I have also seen a few different variations, both in English and German. I guess the point is the same either way.
I hope your son enjoys his summer, no matter where it is. I hope you and your wife handle it well too. I know that my wife is fearing the empty nest, and we still have a few years to go.

I have a 19-year-old daughter who is away at college and an almost-18-year-old son who is raring to leave home. A few days ago he told his mom and me that his best friend is moving to San Diego and my son plans to spend at least the summer with him.
I'm not 100% thrilled and my wife is taking it harder than me, but if he manages not to get himself killed it could be a great experience for him.

| Hey BIGYN, As I was reading through I noticed your dogs. I'm kind of a dog guy myself. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are beautiful. I have a Kuvasz. She's beautiful and loving, and still very protective, but getting old. I'm afraid my wife won't agree to another dog for a long while.

I have a 16 y/o Daughter and a just turned 13 y/o son. My daughter just got her drivers license, I still stress about her driving. My son just turned 13 and I swear every day I find pieces of his brain laying on the floor. It's like he forgot everything he's learned in the past.
But really, both are great kids, they do great in school, athletics and church. I truly have been blessed.

Hi dads!
I have a son, 12 years old. I was awarded sole custody of him when he as 18 months old.
I got remarried 3 years ago (has it been that long already?), and I thank GOD that my son and my wife have bonded so well. And my wife has helped me whip the ex into shape a bit; she now has him half the time, which is good for her and good for him, and good for us too.
Being a dad is, hands down, the most important thing I've ever done. It's why I've done everything else, really.

We have a pretty well established soccer group at work. There's also a ball class at lunchtime 2 days a week, but I haven't really gotten into that.
I bought a pedometer ($15 at Eckerds/CVS) and I walk about half a mile at my morning and afternoon breaks.

I have a son, now 12 years old.
He was 18 months old when his mom decided/discovered she was a lesbian and we split up. I was awarded sole custody by the judge at that time, not because she was gay, but because she didn't bother to take any of the court-ordered divorce resolution courses, or even show up at the hearing, for that matter.
For the next 5 years or so, she had him 2 weekends a month. I never went after her for child support until she moved to Tampa a couple years ago.
Now it's nearly a decade down the road, and things are much better. I remarried about 3 years ago, and my wife helps me keep the ex from walking all over me. The ex has settled down considerably too, and quit smoking pot about a year and a half ago, has done a great job fixing up her house and now has our boy half the time, which is great.
Being a dad has been an awesome spiritual experience. I'm reminded of the expression: "Suffering is inevitable: growth is optional".
I'm looking forward to getting Rboy involved on the Sparkpeople program too.

So how do you fit doing your exercise in with the demands on your time from the kids?
I've found that after bedtime for the kids is really the only time for me to do it in the evenings. I've started playing basketball a couple of times a week at 6am, which is good. I always take time to play with the kids outside (tag, soccer, etc) to get cardio in.

My son is 20 now (we have only 1 child) and a sophomore in college. I was very active in his life as was his mother. Baseball coach, scoutmaster if he was involved I was also until he got to his middle teens then he wanted less and less to do with his old man and mother.
That's okay and I understood where he was coming from.
Spend as much time with them as you can. It goes by way too fast. One day you're changing dirty diapers and the next he's graduating from high school.

I have a 13 year old son...high functioning autistic and hes truly amazing... very academically gifted...but lacks the social skills of the "typical" 13 year old. Which I/we have no problems with :-D he hasnt developed the ability or desire to tell a lie!, steal, try sneaky crapp that the "typical" teen try on occasion. Hyperlexic is his specific "lable" they gave him. Meaning the accute ability to read, write and procees complicated probles at a very early age. He was crawling at 6 months, walking at 8! we knew we had an amazing child then but never realized how gifted he would become. Reads at college level...comprehension lacks some what. His constant joy for life just lightens the room when he comes in :-D truly our little gift. His big sis loves him too... a bit of jealousy early on when she was struggling with school a little, Ryan would finish up homework in a quarter of the time it would take her and usually get the better grade as well. Shes more focussed and both are on the Honor roll too !! Life is good... take care all. CJ

My son, wholives locally is dieting with mom and I and I have made him aware of the site, but he says he'stoo busy to check it out. I told both he and my wife but great motivations are out here but neither seems to want to look over the site and use it. We do support each other and we are all continuing to lose weight.

I hear you. My daughter is 28 and my sons are 24 and 25, but I have nine grandkids. I enjoy visiting with them, but other than the one who lives a few blocks away, I'm glad that I'm able to home. Of course that means across the country as 8 of the 9 live over 1800 miles away and I see them only a few times each year. This works out okay because my wife and I don't agree with the way way the two children and their spouses run their lives or raise their children. But then I don't think my parents liked the way I raised my kids either.
My local grandson lives so close that we are almost seragate parents. He lives with our son, his dad, who has total custody and often asks us for suggestions and assistance. My wife loves the chance to help him raise Dakota. AN d we love having him over every day and a couple nights each week.

My SIL has one and has lost another. They've gone through that a lot as well. It's a hard thing, and I don't claim to understand all of how it impacted my wife when we were basically ready to stop trying. A very personal decision between husband and wife, that's all I know.
Many of The group of dad's I hang out with online have gone through that struggle as well.

I've got one, beautiful girl, 9 years. She's been great since I started on spark. She "helps" me work out, takes me on walks and bike rides and always reminds me that I shouldn't be eating that.
I would love to have had the chance for more, but for medical reasons we cannot. So we love the one we have all that much more.

| I have 3 of my own plus a stepson. They range from 28 down to 21. I am having tons of fun with the grandkids. My oldest granddaughter might as well be mine as close as we are. It is nice though to have the fune with them without having to be the disciplinarian all the time. I let their Mommy be the bad one and they love their PaPa because of it. Am I bad or what?

