"I just got back on walking..."

Way to go, Dennis!

When I'm trying to keep at something, for some reason I find one of the dumb lines from "Animal House" to be inspiring: Jim Belushi screaming "It ain't over 'till we say it's over!"

My weight loss has followed a fairly consistent pattern over the last several years since my high. I will stay at the same weight for what seems like a really long time. Then I will have a little gain in weight followed by a pretty decent loss. Then it repeats. The plateaus are longer now I notice. They don't seem as frustrating to me now. I guess I just recognize them as being part of the pattern. I don't know if this is true for everyone or not.

Plateaus are bummers. One thing to consider though is that 15 pounds is a lot to loose in a month. SP aims for 1-2 lbs/week usually, so it is not surprising that your body is doing some other realignment. All the advice here is great. Just stick with it and remember that plateaus are not great plains but just table tops.

Congrats! I just got back on walking - after a forced two week layover. Doctor's orders and all. It is great to be doing something positive!

Thanks for the support. I am hip to what you are saying. I am in this for the long run. Obstacles only make us stronger. WE all have our crosses to bear, we all have our "good news", "bad news" stories, about how life can be so ironic... It is the best of times, it is the worst of times... or so someone said. I am in this for the long run... there is absolutely no going back. This is the last and final life change that I will make. I am the master of my fate!

Dennis,

Injury sucks! As you note, life *is* strange. I used to joke with my wife (seventeen years my junior), that I married her so I'd have a caretaker in my dotage (which she claims isn't that far off). Well lo and behold, she has a wreck after passing out at the wheel. After some medical shenanigans, the Docs figure out she has a rare heart condition that could well have killed her and she needs a defibrillator implanted. We figured this was tough luck, but she had the surgery and we were on with life. She goes back for a checkup a month or so later and the Cardiac Doc says "Hey, there's still something wrong." They give her a belated cardiac catheterization and she has a 90% blockage in the left main artery that can't be stented. Next day, she's in a hospital fifty miles from home awaiting open heart surgery at the ripe old age of forty one. Well long story short, less than five months after the surgery, she ran up the steps to the Jefferson Memorial yesterday morning and was hardly winded. Of course there's always a downside, even to a good story. Now she's on my ancient arse about going to the Doctor.

Hang it there buddy! Work the upper body and watch the diet, and you'll soon be back at it. Crutch races are next on the agenda!

Dennis.....right back at ya!

It is amazing how we ALL take things for granted. It can be something as simple as exercise like walking, taking the trash out, or something as complex as a relationship.

My wife and I were constantly upset with how much her mom would call and "bug" us. I'm sad to say she passed away at the age of 47 in December. It makes us think twice about "complaining" about things.

The fact is we all have different feeling about working out, and we all have different ways to get through it. The best thing i can say is to make sure you're comfortable with your choice. I can honestly say I don't regret anything in my life. All my experiences have made me who I am today. The main thing about that is my past makes me re-think many things before I take action.

SparkPeople has helped me with this aspect of my life. When Chris Downie founded this website he based it on his plan of setting goals. After setting the goals we use the different stages to achieve the goals. By my picture you can tell it halped in my weight and diet, but it did so much more you can't see in a picture.

Anyway, sorry to get all philosophical. Dennis just just brought up some good points. Thanks to all the guys around here that help keep us going!

Life sure is STRANGE. Here I am feeling sorry for myself because I have a problem with my hip that will not allow me to do any walking or strenght training and only a very limited amount of (easy) evercising at all. Before now, I was walkling for the first time in my life - up to 4 miles a day - working my way up to 5 miles when the wheels were taken right out from under me. I never thought I would enjoy those boring, long walks - until I started to feel healthy again, with more energy - and used the time to smell the roses and do some mild meditation. Then I went into strength exercises. Some of the exercises, I was only able to do 5 reps for one set, the first time exercising! Then I worked myself up to 20 reps for three sets - and felt very strong! I was building muscle, toning the rest, losing weight like never before, and feeling really great. Now I am depressed because I can not exercise - my gift has been taken away - for now. I too have hit a wall and have not lost any weight the past two weeks. However, I intend to fight with every fiber of my sould to get my hip back in shape and return to the path and the gym. I can not wait!!! STRANGE.

I get that feeling once in a while too. Some people need to just push through it and keep on going. I have found that when I lose ALL desire it's time to take a break or change things up. Usually I'll take 3-5 days off, then change the strength routine and it jump starts everything.

Rob is right. If you are just starting out and are exercising for the first time in a while, you could be putting on muscle - a very dense and heavy tissue!
Do not give up the ship! It will come in ... if it stays on course.
Hey, what a GREAT "before" picture. When you loose your 100 lbs it will be great to compare the "before" to the "after".

Hey, go to spark member GOLFPRO's Spark Page and see his before and after photos - he lost 80 lbs and what a difference!

Agree - hang in there for a few weeks before changing things up too much.

I like "hanging in" for about 3 weeks before changing what I am doing. Plateaus come and go - the alternative is much worse. (GAINING)

I hit a plateau after my first month and all I did was just stick with it. I did change my goals so my calorie range goes down as I lose weight but other than that I went 3 weeks one time without losing a pound and read a lot of articles on Spark to help me through it. After I got over it I have been losing 2 lbs. a week consistantly for the last couple month.

Which ever you want to do is good, they both work. Changing your goals is the part they may help you break your plateu

A couple questions. 1. Is it best to just reset your goals? 2. Is it best to go back to the fast start? 3. Or both?

Get a Tai Bo tape/DVD. God, I hate that man. I try to pass out so I can quit, but it just won't happen. He'll either kick start your weight loss or a heart attack. Merciless!

As mentioned before, it couldn't hurt to run the through the setup of SP again. Now that you've lost some weight your numbers may change a little. The other thing to try is mixing up your routine. A lot of people fall in to a routine that their body gets used to. Try exercising on different days, doing different exercises, or even changing your diet some. Eat more carbs and less protein, up your calories a litte one day, then drop them a little the next. Just mixing it up a little may help kick start your body again.

You should try counting your calories and set up another daily intake. Last time I reached I a plateau I change my excercise days, I increased my cardio time and added weight training one day a week with my cardio. The weekend also kill me, so I decided to have a cheat meal, and that is only on Sunday either lunch or dinner. I also have another 15 to lose but I have decided to lose an average of a pound a week so don't beat yourself up for that I know how hard is it when you see all this improvement and then is stop, I is always OK to slow down. If you lose 15 pounds in 15 weeks you will be ready for summer. Good Luck

I rocked for the first month or so on this program. I have lost 15 lbs and have held pretty steady, but I can not push through to lose more weight. I am still exercising ... actually putting in more time for the most part. I realistically have another 10 - 15 lbs that I could stand to lose. I have stayed pretty consistent with my nutrition. I do cheat occassionally on the weekend, but nothing over the top. Any suggestions for breaking through the plateau?

Thanks.
DK
