| Yup, Russ. That's just what I was thinking. In fact, I think Hoffman was up to all of the batters. Anyway, it WAS a good game. Very crisply played. It had a little of everything: hitting, fielding, and decent baserunning--for a change!

| I almost feel bad for Hoffman. He's usually nails in the clutch, but he left that pitch too high in the strike zone.

| Yep - AL, as expected. Game starts to late, it moved along well enough but even my 8 year old was out by the 3rd inning, my 5 year old didn't even make it through the 1st.

| Wow! This game was pretty boring until 2 outs in the ninth inning. Ozzie and his gang came through. You noticed, he didn't use any of his pitchers. That's because the White Sox play the Yankees Friday. Smart move.

| Again, the NL blows it. Turns it, it WAS Troy Glaus (wudda meathead!) the mopped up the floor with the other guys. Against Trevor Hoffman, second on the all-time saves list! Go figure! The NL hasn't won since '96--during the Clinton administration! Take about ancient history!!!

Yeah, I actually did watch most of the HR contest yesterday. What was amuzing to me was during the "pregame" discussions (nothing else on at the gym), it was all about Big Papi and Troy Claus and how they were going to mop up the floor with everyone else. Turns out it was David Wright, Ryan Howard, and Miguel Cabrera who hit more than those guys. Out of all of them, I liked Howard the most; he's just got one of those "poetic" left-handed swings (Reminds me a little of Will Clark--sorry, Jes; I know how Cubs fans feel about THAT name!).
Yeah, I think that Wright and Howard (and Cabrera for that matter) have the goods. The Game is in good hands. Still, I'll admit it, Big Papi is fun to watch!

love the 'designated hustler' it is very true having been around them and losing a couple of good friends to the stuff nothing good comes from juicing in the end i was never a big fan of Conseco and what about Sosa, Bonds the list is long okay you can add strength and power with out the stuff but the physiques these guys acquired in an almost over night time it is nearly impossible gentics arent that great in anyone
on a lighter note--- did anyone see the homerun contest? wow! some of those shots were pretty sweet

Jes, I think that MG was saying somewhat politely that "steroids happaned." If Canseco is 1/2-way credible, I believe that,yeah, he was responsible for introducing the juice in large part to the AL. If DH stands for "Designated Hustler," then I tend to agree with you!

| Who wants to see a pitcher stand in front of the plate where he is afraid of a pitched ball when you can have Thorne or Ortiz or Frank Thomas. Let's get some action. I went to the Dodger game last weekend and they lost 11-7. It was fun though because there were like 25 hits and several home runs. When it's 95 degrees at the park you want some action.

anyway the AL should take the all-star game. but as you have all said to shock there WHAT HAPPENED? well according to a couple of retired players (mark grace and al lieter) the DH happened a possible idea when you dont boggle the pitchers mind with them having to hit the game is different however i am a purest no dh is they way to go

| I think Boston can hold the lead until September at least, the Yankees need the break to rest their players, it's a long road back even from 2nd place.

I think the Twins started too late. They win 10 in a row and only gain 1 game on the top two contenders.
Should the Cubs fire their manager? They should fire the team. Can Boston hang on the the AL East? Not when they play the White Sox next.

Count me in. I'm a Giants fan, no matter what the "weather." I will always stick with the Orange and Black.
Having said that, the NL now officially sucks. What happened? I thought that w/ free agency, the newer hitter-friendly parks, and the mixing of umpires, the NL, with its traditional emphasis on "small-ball" fundamentals, would easily dominate the Junior Circuit for the next century. What happened?????

| We play the ChiSox again later this month. Looks like there will be a battle for the AL Central this year. The AL shouldn't have much trouble against the NL in the AS game this year.

We live dead in the middle of the state, so there are a lot of Phillie fans and a lot of Pirates fans, but none are both. I did declare a moratorium on hate day and rooted for the Steelers in the Super Bowl, since I had no horse in the race. I think that's the first time I ever rooted for Pittsburgh anything in my life.

And someone has to be a Pirate fan. There's only so many days you can give out Free iron City Beer to everyone for showing up.
It's great watch the rookies playing at this level. If they can keep them together and build around them (two thing LA's struggled with) they'll be a pretty solid team.

The first thing to do is to move away from the Cubs and join the White Sox bandwagon. We'll let you come in. Why does Milwaukee even have a major league team. It is a small market town. Didn't Hank Aaron play for them before they moved to Atlanta? That makes them a national league team. It could be worst. You could be a Pirate fan.
Now that Dennis is back from his golfing, how's your teams doing?
That Ortiz is unbelievable. The best clutch hitter in baseball. How come the Red Sox don't boo Martinez but boo Damon and Clements?

Any Jays fans?
I don't see too many here so maybe I'll start something. They've put together a good team, although they'll be missing the playoffs this year, but not by much. There is just too much competition for the Wild Card and the Jays just don't have that contender feel to them. They've only been able to go on a 3 game winning streak, no more (mind you they've never lost more than 3 in a row either).
Next year though I think they'll be in!

Hey, the White Sox just won on 1 hit. Thome's 24th homer. If the AL would have pitchers hit, Ozzie would have our pitchers break their wrist with a pitch ball.

National Leagues = minor leagues? All right Mike, put down the hippy lettuce and think for a minute. Any fan of baseball knows that the game is cyclical. One league gets dominant the other league of flounders for a few years. Yeah the AL is hot now but it won't take much (maybe a good smallball playing team with pitching) to beat those pitchers are too afraid to stand in the box, DH using, pansies in that other league.
Prediction: Shades of the late 80s. If Met pitching holds up through the season, they'll romp over anyone who comes out of that money pit you call the AL!

As long as they keep on winning, that's the main thing. I wish Detroit would lose once in a while. We have a sportswriter here in L.A. that blast all the players also. Since I live in L.A., I watch a lot of games on the computer (mlb.com). It's hard to watch the games without a couple beers. Next month, we're going to a Dodger game. | Anyone remember what the REd Sox gave up for David Ortiz? If I remember right, the Twinkies put him on waivers and we plucked him from the bowels of anonimity. Another fantastic move by the boy wonder, Theo Epstein!!! Unfortunately David Pauley pitched like John Wasdin in the second game yesterday so the lead on the Yanks is only one game.

And me without a working VCR. Sarloos was pitching a neat game until then for the A's. Thought it was funny that his buddies nicknamed him Houdini and then they had to explain to the kid who that was.

| Bravo Chris on your explanation. My boys at 17,14, and 11 basically say what you do. Fortunately we don't have anyone on the Sox yet, although Gabe Kapler wouldn't surprise me, so I don't have too much explaining to do to them. My 14 yr old is a ball player and pretty good. He sees what the effects are and hopefully won't ever go down that route.

| I have two sons I bring to Yankee games, it's sad to me that they ask questions about steroids - what they are, why guys take them, do you have to take them to be good. . . they are young but I tell them the truth - players who take drugs are scumbag cheaters. When they say why does it matter as long as my Team is winning I tell them it matters because it's about getting what you want, it's about getting what you work for - it's stealing, they take records and recognition from the people that really wrked hard fairly to get them.
