I have a Concept2 Model D rower at home. I've been "erging" for just over a year. It replaced a Nordic-Track skier I could no longer use because of ankle surgery.

Hey all first people in "the Guys' Lounge"

I live only 8 miles from work so I tend to bike to and from. If its a nice day I will add a few miles to that. Then three times a week its the gym for the elliptical. I use to get winded after 30 min but finding myself getting closer to 60 now.

"I use seething indignation most of the day..."

I died laughing at that one. If it were true they'd have me in the hospital hooked up to a nutrient drip!

On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I walk for 45 minutes, 15 minutes a mile. I don't know if it's enough, but the weight is coming off a pound to three pounds a week, just like I've planned for, so I guess it's the right thing to do. Tuesday and Thursday, I do the strength exercises Spark sets up for me.

I just use a standard stationary bike myself. I try for 1-2 hours in 1-hour blocks per day, though there are two days off (Monday & Wednesday; full days of class). I can usually hold my HR at 160-170 for an hour, so I get a pretty good cardio workout out of it. Trying to vary it a bit now so that my body doesn't get used to the stationary bike, though.

The rec centers that I go to have 20 minute limits on the machines, so I end up doing a smorgasbord: erg machine, treadmill, elliptical, upright and recumbant stationary bikes, sometimes the stairmaster. Pretty much whatever is open when I need the minutes.

I used to think that the erg machine (rowing) was pure hell, but I'm developing a tolerance for it.

Tendonitis in the shoulder has taken me out of Tae Kwon Do, and calf problems limit my jogging to once a week. As they say, getting old is not for sissies.

Years ago I played raquetball; I'm thinking that I should pick it back up.

CJ....lol...combat golf could be fun!! But really, the course I work out has quite a few hills, and I walk extra fast carrying my bag. My heart does actually get high enough to count as cardio. I even wore my heart rate monitor last week to see how it went. Only burned about 700 calories in 100 minutes, but it was OK.

Just last week I marked the one year anniversary of purchasing my Precor Elliptical. I've averaged 4 times per week over the last year. I usually try to work at least 40 minutes. It is by far the most efficient exercise equipment I've used and it is easier on my joints. I also walk outside quite a bit - just something about outdoors that is good for me. The Precor was as expensive as a small country's gross national product but I'd buy one again.

It took me a little while to become accustomed to the elliptical machine. When I first started I thought 10 minutes was going to kill me.

I've been using the elliptical trainer 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes, I'm slowly making those sessions longer. I also love to play raquetball. So that gets me running around especially when I play with one of my friends because we are on the same level (skill wise). The best games are the competitive ones where neither of you is willing to give up the point even though you're about to fall out. :)

GP, what kind of "Combat" golf are you involved in that allows you to count it as cardio!! ;-D

CJ

During my runs around the neighborhood I do modified circuits ... the 1st quarter mile is a nice pace to get the THR up there. Once I'm in my range...every other light pole (2oo yards apart) I stop and knock out 10-15 reps of an exercise. Depending on the muscle groups for that day (mon-back,bis,shoulders,abs) (wed-chest,tris,abs) (Fri-legs,abs) so I do exercises that hit thoses groups... I keep this going for 2 miles...if I get tired of the exercise...I run faster through that scheduled stop to the next pole and continue. Its a nice shock therapy to break up the same'ol same :-D Give it a try.

My main cardio comes from Tae Kwon Do or running on the treadmill. During the Spring and Summer I add Mountain Biking, softball and racquetball. I would say golf, but that's not regular. Maybe 1-3 times a month at best.

my cardio consists of mostly the basics:
running
biking
elliptical
jump rope
tae kwon do
running stairs

nothing too exciting, but enough to be able to change it up and not get bored.

Gents

I'm full of questions today. I recently noticed that Ping Pong is "pre loaded" on the cardio section. Today I played in a local tournament for 60 minutes which was good for 300 calories.

Big cardio for me comes from hiking and mild rock climbing.

What is everyone else doing to get the big numbers? Anything unique you're doing that is good offers good cardio numbers? Fat camp? Rock Wall Climbing? marathon ? Golf without a cart?
