Yeah - woman always say there is no pressure on men to be in shape - but ask a woman who she would want to date and see how many of them say John Goodman or Danny DeVito, probably about as many men that would say Oprah or Star Jones. . .

ya know i get kind of tired of women telling me how there is so much less pressure on men to be thin.
I feel plenty of pressure from society...
Not that it is as much as a woman, but it is more than enough to make me feel like crud.
BTW male eating disorders are increasing much faster than womens. Those pressures are becomeing greater and greater on guys too.

Don't even let yourself get down over this. The eating binges for me anyway are always caused by me thinking how I am not eating...not because I am hungery.
I have tried the nibbling all day thing and all it does for me is make me hungery.
Good luck to you.

leatherlung - i agree, one of the best things about this site is finding out just how many calories, fat, etc. are in everything. i know this has made a huge difference in the food i eat...i'm trying to learn to control my portions, and it's been helpful to know how many calories i'd be taking in if i had double portions.
i've been on this site for about two weeks, and have lost 3.6 pounds. i started at 240, and i'm going to make it to 160 eventually.

| I've been on here a little over a month. I had lost 15 pounds until a couple of days ago, I've gone on an eating binge. I got on the scales this morning and it said 295.5 which is a 6.5 pound weight gain. That doesn't seem possible. I will see what the doctor scales says tomorrow. But I'm not going to let this get me down. I'm pressing on.

| Guy here. This site is excellent because it teaches you just how bad the bad stuff is. I have a stressful job, firefighter, which requires me to work 24 hour shifts. If I don't plan out my meals then I will usually eat out and there are not many good choices out there. I would say the main thing is portion control and another problem I have that is not talked about much is eating too fast. Anyway, when I plateau I hope the ideas mentioned here will work. Down 15 lbs in about 2 months. If you work public safety join my firefighter group.

WNJURY.....Thank you for sharing how bad this kind of routine can be for a person, and for clarifying that you would NOT recommend it to other people.
People often wonder what kind of dangers are involved with rapid weight loss. The reverse, rapid weight gain, can be one of them, also, the injuries, feeling horrible, etc. Whether people like it or not, there are reasons why SP, and most professionals, will recommend losing only 1-2 lbs per week. Before anyone considers trying rapid weight loss please consider your health. It is just as unhealthy to lose weight quickly as it is remain overweight.

| Hi guys! Been sparking since January and have been on a wild roller coaster ride with my weight since then. I started at 324 about a year ago and had lost down to 285 on 1 October 2005. Since then I have gained about 22 back and was at 307 on New Years. Right now I am at 297 and trying to head back in the right direction. I am back to working out at least 3x a week. I have a Bowflex in my garage and I love it! I am wanting to get to 225 by June 2007. That is my long term goal and I also want to get back into my kilt again! Everybody keep up the good fight and hang in there.

I am down 60 pounds since January 19th 0f 06, and 103 total pounds since May of 05. Must caution however this puts a real strain on the body. There is considerble workout time needed for such a loss to occur. I ran 3000 - 4000 calories aday deficit, I suffered multiple injuries ( worst on being a real bain pinch nerve in l4 and l5. I counld not feel anything from my nipple line down to my toes on my front side and mid back down to my heals for 2 weeks. And I do mean I could feel nothing. This got my attention but not enough I guess because I never stopped working out. I just cut back a little on the high impact cardio workouts
I think you have to be obcessed to do it this way because I worked through every injury. Right now I have real bad blister on my right foor. So instead of 2+ hours aday at 15 degree incline on the treadmill at 5 mph I do only 1.5 hours at the same speed at the same incline. If you are looking for pure fat burn there is no better way in my opinion for this setup on a comfortable tread mill.
My wife is right when she just shakes her head when I walk out the door for another work out, but I have to do what I have to do.
I do in my heart believe that I have to do this. I am paranoid like I have never been at the thought of some stranger cracking open my chest to re-plumb me. And I do know God allowing me to be 50 years old 3 weeks from today has me a little spooked also.
I am now trying to back off a little and I have put on 7 pounds in 8 days, so I am going to have to go back on the en ating plaa little until I get things stabilized a little and get my weight down to 179. I am at 195 as of this morning. This means no more then 850 calories a day, and at least 2 hours of hard cardio a day(about 2300 calorie burn).
I do not reccomend this to anyone except myself.

| Male here. I've needed this exercise tracker all along and not realized it, I guess. I had never heard of this site until women at work and online started telling me about it. Certainly the places it's being advertised are female-oriented. At first I assumed it was just for women, and maybe it is, or was. Too bad, they're stuck with me until I drop this weight.

| Not a guy...but I wanted to just put it out there that maybe there are more girls on this site because of the standards that are set up in our society for women- that they should be thin and have a good body. There is a lot more body image pressure on women.

Not a guy either, but this is a really interesting statistic. I think maybe the reason so many guys don't use this site is perhaps b/c women all want to lose weight, and most men want to gain muscle! Therefore our diffrent goals lead us to react and post accordingly. However, I think there are great resources for guys.
For all of you just starting out I want to say welcome and good luck! You can do it!!!

Just a heads up that 80 lbs in 4 months isn't recommended. There are some serious side effects that can come from losing weight so rapidly. SP definitely doesn't recommend losing weight this quickly. Please be careful with such progress.

