I live in South Central Pennsylvania and I was one of the biggest Brooklyn Dodger fans in the history of our neighborhood on Main Street.. me and my buddy next door. Then came the rumors and then the reality. I swore if those Bums left, I'd root for the hated Yankees just for spite (I was ten at the time). I didn't really start to root for the Yankees... yet. I half heartedly rooted for the new LA Dodgers for a few years and then lost interest in baseball altogether. When I was 21, I started tending bar in a sports bar where the owner became a kind of mentor to me. He rooted for the Phils and the Yankees. I've rooted for both teams ever since. Ten years ago, I met a girl who rooted for the Phils and the Yanks. She knew even more about baseball than I did. It was love at first sight. So for me, it's nobody *but* the Yankees, except the Phils of course. Yankees postponed and the Phils are ahead 3-1. Curse Walter O'Malley's greedy heart for robbing me of my beloved bums. Let's go Yankees!

I, my wife and oldest son, are TRULY Baseball fans. Having lived for years in the Los Angeles area, I grew up a Dodgers fan (actually was a fan before they moved to LA, but afterwards!). Moved to Missouri as a 10 year old and learned to tolerate the Cardinals - then moved back to the LA area. I have since married a lady who is/was a diehard Cardinals fan, so by absorbtion have learned to root for the Cards - especially since they have that Kansas City kid (Louis Pujols) doing so well for them.
Since then, I have lived in Houston and like the Cubs, you gotta love 'em even through all the bad years. First game I went to in Houston was against the Dodgers in 1978. Went to get tickets and asked how close I could get to the front row on the 3rd base side two days before the game. The ticket seller asked if 3 rows back was too far!
Shocked about our good luck, we went to the game to watch batting practice, etc., and were stunned there were so few people that the dome echoed! It was so empty, when my wife hollared, "Way to go, Okie!" to Bill Reynolds after a great play in the third, he looked over to see who was hollaring for the Dodgers.
While there, my oldest son took a picture he had taken with Tommy Lasorda the year before down to try for an autograph. Coach Lasorda, the Grand Poobah of Dodger baseball, gave him two autographs. One on the picture and another on a ball Coach Lasorda asked for from the dugout. Dad had almost always been a Dodger fan, but after that day, I was a DODGER FAN!
We've since moved to Kansas City and I am now a Royals fan, but really hurting. I try not to be too depressed when they lose or break another record for longest losing streak, but I've been forced to seek psychiatric help. My psychologist says I shouldn't take it so personally, after all, it isn't my fault when they lose.
My wife and I probably watch 400+ games a year, starting with Spring Training. Course, that also includes minor league (the T-Bone franchise is in Kansas City), college ball, high school and Little League. Even though our two son's are grown, we're still attracted to the "young" talent coming up - especially their enthusiasm!
On the other hand, I think I would root for the Russians over the Yankees!
Bob, the Baseball nut!

| I hope they don't follow the usual pattern. And start doing bad when a big name star goes down. I've started rooting for them again this year and I don't want it to be a losing season. Season's still young and only time will tell.

I think they also need a league minimum. I am a Braves fan, but what happened to the marlins is a crime. There are 3 Yankee players each with a higher payroll than the entire Marlins team. Yet they get the same amount of revenue sharing. There should be provisions on what the revenue sharing is spent on. Go Braves!
|
|
|
|
Revenue sharing would be a huge plus for baseball. I would think this could be pushed by congress too since baseball has it's special anti-trust proof status.
(And I come from a major market area too. Go RedSox!)

| was a sad day for this Canadian when the Expos moved to Washington. eventhough they're gone am gonna cheer for the Nationals as well as the Jays. be a hoot if they ever played each other for the world series.

It's lonely in KC. The Royals had the Yankees in the eighth, then our $250,000 couldn't get any of the $100 billion line-up out.
Am I whining, or does MLB need revenue sharing like the others?

| I tend to root for 3 teams ... the Tigers, who I grew up with and will always be my #1 team, the Reds, as I lived there and my brother used to be the chaplin for the Reds, and the White Sox, as I lived on the far south side of Chi-town for a bit and got to go watch several games. I was happy for my Chicago friends last year, and my Tigers are off to a roaring start this year.

Well, your Nats are doing better than my Phils! Hey, my Phillies and Yankees both finally won today! Hoping to find a bus trip to Philly when the Yanks are there for interleague play. Anyone know of any?
Missy
|
|
|
|
The Nats really need two more starters and a good middle reliever; they could use more hitting, and their fielding hasn't been up to Major League standards.
The manager, Frank Robinson, will probably get the kinks out of the fielding. But it still may be a tough season.

Hey Samsdad, you need more tha that to catch up with the Yankees, of course they aren't showing me much this year. I am not ashamed to be a Yankees or Phillies fan, have been all my life, but it is frustrating when the do so badly. We were just saying that with the Phillies, it is better if they don't do well early on, they always fall at the end, but if they do really bad now, maybe they will pick up in the second half. Am I over-reacting to the 0-4 record they have started off with, already talking about the second half when the first week isn't even over!

RSTINEJR Its not that I'm ashamed of being a ROCKIES fan, but that it's a little like rooting for the Cubs. Very frustrating! It is a fun stadium to go to and watch a game, and Denver is a great place to visit. I haven't given up on them, I just wish they would win more consistently. Go ROCKIES!!!
