the thing about that story is that he keeps getting billed as "a former mets employee," with the implication that the mets employed a personal steroids supplier. the guy was a batboy for the mets, and in any case is not being accused of having distributed steroids during the time period in which he was employed by them. it just makes the mets look bad for no reason.

I think it'll end up being a race between Arod and Pujols for the #1 spot - I don't think A. Jones will make that much of a run.
I agree that Bonds wasn't the only one using. How many relief pitchers in the league are on something to help them pitch every day?
There is a story coming out about a clubhouse worker from the Mets who supplied tons of drugs to players from both leagues and numerous teams and he's cooperating with the Mitchell investigation. Should be interesting to see the names he names.

KINGWIER - I will be excited to see the record get broke by Bonds. I don't hate the man, the way I see things, it was steriod "era" for a reason, Bonds was hardly the only one using. I love the game of baseball, its my favorite of all sports but I just never got all worked up over 'performance enhancers'. I am surely happy that the MLB is trying to level the playing field and will be happy when steriods are irradicated, but I won't lament that they were part of the game.
Secondly, Bonds new record will not be standing for long, so I'll enjoy it for what it is, a hollow yet monumental achievement. Guys like Arod, Andruw Jones and Albert Pujols all will make a run at Bonds record and not one of them have had roids accusations swirling about them. Eventually the record will be held by a clean ballplayer.
In the end I'm just here to enjoy the sport, not curse it b/c of a man named Bonds.

Crazy4blues,
Not just because I am a natural rival of the Giants, but I'd rather see Bonds break Jim Rice's record for being beaned by pitchers in a season than watch him break Aaron's record. The guy is an embarrassment and he will not have got it the right way. Hank Aaron won't even go to the ball park to acknowledge him when he breaks his record.

| have to say, it was nice to sweep the cards (though they looked a lot better yesterday against pittsburgh - braden looper, of all people, pitched a nice game). but far more satisfying was watching jimmy rollins boot a ground ball yesterday AND ground into a double play after saying that the phillies were the team to beat in the NL east. man, if they are the team to beat, then this shouldn't be too hard, unless their starters pitch complete games every outing. their bullpen is terrible!

| Last years season of suffering for Cardinals fans--except for that quirky WS victory--seems to be carrying over to this year. Could they stink any worse against the Mets? At least the bats are coming alive and this pitching staff might be better than last year's. Free agency did a nice housecleaning job for the Cards. Maybe a Cubs fan can explain why the Cubs saw fit to reward Jason Marquis with a fat contract after he sucked so badly last season. Play ball!

Pitchers are looking great so far for the Sox... Papelbon looked like a man possesed last night. Papi finally got the bat going, now its Manram's turn.

WONG:
Well, as you probably know, I'm a Giants fan, and my initial reaction to the Zito deal was similar to yours. However, after thinking about it for awhile, I like the deal more and more:
1. The Giants lost their ACE (Schmidt). Zito, is, in fact, an ACE.
2. He was a very strong pitcher last year (no, not in the Cy Young running), but he was still very good in a superior league. The NL STILL has only two good teams: St Louis and Da Mets. So Zito won't have the same type of line ups to pitch to. So a very good pitcher in the AL becomes a GREAT pitcher in the NL.
3. He's only 28 years old. He's been good with a good team for so long, a lot of folks assume he's 37 or something.
4. The money really isn't an issue. The Giants have the '07 All Star game, so they'll be able to generate a lot of revenue for at leat one year.
5. Finally, Zito already lives in SF, so he wouldn't experience any culture shock. Frankly, an East Coast or midwest team wouldn't like him. As soon as he started having a slump they'd just say that it's because he's some New Age space cadet.
6. He'll be joining a stable of very good eperienced and younger arms. Matt Cain, IMHO, represents what Kerry Wood was supposed to have been. Also, Noah Lowery, while he may not be the next Tom Glavine, he is definitely on track to equal Kirt Reuter's very good record as a left for the Giants. Throw in Matt Morris and Russ Ortiz, and things could get good for the Giants.
So, to me, it looks good on paper. I'm willing to wait out a whole season before I really make up my mind on this one. I don't think that Zito really has anything to prove; he's already done that. If he continues to do what he did for the A's, the Giants will benefit.
The Giants STILL need somebody to protect Barry Bonds in the line up. Basically, they need Jeff Kent back. He's just that type of hitter.

