I literally cut my men's multivitamin in half because they are all 200%+ RDA for all nutrients and minerals. I'm using Wheatie's brand.
Now I know that I'm getting all of my vitamins and I'm doubling the time between purchases.

Taking too many vitamins definitely *can* hurt your health. I subscribe to Nutrition Action Healthletter http://www.cspinet.org/nah/ and they just had a feature article on multivitamins. They talk about some of the dangers of overdosing on particular vitamins and minerals, and they analyzed common brands of 1-a-day multivitamin to see which had the closest to the optimum amounts of key ingredients.
Some of the ones they picked out as best were Walgreens Ultra Choice Mature (whether you're mature or not), Eckerd Therapeutic M, Kroger Thera Plus, and Nature Made for Her 50+ .

| I take Sam's Complete Multi w/ lycopene. I wonder often if I should even be taking these because I TRY to eat 2 - 4 servings of fruits and 6 - 8 servings of vegetables per day. Also get my water, dairy, protein and fiber. I think most of the multi-vitamin is pissed away, literally. Sometimes my urine has a strong "vitamin" smell. Anyone else experience that?

I take the following:
- GNC Mega Man (2 per day) - Vitamin C, 500mg (2 per day) - Zinc, 30mg (1 per day)
I started taking the Zinc on a recommendation from my doctor, the last time I had flu symptoms last summer. He said it would improve my immune system and help fight against colds. He also said to make sure I don't take more than 100mg per day, because an overdose of Zinc has been known to cause liver problems. Since the GNC Mega Man already incorporates 25mg of Zinc per pill, I added the 30mg supplement to give me a total of 80mg of Zinc per day. I've never had any liver issues, and I haven't gotten so much as a sniffle since last summer.
And I definitely do notice an energy difference in the days I take the Mega Man pill as opposed to the days when I forget.

| As for diet pills, I agree with Golfpro. Any of the effective supplements I have seen on the market always seem to have nasty side effects, so I stay away from them no matter how good the pitch line is or who is pictured on the package.
|
|
|
|
| I also take a one-a-day men's vitamin. Through all of the things I have read I don't think I would be possible to OD on any one vitamin/mineral through a once daily tablet and a normal diet. But I also don't like taking things I don't need. My wife thinks I NEED the vitamin so it is better for me if I just take it.

Pastor,
Two ways...
1) set your viatmin up as a food. Enter in all the viatmins and minerals manually, then each day you take a vitamin select it as a food eaten. There obviously won't be any calories, protein, carbs, or fat, but you can select a bunch of the other stuff.
2) Go through the initial setup again (click on My Home, then Change Diet settings). Just over half way through the set up you can chooce to add all kinds of vitamins and nutrients to track. Select which ones you want to track and you can select them each day.

I can see by the posts that some are for and some against taking multivitamins. I suppose it's a personal issue.
For me, I take one - the Equate (Walmart brand) for men version. Not sure what the difference is because I've been taking it for over 2 years now.
I do have a question: How can I track nutrients in the vitamins using this site? I've posted this question in two other places - but when I found this message string, I knew you guys might have the best chance of reading and answering it.
Thanks in advance

Palot...unfortunately I'll have to say there's no such thing as a "safe" diet supplement. The ones that won't hardm you won't help you lose weight. The one's that help you lose weight often work by dehydrating your body.

Vitamins are things we usually get via food intake. The real issue is minerals.
Out plants grown from fields have deplenished most of the minerals. There was study done back in the 1940's that stated that all minerals have been depleted from our farm lands. I will try to find that article and place it on here.
Bottomline is that we probably need mineral supplments. Just not sure how much and how often.
This is a great topic. Hope it continues. I need to learn.

You have to really look at the generic multi-vitamins because most lack some of the essentials of a true nutritional supplement. The RDI was developed in the mid 1950's, and has NOT been updated since by the FDA because of their lack of intelligence . If you go to a N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy), they will evaluate you and direct on what is best becuase they know both kinds of medicine, traditional and alternative. You have to know what you eat in order to see what vitamins you are lacking in. Omega-3 Oils, Co-Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid (Antioxidant) Digestive Enzymes, and OPC (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins) have done it for me... lowered cholesterol/tryglycerides, increased energy and stamina and improved memory!!

Rockmonster, you're welcome! =) As for ther user name, well, it's literal, I'm a Golf Professional. It's a rough job, but someone has to do it, hehehehe. I love the game as well, been playing since I was 12. I would guess the NE winters don't allow for much on course time, lol. I've heard the indoor facilities are great when you live in inclimate areas.

| Thanks for the link Golfpro. What's up with the username? Golf is big for me. I live in NE so winters were tough but the last few years I've joined at an Indoor golf facility. It REALLY helps with the cabin fever! We have leagues and money games. Not much walking (LOL)and I've had to really watch out for the "refreshments".