Another guy here. My gf got me started on sparkpeople and I find it very helpful. Hey Dteresh,
your making awesome progress. good work. I don't know why you would think you would be loosing strength though. As long as your eating enough protein you should get stronger with more exercise.
| Yeah, I'm pretty hardcore about it. Lots and lots of cardio, a low calorie intake (but above 1200) and weight training 4-5 times a week. The odd thing is that my muscle strength is continuously increasing, even though I should be getting weaker with my calorie intake. No idea what my BF% is, though, since I can't quite figure out how calipers work. :(

| I've been using the website for 16 weeks now and can't say enough about it. Been through some ups and downs, good days and "not so good" days. In my opinion, the key is persistence. After 5-6 weeks of exercise, it has become routine. Portion control for me is now nearly automatic. I've lost 32 pounds so far and feel better than I have in 10 years. Rock on Spark People!! Nothing is impossible once you set your mind to it!!!

that's a common problem chris. i used to do the same thing. sometimes you just have to make yourself eat something. even if it's just a banana or some kind of snack bar or something to even out the food in your day. i always liked the idea of eating one portion of something and making yourself wait 20 minutes before eating more of it. 7 times out of 10, you'll realize you're not hungry anymore or that your craving for what you have been eating has been satisfied.
good luck brother. we're here for you. (listen to me ... been here for a week and i sound like i've been here for years). hahaha

| Started about 3 weeks ago - eating better and started cardio pretty regular - 3 to 5 times a week, no weight loss yet, better food but still to much of it - I have to get better about eating more often in smaller portions - I go 10 - 12 hours sometimes w/out food - then when I finally eat I'm so hungrey I just stuff myself.

Guy here. I never counted calories before but now I see why people do. I lost 15 lbs within my first two weeks and have kept it off. My weight loss rate is now more realistic at about 1 lb per 10 days. I'm starting to get more regular in my cardio exercises. I need to somehow get into strength training soon.
I'm learning to eat not to be hungry instead of eating to be full.

Hi there!
I actually just switched over to Spark, I was doing weight watchers (and seeing a lot of progress!) but I felt like doing points left too much up to chance as far as monitoring what I was eating. I switched to Spark because now that I've lost a lot already (about 38 pounds) I'd like to slow down and take the last 10-15 slowly and healthily. In fact, I think this is my only second post... so, hi!
yet another guy in Spark! Great program! I started 3 weeks ago and have already lost 8 lbs!
Been on SP since the beginning of the year. Started at 235, now at 202, and looking to get down to 175 by 8/1. With summer coming, that'll be tough (I'm a huge fan of the 12oz. sudsy delights; especially on warm summer nights).
I don't use the boards often. In fact, I am finding it hard to take the time to record the food and exercise anymore. I guess I'm getting burned out. Any suggestions on how to maintain the momentum?

| The thing you'll notice about those pill advertisements: they say that they work with a healthy diet and/or exercise. If you're eating a healthy diet and/or exercising, you don't need the pills....
The two best things about SP are 1) It works and 2) Its free.
I have to wonder why people pay hundreds of dollars to join a weight loss clinic that makes exagerated claims (10 lbs in one week).
I also have to wonder how these companies are allowed to advertise that their pills actually make people lose weight. Believe me, If a pill existed that could safely and effectively make you lose weight without any side effects or effort you wouldn't be hearing about it on an infomercial - it would be on every prime time national news program and the front page of every newspaper.
Sorry for the tangent.

There are such statistics that show the men to women ratio. But the numbers are kept "private" for several reasons. Unfortunately, as we can all tell, not many men actually utilize the Message Boards. Its nice to see more an more men chatting around here though.

Guys sometimes can be a little quiet here :)
Going slow but steadfy and generally in the right direction. Last couple of weeks have not been my best for dieting, but I am not gaining either.
I figure for the next month or so I am mostly trying not to GAIN versus losing weight, knowing that I expect to eat too much over a planned vacation and so I am considering how I will attack making up for that known lost ground time.
the biggest trick for me to remember to be a little more clever in planning my own meals on the week after vacation so I can be low calorie but high flavor. Re-designing my meals to be sensible in calories without feeling like I gave up anything has been my strategy for a 'fun' diet.
Portion control is my problem too. Hey, I'm 6'2" and think my portions should be big like me! (hehe)
Anyway, since I've joined SP, I've been counting calories. After 1 week, I've only been over the limit one day and not be much, so I guess this site works.
I've been exercising as much as possible.
Ever eat half or a whole bag of chips? Easy to do when you have salsa, or my favorite, queso!
Man, we guys are truly out numbered on this site. Oh well... could be worse. This site could have nothing but guys. (chuckle)

I reached my 1-yr anniversary with Spark people last week (changed screennames once along the way). What an incredible site this is. I used to be 225, but I have been between 180 and 185 since last September. I owe it to this site. It was slow - and I certainly had bad days, like that 5000-calorie birthday party day, and it's tough to stay under on your calories when you keep reaching into the beer cooler when you're at the lake - but I made it to my goal weight anyway!
Bottom line - you can do it too!
| I'm hangin' in there. Lost weight at a steady pace early, but I've definitely hit a plateau the last couple weeks. But I went out this morning and jogged for 40 minutes (at a pretty darn slow pace, but nevertheless, it was 40 minutes...). It reminded me how far I've come, because 2+ months ago, there's NO way I could have done that, regardless of whether I've lost weight or not.
