone who asks. I am no expert, but I have tried it all and I can tell you what worked and didn't work for me.

Hope this helps. There is a great support network here, I have been reading posts here for a while and I just decided to start posting here. Good luck to everyone.

I am a guy, I am here, I have the same trouble on the weekend.

The program that I am on, which is a combination of the Spark program and the Body for life program, allows for one free day each week. I use my free day on the weekend because that is when I find it the most difficult to maintain my program.

The free day is extremely important, mainly from an emotional and psychological point of view. It keeps me motivated and it helps me to get all the cravings out of my system so I can concentrate on staying on course.

I also try to do things that I enjoy on the weekend that involve exercise, as opposed to my normal workout.

Does anyone have any pointers for the weekend.

I'm coming up on my first weekend on the program and like everyone else, I do great all week and loose it on the weekends.

It's not so much the food as it is the beer. I start drinking beer Friday night and continue until Sunday.

LATERALUS73 -- Although I've never been in the military I know what you mean about getting older. In my 20s I was normal weight, in my 30s I was overweight and now in my 40s I have high cholesterol (268) and my doctor told me Monday, May 1st that if I didn't drop the weight I'd be a type 2 diabetic by next year.

I started with spark on Monday, right after visiting with my doctor and so far it has been working -- I've dropped 2 lbs so far which is probably just water weight but its two lbs less.

I find that if I enter everything I eat it helps keeping me in line. It also makes me think about what I'm eating.

Good luck, stick with it and you'll reach your goal.

I am a 33 year old former Marine Corps machine gunner. Over the last few years it has become harder and harder for me to stay in shape, with the kids, work, and everything else that life throws at you. I have really put on the pounds since leaving the military, not too much, but just enough to know I need to change. The most disappointing thing to me is when people hear I am an ex-Marine and they look at me like "There's no way this guy was a Marine". I used to be in good shape, and as I get older I know I NEED to be healthy in order to be around for my kids. Hopefully this site can help, so far I like the look of it and the plans are pretty straightforward. Anyway, wish me luck, I am trying to go from 230 to at least 195. Good luck to the rest of the guys!!!

That's the whole key.I joined 3 weeks ago, lost 14 lbs.I live in Las vegas where food is king.YES it is hard.Everyday you feel like your going to go back to the way you used to eat, sometimes I do,But only for 1 meal. You have to keep yor goal in mind 24 hours a day.Keeping track of my food takes time, but keeps you motivated.I keep mine on a piece of paper, than go back on line to my food journal.I have learned so much from this, and if your brother wants to lose weight, this is the best place to come. We'll help him.

Hey Roland - I just bought one of the Polar F6 monitors - didn't want to spend much money and wanted to keep it simple. I'm not that familiar with the different features of all the different brands and models but I can say having the HR and calorie information has made my workouts more effective - I've been using it about a week and found that I was probably not keeping my HR high enough while doing cardio and that, during some stages, getting it to high. While of course any exercise is better then not doing it at all I like the idea of being as efficient as possible to help me achieve the maximum benefit from the time I spend.

I do need to warn about something on the Garmin. It may be that I just haven't figured it out, too. You get calories burned on running and Cycling. There is an Other category for other sports. But for use inside for instance on my elliptical I was never able to get a calories burned reading from the Garmin. I didn't spend much time looking for a solution so there may be one. At any rate just fyi.

ROLLAND - I have the Garmin Forerunner 301 - which has the GPS and HRM. It is really excellent. The 305 is supposed to have much improved GPS reception especially for areas where there are lots of tall buildings, trees, and so on. I use it only for my outside running though. When I work inside I still use my Polar.

Woohoo! There's MEN on this board? :)

Just wanted to tell you all good luck with your goals!

WnJury - You probably won't want to hear this, but I'll say it anyhow. It's fantastic that you're working to improve your health and that you have such strong determination.

I think you need to turn it down a notch, though. You're concerned about having health problems due to being overweight - you can also give yourself a whole new set of health problems by going to the extremes that you are. Burning that many calories and only consuming so little calories is putting a major strain on your body. You've already experienced overtraining injuries, and I can promise you more will come if you continue at your current pace.

KEEP working out - but not so hard and not for so long and eat your minimum 1200 calories. Any weight you gained recently is likely a backlash from your body in response to the extreme workouts and extremely low calories.

Hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears - just concerned for you. I'd hate to see you under the knife because you beat your body up trying to lose weight!

Be nice to your body - it's not the enemy! :)

Woman here...
I've been doing SP for 3 weeks and I love it but it is time consuming sometimes when looking up foods and such. The time it takes doesn't bother me so much but it takes away from my family. Anyway, long story short, I want to get my 300+ brother to try something, ANYTHING, to lose some weight. Do you feel it takes too much time and patience measuring your food and looking up foods/calories??? Or is it kind of addictive to do? I would like the male perspective on this. Thanks!

I may not be a "guy", I am all woman. But, I had to reply when I saw your message. It is dangerous to lose weight fast as it is to gain it. When I had lost 110lbs. in as little as 6 months it caused a serious health problem. I went on an almost zero fat, 800 calorie a day liquid diet. I ended up with zillion of gall stones and had to have my galbladder removed! The pain was almost unbearable until it was diagnosed many months later. Unfortunately, due to a severe back injury, and many medications later, I have once again gained my weight back. :( Only this time, I will tackle it with knowledge and patience. Good luck to everyone and be smart about it!!

Hi Lee,

Don't get down about the 6 pounds. Some things to keep in mind:

1) 15 pounds is a lot to have lost in a month. It is natural for your body to make adjustments and based on the exercise you've been adding some of it is surely muscle.

2) Even when your on the 1-2 lbs/week plan you will see fluctuations. I've seen as much as 4 lbs up and down over the course of a week or two and I'm smaller than you.

3) Right on! Keep pressing on, your doing awesome!

I own a business, which means by default I am the lead saleman. I know plently of what it like to meet a prospect for the 1st time and probably the last time weighing in at 300ilbs.

I know the feeling of being treated as just one of the girls because I am 'Safe'. What semi attractive woman would want a person that I used to look like?

More then that, when you are fat you are looked on as lazy or someone who is not in control. Which niether one I ever was. Depressed yes, lazy never.

The natural thin folks have no idea what it is like to get on the scales and see some fresh new pounds for no other reason than we just weighed in.

Harse words I know, but I dealt with this fat crap ever since I was in was a kid. The military got me to a lean mean 180 and I stayed within 20lbs of that until Dr. Frankenstien prescribed me some pills when I was 42 years old that got me over 300 ilbs. I was not what you would call a jovial fat person. Just the opposite. When he suggested I excerize and diet I suggested he give me the pill that would take the weight off in as many days as the other pill put on me. He laughed. He Laughed. I could of been put in jail for life for what I was thinking.

So when woman think they have it harder then men when it comes to looks and fitness, well they are just clueless, which is pretty much the norm when they try to tell men how to feel.

How many of us men have a closet full of 'fat' clothes that we thought would cover up the problem?

How may would wear a jacket as far into the spring in hopes of covering up the gut?

How many of us would just rather stay home rather than to risk the possibility of the stares and quite comments about us?

I am sure ya'll have many more that I have either forgotten about of just never forgot about.
