What if I don't make my range of calories?

100 short won't really hurt you. Like someone else mentioned, if you're short one day it is often balanced out another day anyway. But 100 isn't that bad. 100 a day means 1 extra lb loss over a 5 week period.

I am about 100 calories short every day. I have started eating a snack about an hour before bed to get it up. If I don't have energy problems, and am not hungery is it bad to be 100 short?

A couple of points, as I was in the exact same boat.

1) Be sure that if you lose a big chunk of weight quickly, you go back and redo your diet goals. Set it back to 1-2 pounds per week and have it figure out when you'll reach your target weight. I just took mine down by a month and dropped 600 calories/day off of my target (went to 2 pounds per week).

2) Watch out for late night eating. I was genearlly 600-700 cal's short of my target, would sit down later at night htinking 'I need to eat more' and would eat another 2-300 calories. Not a great idea.

3) An ounce of peanuts (the unsalted planters dry roasted nuts) is 160 calories. I've found that to be a great 'calorie' filler. There are better nuts, but I don't like any of them.

I am trying to stay withing the calorie range and it seems to be working. The one thing that I am finding is that I am burning and doing more cardio minutes than what SP is telling me to do. Will this hurt my chances of losing weight?

SP is telling me to eat a minimum for 2600 calorie and burn 505 calories a day. I am eating my calories but have been burning 600 to 800 calories a day. I have been almost aditcted to excersise now and do it whenever I have free time.

I would think that SparkPeople would also adjust that range as you continue to lose weight.. so right now you might need 2600 calories, but if you lose 50 pounds then your range should go down...

Right?

Personally, I don't worry about a few low days in the week... I look at average over a span of time and aim to hit that (which is similar to the weight watchers method of saving calories for the weekend)...

not a bad problem to have, eh?

as for having enough calories to get through the day i think that might take a little time to judge and you'll just have to experiment with it. if you eat 2700 calories instead of 2600 that's not exactly the end of the world.

Good Luck!

Alright. I guess I will FORCE myself to eat more (Dripping with sarcasm). I was really afraid I wouldn't have enough calories left at the end of the day and have to starve myself until this morning.

i dont think a 2600 calorie goal can be sustained with an 1800 calorie intake. you might get away with it for a day or two but eventually your body will get annoyed and demand more calories and those are the days that will appear as 5000 calorie binge days. those binge days are not even the end of the world when you put it in perspective but we rarely do. we tend to view the binge as a "failure", get discouraged and follow up with a 7000 calorie binge day. these are the patterns that "traditional" diets will lead you into repeating. the reason the SP calorie totals might seem a bit high the first couple of days in is because they are realistic and will carry you through that whole year where we need to modify our behavior in order to lose that 100 pounds.

1800 can be bad. SP data is very accurate on computing your calorie range. You run a risk of actually not losing weight, or more importantly, losing the wrong kind of weight.

When we don't eat enough, our bodies go into "starvation mode". Basically, your body thinks you are starving yourself so your metabolism slows down and your body tries to store fat instead of using it. Well, your body needs to burn energy from somewhere, so now it starts burning muscle.

Obviously, losing weight by losing muscle is not desirable. You will definitely lose weight at first, but you will hit a plateau at some point because your body will resist.

If you're having problems getting enough calories you can find some simple ways to add small amounts of food with bigger calories. Cook with olive oil, eat some nuts, avacado, etc. You can easily add some good fat to your diet to add calories with out stuffing yourself full of food.

Good luck, it sounds like you're well on your way to a healthy new lifestyle.

According to my goal of losing 100 pounds over the next year I'm supposed to take in just over 2600 calories minimum. I just started this program yesterday and I didn't even come close. 1800 calories. Is this really bad for me to be this far off or is it great that I was 800 calories below my goal? I've heard anything below 1200 calories a day can be bad, but given my size and weight, is 1800 bad?