For those concerned about getting "too many" vitamins check out this link:

Most people will never "overdose" on a vitamin. But this article does talk about what can happen with too little or too much of certain vitamins. I know for myself, I have felt the effects of too much vitamin c.

| Suppliments are essential for some people. MOST people, for example, don't get anywhere near enough B12. The RDA is really a joke. There are some serious diseases that can result from this deficiency. One can actually be a precurser to some nasty neurological problems. I was diagnosed with b12 problems. My memory was RAPIDLY going on vacation (I would forget where i was driving to on occasion) and my doctor had me in for CAT scans & MRI's to rule out strokes and brain tumors! Pretty freakin' scary! I also had tingling in my hands and legs that felt like my extremities had fallen asleep. Luckily the blood tests showed the B12 problem and I now take 8333% of the RDA. One hand is still semi-asleep and that may be permanent but I can deal with it. According to my Doc, MOST people DON'T get all the vitamins & minerals from thier diets anymore, ESPECIALLY when trying to diet and cut calories. Much of the vitamins are rendered useless by processing, heat, etc. Since starting a daily regiment of Vitamin C, Omega 3, 6, 9, - L-Lycine, COQ10 Enzyme, a high quality multi vitamin & mineral suppliment (with Zinc), lycopene, and my B12, I feel better physically than I have for years. I have gained 30 pounds in the last 5 months after quitting smoking but I can go longer on the treadmill than I have in years. And that was even BEFORE I quit smoking. I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all, really. But I just felt the need to tell my story. Those of you who say that suppliments aren't needed are probably right for many, maybe even most, of the guys here......but they can't hurt and they can REALLY help. By the way (and I'm probably jinxing myself big-time) I haven't had a cold or the "Flu" in two years! I used to have 2 or 3 colds a year at LEAST and I never seemed to escape the flu. I'm REALLY happy with that part of it. Sorry this is so long.......I hope everybody here has a GREAT deal of success in thier quest for weight loss. Take Care.

I am not a dietitian, but one that I spoke with recently told me that we only need to be concerned with taking too much of the "oil-based vitamins" - A and E are both oil based. You can actually get sick from too much of those, although she said you would have to go WAY over the RDA to do that, and it's nearly impossible to overdose, so to speak, on diet alone. It's also pretty difficult if you are taking a recommended amount of a multi-vitamin (ex: 1 pill/day).
There should be no fear in overdosing on the other, "water based" vitamins (C, Bs, etc.) because your body just excretes what it does not need.
We did not, however, talk about minerals (zinc, copper, iron, etc.).

I see some responses saying that "taking a multi-vitamin can't hurt so you might as well do it".
Is this really true? Can't it hurt? Can any registered nutritionists weigh in on the matter?
I mean, think about it, what if I take in too much copper? Don't you think there may be some negative long term side effects? Don't some of the minerals collect in your body rather than passing through like excess vitamin C does?
Also, some of the multi-vitamins I've seen contain more than 100% or the RDA for things like copper. That just plain scares me.
I try to stay away from supplements in general as much as possible.

| I haven't got to the point where I measure all the vitamins/minerals in my diet. I take a multi-vitamin everyday, along with a B-complex, E, some glucosamine, sometimes a C, and fish oil. I do this just in case I missed something in the diet...I can't see it doing any harm, and it may very well do good. Bottom line -- we should rely on our diet to provide most minerals/vitamins BUT who follows all the RDA's everyday??? A multivitamin isn't going to hurt. Also, it's better to take a multi-vitamin with no Iron. Chances are, we get enough iron from other sources.

| Your body will make the vitamin D it needs with just a few minutes' exposure to the sun each day (i.e. the normal amount you'd get even if you're not "trying" to exercise). So you'd only need to worry about that during the winter IF you live in a really cold area.
|
|
|
|
Yeah, that is a good article. Thanks.
Some of them give references (vit C says should be 60, too much at 8000 or something like that). This shows that it takes a lot of effort to get too much. Some just say 'too much isn't good', but doesn't say what too much is.
|
|
|
|
You probably won't harm yourself by going over the RDA. But it is possible to do some damage with too much. You should ask if there's any reason to exceed it by that much. My opinion...why put extra stuff in your body if you don't need it. Here's a good article about viamins, it does mention what too much of certain vitamins can do.

Ok, so I added all of the vitamins/minerals to my tracking. For the most part, my values are all over the table. Sometimes I have 3-4x's the RDA, others I don't get 1/2 of it. There are only a couple I didn't hit hardly any day - Vit. D and Selenium are 2.
Any thoughts? Should I be worried about this? Is 'averaging' the RDA ok? Or is it really important to not exceed the RDA by a certain amount?
I'm going to stop taking my multi-vitamin for a bit. I think I'll watch this for a little while and see how it goes. Then I'll figure out what to do.

I agree with Golfpro. Most of the newer "healthy" dry cereals have most of the vitamins necessary. This, along with the proper amount of fruit and vegetables, tend to provide all of the vitamins you'll need. Of course, you can track all of this on your meal tracker.
I do occasionally use Metamucil Capsules to compensate for low fiber days, especially when I'm travelling on business.

| The sugestion is to avoid vitamins if you don't "need" them. For example, if i eat a bowl of Total cereal, I definitely don't take a vitamin. Total has like 100% of most vitamins. It won't hurt to take it, by why take it if your body doesn't need it.
|

Yeah, I'm on the walmart men's one-a-day.
I haven't really looked at it, but wondered now that I'm getting more minerals and vitamins by eating right if I should still be taking the supplement or not.

| My main supplement is Centrum Performance; I do a lot of exercise so I figure that it's worth it. I take a Nature Made calcium supplement when I see that I'm below 100% RDI on my food tracker as well, and I also take a fiber Choice fiber supplement if I see that I'm below 25g of fiber on my food tracker. Sometimes I take a Nature Made Omega-3 Fish Oil supplement if I notice that I'm low on fats, but I doubt that it makes that much of a difference.
