I was heading for a pre 30yr old heart attack.
Cholestorol of 9.7, heavy smoker, was just all bad.

January 2nd 2006, I quit smoking... I discovered I had heaps more energy... so I started walking.. then I got serious and started dieting... riding 6 days a week.

I've now lost 11kgs (24lbs???) since Febuary.

I decided I needed to lose weight because I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stomach problems, sleep apnea and the topper was I started to have symptoms of diabetes. I've decided its time to change. I'm going to the doctor in a couple of weeks and I don't want to hear him say I am headed for diabetes.

The big thing for me was hearing that my father had lost so much weight that I came close to weighing more than he did ( he went from 295 -204 last I heard) so I figured it was about time to put some more distance between us. I was also losing sight of my feet

A few things --

* My pants were starting to get tight...AGAIN.
* I wanted to start competing again -- in something and have always enjoyed running. However, I knew I was too heavy to really start training very hard. So I used an elliptical religiously for a month to lose a few pounds before starting my training.
* Wanted to look better and feel better.

I left high school at 160, college at 180, and then my wife had a baby, and i went to 215, then another baby and 225...good thing I got on the "V-bus"...no more kids, no more gain. I've done this for two reasons, the first to support my wife, and the second as a challenge. Oh, and forty is creeping up on me. Good luck to everyone.

Hmmm thats a hard question... so many contributors... but the one that stood out over the rest was...

Being able to see my Butt from the front!!!

Haha... but alot to do with just being fit and healthy like the Army days...I want to be able to run and chase my kids around before they are grown and wanting less to do with their "old man" that will be a truly rough obstacle... but we're not there yet!! All the best guys!!

Congratulations on quitting smoking. I smoked for twenty years and quit cold-turkey with a couple of relapses. Smoke free now for 6 years. I also gained the weight but wasn't concerned with my diet or exercising at the time. You are one step ahead by being a part of SP during this process. You can do it and I will keep you in my prayers.

It's been a long journey but it started when I realized I was "fat and unhealthy". I weighed 240 and thought I was having a heart attack. Turns out it was stress. Started walking, joined WW w/ wife and dropped 50 pounds to 190. Started jogging and am now addicted (ran my first marathon this Feb) but my weight crept back up to 210. I saw a picture of me during the marathon and the gut I have disgusted me! I want to get rid of that gut and vastly improve my endurance run times. I want to like seeing what I see when I see pictures of myself i.e. no gut!

I'm quite new to Spark and just getting acquainted.

I smoked for 40+ years but have now been Quit for 18 Months. Best thing I could have done for my health!! I used the patch, zyban and quitnet.com. Its been a lifesaver for me.

Now I need to get rid of some of this weight. I was heavy before I Quit smoking, but gained another 20 lbs. in the process. This looks like a great support site and I'm hoping to use this and some of the committment & determination I learned to help me loose weight.

Amen Brother! You should try it at 50. I've lost 17 pounds in the past month but it is slowing down a little now. I do 30 minutes every day on the Air Walker and religiously follow the calorie guidelines. I'd like it to be faster but I guess I'm on track so far.

When I left high school, I was 165. Leaving college, I was 190, and in great shape as a 4-year varsity rower. I coached for two years, and managed to stay in good shape. I couldn't afford to eat a lot, and had lots of time to work out - plus I was surrounded by fit people, and my boss was a fitness nut. I moved home for 5 months though, and put on 40 lbs. When I went to put on my favorite jeans, I couldn't button them. Not just tight, but no way no how was the button going to even approach the buttonhole.

I'd like to get healthy again. I think it's going to be easier at 25 to lose the weight than at 45.

It took 9 months. I followed the SP guidelines very strictly for every day of those 9 months. I didn't use their recommended menus, but I followed the exercise, calories, carbs, protein, and fat religiously. When I started SP my goal was to lose 65 lbs in one year. I ended up losing 85+ lbs in 9 months.

