So that is what I smelled. First couple days at this new gym, I would tell you that I thought they cleaned the equipment with an amonia based cleaner. LOL now it comes to light.

thanks.

I posted this at the bottom of the thread, but here it is again. This has an in depth explanation of what's going on. I'm not an "Expert", but this is the same link they post for people who ask this question:

What is the Smell

I'm no expert, but I was told that when you start sweating after starting a healthy diet & getting your required water, that the smell is your body releasing the toxins it has stored not only in the fat, but in the muscle, through the sweat glands. I am going to try to bump this up so maybe a resident expert will respond. They are so great, I have been wondering why they haven't responded before now. Keep it up. It is only good for you. (He-He, but maybe not the person next to you). Don't know if you're aware or not, but all "deodorants" are not the same. Some are just "deodorant", some are just "anti-perspirant", then there are the ones that contain both the "deodorant" & the "anti-perspirant". Then there are the "anti-perspirant/ deodorizing" body washes for men that help with the entire body odor caused by sweating all over. An anti-perspirant/ deodorant combination that is used only under your arms, will not help the rest of the body. One of my "rule of thumbs" is to NOT wear any anti-perspirant or deodorants while exercising at home or when I won't be around anyone else, because I WANT the toxins to be released from my body. Keep it up. What have we got to lose . . . FAT!

thanks man! You too... I hope you do well on your program. I have lost 5 pounds in the last month and a half -- not stellar performance but not that bad either.

You're absolutely correct. Everyone is different and reacts differently to different things. (Anyone got a thesaurus?) I was simply relating what was told to me............And what my experience had been. Have a good one.

and incidentally...some of the 'bran' cereals have the exact same ingredient as metamucil (psyllium husk) so if you are sensitive to metamucil, you may also be sensitive to some cereals.

Metamucil may be one of the worst products ever made....according to the doctor that provided me with my lovely emergency colonoscopy. According to him, it is simply a BULK laxative. It adds BULK into your intestines. If you have ANY situation or ailment that may be inclined to cause constipation, you can have some real problems when there is too much fecal matter in your gut. It is also addictive. He suggested fruit, and some of the (Bleah!!!) bran cereals. I've had digestive problems for years and the Metamucel was actually prescribed by an ER doctor. It worked ok for a while but my stomach pain got progressively worse over a period of months until my doctor wanted me in the hospital. I now drink plenty of liquids, do some treadmill work nearly every day, and eat more fruit and vegatables. I've had no digestive problems to speak of for nearly a year. I DO have a 55 gallon drum of Metamucil in the cupboard over my sink!!

I find that getting ready for a soccer game works great as a laxative. Must be something about preparing for combat or something.

ha ha ha! That's funny! I've used it for a few months and haven't had any problems with it...I just find things a little smoother. Enough said.

believe it or not, metamucil is a GREAT way to get fibre into your diet.

I haven't had the ammonia problem but have had others. The doubling of my fiber intake has done some remarkable things to my digestive process.

Quite facinated !

I've smelt ammonia after a workout too...but I was taking l-glutamine which causes your body to excrete more ammonia. I smelled it on my clothes and whew! it was strong.

I'm glad someone asked this. I notice the smell in the shower after a hard sweat working out. I drink 72+ oz of water a day, but I still smell it. I know the smell but can't put my finger on it (not normal BO), I was thinking like ammonia.

:-D I thought this was gonna be a "Pull my finger" joke or something. Hahaha

I drink 2 gallons of water throughout the day and have never wondered about a smell... well not like the way you are wondering!! haha I've chased a few people off the treadmill at the gym before but that was bio hazard warfare from over indulging on mexican food. I hate it when that happens!!

Whats that smell!!

Chris...lol....I agree! When I first saw the topic I figured it was going to be something humorous seeing as how we're in the "Guy's Lounge". Fortunately this is a rather common question around SP so I know other people have had the same thoughts.

If there is ever a "Hall of Fame" for funniest thread topics, this one must be a top 10. I know the topic is serious, but the delivery was classic!!

Interesting that it's tied into hydration - this is likely due to working out early in the morning before drinking water.

You know, I used to notice that too for my first 2-3 weeks of "hardcore" exercising, but it seems to have gone away. Maybe I just notice it less now. But anyway, since you made me more curious about it, I just did a little bit of research on it, and here's what I found:

http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/30841

Scroll down to the bottom of that page, the explanation provided by "strawberryviagra" is fascinating. Here's a portion of it:

"If you are not getting adequate fluid, then the solution (ammonia + water) will not be diluted. Therefore, water plays a definite role. If you are not drinking enough fluids to have at least one or two clear urinations every day, you should drink more.

Based on this explanation, it is clear that your sweat will smell like ammonia only if an excessive amount of amino acids are being used for energy, or you are not receiving adequate water. This helps us find a solution to the problem."

I don't know if anyone else experiences this but after a hard workout there is a distinct odor and it's definitely not of the underarm variety.

I sweat alot through my head and at first I thought it was just residual shampoo smell but having used different shampoos the smell is the same so I'm guessing that's not it. Then I wondered if it's from what I eat but again, that changes daily so that can't be it. The odor continues even while showering afterwards but disipates over say a half hour.

It's kind of acidic (?) - I'm totally perplexed - anyone else have any ideas????