I think that Johnson will help out our pitching rotation a lot, but I don't see how anyone should get paid those high prices. I am a teacher and see how that money could really be used to help better society. Kind of like Beckkham's $256 mil for playing soccer for LA. Oh well such is life I guess? That's right, J-E-T-S!
But now that all of the NY teams are out of football, it's what, 30 days till pitchers and catchers? Time to get out my Mets stuff. All the way this year...
|
|
|
|
| So the D-Backs get back Randy Johnson with his big price tag. Only have to have his physical and he is in. Not too sure if I want him here or not. We still owe him $40 million for when he was here before. Must be nice to get that type of money. I am a 5th grade teacher and could think of a lot of use for the $40 mil.
|
|
|
|
OK, can any SF Giants fan explain how we (the A's) managed to unload Zito on you guys for $126 million? Granted he was great in the Big 3 era (Hudson, Mulder, Zito) but he's been getting worse and worse for the past 2 years.
I can understand paying that much for say Santana, but Zito?? The mind boggles....

I was hoping he'd turn into that power bat but he had like no batting average to speak of. One day he'll figure out how to hit the ball and then we'll all be ticked off.
|
|
|
|
| My wife and I are big D-Back's fans and are not too sure about bring back Randy Johnson. He was fine when he was here, but that was before all of his surgeries. They have 72 hours to come up with a $ package to offer him. We already owe him a lot of money already. See what will happen.

RUSS: well, it's two months since your post, but I have to agree with you--and I'm a Giants fan! I really don't see the point of hiring w/in your own division. What is Bochy going to do for the Giants? It doesn't really matter, though. It's pretty clear that the Giants don't have any real intention of winning anything next year. Signing Barry again for $16,000,000.00 for 1 year just means that they want the "gate" in the run-up to Barry's breaking Aaron's record. Pretty cynical!
And the Dodgers getting Jason Schmidt? That's just painful. Makes me sick . . .

According the the Herald http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=171915
The Red Sox signed DiceK tonight for 6/52... seems crazy in this market. Also turns out they had some help from the Dragons (DiceK's Japanese team). Rumor has it that the Dragons would have sent him to the minors had he returned thus adding another year before he became a free agent (2009) thus killing all leverage Scott Boras would have had in negotiations.
Being from Boston I am a huge Pats fan... but Baseball is first in this city and this is as big as it gets for us this off season. We needed to sign this guy and we signed him for less and longer than most ever anticipated.
Oh yeh, I can finally rest now, I have done nothing but refresh Sonsofsamhorn over the last week for hours on end following this story.

Sara, I was all set to post again, but it was starting to sound like an echo chamber here!
I can't recall a more intense performance on the mound than that of Kenny Rogers; he was simply amazing. He would have beaten any team. And the pine tar or whatever it was? Come on! So what? At least he's cheating in the open and not in the locker room with a syringe . . .
So far, I really like the Series. But if the Cards are going to stay alive, they will need to keep hitting and hope that KR gets the flu or something. Also, Sara, I agree with you that when you go to St. Louis and see that sea of red shirts, it can be tough. It's a great baseball town. Also, I have all of those memories of Tony LaRussa's A's in the late 80s and early 90s. But, then again, I like Leyland, too. It's all very fun to watch, and if the Cards can keep hitting, it just might go seven games.
|
|
|
|
| Now the umps are calling that dirt. The brown patch has shown up a couple of times in the past but it's dirt. Really. Come on, can a guy name Kenny Rogers really lie to you? It probably won't show up again until game 5 or 6 anyway.
|
|
|
|
St. Louis is capable of amazing things, especially at home. Our fans are unbelievable. We have great pitching coming up and our rookie bullpen has surprised everyone. Our big hitters seem to have pulled out of their slumps. So, all that being said, I say bring it on! Even better than the split would have been to win last night. It was manageable since we were only 2 runs down and the bases were loaded. Joe Buck is a St. Louis guy of course and I always wonder how he manages to sound so neutral. It must be hard. Today's controversy is all the talk about Kenny Rogers having pine tar on his pitching hand last night.