Well.... my daughter for obvious reasons will never leave home. Biggest change not mentioning those folk who go overboard and try producing a basket ball squad all at once, is the basics of the two become three, it the realisation of having this extra person whatever to care for, protect. That doesnt stop no matter what age they are. In the end you do give up a certain amount of freedom in the sense you cant just drop things and do as you used to please. You are a family unit, for me anyway the level of comittment, worry and the need to protect mother and daughter all rose in equal measure. I strive to do the best that I can, knowing that helps to ease some of the other stuff. Its hard to say in full, I have my freedom of the bike, fishing. But dont come between me and my family, a papa bear ain't got nothing on me.
|
|
|
|
| The biggest change in my life was when they grew up and moved out on their own. Not trying to be crude, but it's true. My mom always said life begins at 40, and I finally realized what that meant.
|
|
|
|
| Question to all... what's been/was the biggest change you've made in your life since having kids?
|
|
|
|
| Kids are great motivation to improve your health. I just have one now but hope to have more. I want to be able to give the future ones just as much energy and play time as I give the first, so staying in shape for them is important. Kind of makes it more motivating when it's not just for you.

Hi.. My wife and I just found out that we're going to be parents about a month ago. We were already working on weight loss together (we'd met in a "pay" site diet chatroom six years ago) but we both managed to gain most of it back...
Now that I'm facing the prospect of being a father, the whole weight loss thing has taken on a new meaning for me...
I want to be active enough to play with my child and be smart enough to give my child a healthy role model not just through words, but also through my actions...

Hello Gentlemen!
I am the proud father of a beautiful 6 year old daughter. She is very active and for that I am thankful. She enjoys the Disney Channel on occasion, but only if there is no option to go outside and play due to weather. Since I am in Georgia, weather is rarely a problem, even in the winter. She is currently involved in Gymnastics.
My wife and daughter are a big source of my motivation to take better care of myself.

echo... echo... echo
Big - offshore... in the oil business?
I work on little bits of extra exercise instead of taking a 1.5 hr chunk. I take my kids to the playground and play tag with them for a while, then I'll walk around the playground for 10-15 minutes while they play together. My wife and I will work out for 30-40 minutes after the kids go to bed doing the strength workouts on here. No, they're not intense strength workouts, but they're better than nothing, and as I've never really done strength workouts for any extended period, it's a great starting place.
I find trying to involve the kids in it has been a blast. My son and I rode 2 miles to the local drugstore the other night. That was a blast, just t he 2 of us.

Re: workout timing and finding time. For me, it's abotu MAKING time. fotrunately, my wife agrees and supports me being healthier. I was doing very well with working out before work every day. 1.5 hours with cardio and circuit work. Then came the holidays.
What I've been doing recently is 35:00 Cardio in the morning before work, eating at my desk, then 35:00 cardio after work before picking Sam up at Daycare. I'm fortunate to have a decent exercise room at work with showers. Then M/W/Sa my Brother in Law and I lift weights at my house.
It works out pretty well because I don't have to get up as early (5:30a now as opposed to 4:45a before) and when My BIL comes he brings his boy so Sam and Arthur can play.
We'll see how this changes when Jack is born (March 18th)

| bgibson - what I do is go to work 30 mins early, leave work 30 mins early and hit the gym on the way home (doing 30 mins cardio and a very fast 30-40 min total body workout). This seems to minimize the impact on home life the most. I get home only a little bit later than normal, and am not quite so tired as from getting up at 5 am to work out before work.

Roady- Yep what makes the wife special is that she has her own probs, requiring treatment, I work away from home for the month then back a month, but not once has she asked me to come ashore. Daughter is a handfull at times but as you say special.
|
|
|
|
Yeah, definitely. No real suggestion, other than that I have made it a priority in my life to get to the gym daily, and I have a wife who supports that. She knows it's just something I do, and doesn't begrudge me the time I ask her to take Buddy-Boo, even though she has him all day, every day.
Personally, I find it easiest to go in the morning. He's usually waking up for a feeding in the 4-5 AM range, and I go to the gym at 6, get it over with for the day, shower, and head to work. Home by 5:30 or 6, and that leaves about 45 minutes to myself every night...

Hey Roadmoyer...though I'd join in here at the new digs. Greetings other Dads, I have a 5 yr old son and a almost 2 yr old daughter.
I self destructed this past weekend with SuperBowl festivities. Both Sat and Sun were eating and drinking extravaganzas, and Monday I did not feel good at all. I likely didn't eat too badly, but decided to not track that day either. 2 lbs came back. Crap.
At least today I got back on track, ate well and hit the gym. I feel so much better. It makes a difference. I don't have any foreseeable reasons to drop the ball again for a while, so hopefully this is a good phase for me.

Sounds like you have a special girl there Big... and I imagine that means you and your wife are pretty special too.
They are a handful, that's why I work!! Seriously, though, my wife is amazing, staying at home with them. next year they start Kindergarten. That'll give her some free time. I don't get nearly as much time as I'd like... a few hours each night before bed and weekends.

I have a step daughter, older than the others here (25), she is handicapped, known her since she was 5 years old, when me and my wife got together, she is an eternal child, that we love to bits, due to other factors we took the decision not to have any between us, no regrets thou. Replaced chidren with dogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, two at the moment, one in particular is as demanding as a baby. Quads that is amazing, must be quite a handfull.

Yeah... the kids are probably one of the biggest reason I'm doing this. It requires me to be more active, which in general gets me in more with the kids. Of course, one of them popping my swiss ball didn't help!! They love walking on the treadmill on slow speed too.
I've played more with them day to day in active things (tag, walks, bike rides, etc) than I probably ever have. Trying to make lots of memories ;)