And you men call yourself baseball fans?!! Where's all the talk about the World Series? I guess it will take a real fan, a woman at that, to revive the discussion. Anyone watching the Series? As I live in the St. Louis area I am, of course, a Cards fan. We made it through a tough series with the Mets but the best team prevailed. And I have to say we have looked pretty good in Detroit so far. Nothing too stellar last night (we are tied 1-1 in the Series for those of you living under a rock!)as we blew a bases-loaded 9th inning opportunity. Kenny Rogers pitched a great game, I must admit, but wow, what a jerk he is! Could hardly stand to watch him. Is anyone going to help me root for St. Louis? Can't wait for the 3 home games coming up.

Hey, all. I am a bit under the weather at the moment, so I basically watched 3 playoff games yesterday.
I tell you, it's just uncanny. My prejudices about the NL were really confirmed yesterday. The Yankees/Tigres game was fun to watch; it was well played, and it came down to just one run. (The A's and Twins, for that matter, are playing good baseball, too)
The two other NL games, however, were just kinda BLAH, especially the Padres/Cards game. And, Sorry, Russ and Mike--but for Jeff Kent, the Dodgers really aren't matching up to the Mets. They will have to really turn it around. Perhaps things will be different at Chavez Revine.
The big story today will be whether or not the A's can close the deal. If they don't win today, things could get very ugly. We shall see. At any rate, I expect a very good game . . .

You guys make a good point about ballpark food BTW. They hold you captive to the junk they sell and they don't have one healthy bite of food in the park. Even the peanuts are loaded with sodium and cost about two hundred calories per ounce, so a little goes a long way. The least they could do is come up with some celery and carrot packs and maybe some veggie wraps. I'd far sooner lay out five bucks for that than a hot dog made of pig noses and bull parts, topped with a couple grams of salt and wrapped in white flour. There's gotta be some better choices they can come up with.

Mike,
Are you talking about the Yankees getting rid of All-Star pitchers? Why? We draw fans, earn money and can afford pitchers. How 'bout the Cubs? They have more money than anybody and one of the worst teams in baseball, so it's not the money anyhow. Yeah, we have a couple big money pitchers, but how about Beam? *Wang*? Proctor? Veras? *Rivera*? Henn? Karstens? All these guys came from the farm... and that's just pitchers. Look at the rest of the team. (Think Jeter, Cano, Cabrerra and more.)
The Yankees probably bring up as many or more young players from their farm system than anybody in baseball. So tell me, why is that everybody wants the Yankees to give up their payed for ball players and everybody else gets to keep theirs? The Yankees or Boston come to Baltimore and the Orioles fill their stadium and they have a crappy team. Baltimore makes over $30 million last year and the Yankees lose the same amount. In the NL, the Cubs funnel all their money into all the real estate and media surrounding the Cubs and spend little on players. They're rich and do little to promote players, new or experienced.
So if you want to cap the Yankees, let's put a cellar on the hoarders that spend the bucks on everything but the team? Something is rotten in Denmark. It's just the "anybody but the Yankees" mentality and nothing else. Sour grapes.
BTW, the Yanks just clinched a tie for the East Division title. Win one more game and they clinch their ninth consecutive AL East Division title. Go Yankees!!

| How about getting rid of some of those "All Star" pitchers and bringing in some fresh talent? That will make my blood pressure go down.