My doctor told me I'm definitely carrying too much weigh... gotta make a lifestyle change to take the weight off and KEEP IT OFF. Plus, ever since high school, I've always been overweight. I don't know what it's like to be slim or slender as an adult, and I'd like to see that. Also, I'm getting married next June and I'd like to be a little slimmer for my bride-to-be.

Waterdog, I tell you THAT story sounds familar. I moved from a rather non-hilly area of the country to Northern Minnesota where EVERYTHING is hills. Within 6 months of the constant up and down stairs and up and down hills I have some sort of protuberance on my heel that is very annoying. The 17 or so pounds that I have lost has eased the ache there some. Looking forward to reading many more of your day to day adventures! Keep us posted.

I remember when I first went to size 40 jeans and had a meltdown and refused to try them on. Now I am in 46 and they were starting to get tight! I went walking about 2 months ago and my weight caused me to get a heel spur. That plus huffing anf puffing when I played with my grandkids was an awful feeling. So now I'm down 15 pounds and still going. I still have to make myself exercise but the calorie counting and meal planning has been pretty easy so far.

Heath would also be another issue. Getting tired of being heavy and ignoring the aches and pains that come along with it just got old.

Hello,

Just signed up about a week ago and began the plan yesterday.

The single biggest reason that has gotten me to this point was not being able to fit into my big jeans. There is no way I am going up another size.

Out of high school and college my weight was a solid 240 pounds. I was a football player(running back) and had less 10% body fat. Got injured stopped being active due to being unable to do anything for about a year, met my future wife, fell in love and got comfortable doing nothing.

Secondly, my family has various aliements all relating back to high blood pressure. Mine is fine right now, but I want to get it under control before it is too late.

Currently at 300 lbs and attempting to be 250 by July 30. Will attempt to keep you guys updated on my progress.

The main reason to loose weight for me is to become healthier. My life was miserable and now that I have lost some weight I went back to school, have more energy and cant wait for spring to get outside and work in my yard.

I have a long way to go but there is no doubt in my mind I will attain my goal.

I grew tired of having extra weight up on my chest. I have always had very strong legs and stomach, but even though I had muscle on my upper body, it was overshadowed by fat. I left high school at 168, I left college at 185 and was heaviest at 205. I am not back to 184 and LOVE IT!!! Coupled with high cholesterol, I decided to Eat to Live, not Live to Eat! I was eating only foods that I enjoyed and many were not healthy. I was drinking 1-3 drinks a night. Since I started on this journey, I have been feeling 200% better! Now if only healthy foods were as cheap as crappy foods!

Fabulous! The first step of ANY journey is the first step(grin). I have to confess, my own reasons are multi faceted. I am in love with a marvelous woman who has steadfastly believed in me all along. She has encouraged me to do it because of my health. Various joints are starting to ache from carrying the excess weight. I really really want to be able to see my feet again before I die. I want to offer my beloved a better looking man(namely me in a year or so). My blood pressure and blood sugar have been creeping up over the years, along with the weight. And finally, I want to get into the same shape I USED to be in. I have an ambition of entering a powerlifting contest in a year or two at a certain weight class. And finally, as an RN of 6 years, I began feeling like a supreme hypocrite advising my patients on health, diet and wellness when you could balance a drink glass on my belly(blush). Perhaps a bit of all these. But ultimately I think my daughter cinched it when she asked me to introduce her to the svelte, muscular young man she saw in a photo, sitting on his Harley. When I told her that it was her own dad as a young man her response was "No, seriously daddy, can you introduce us?"......

I'd been wanting to lose weight for most of my life. About two years ago I actually managed to go from 340 to 196, and it felt really good. I felt better physically and I felt better about myself mentally...plus it was really nice to buy all new clothes that looked good on me instead of just looking for the biggest tarp of a shirt to wear.
Then I started slacking off and got back into my old bad habits and I gained almost all the weight back.
Then I got married and realized I needed to make something out of my life and get an actual career and since college wasn't working out (since I messed up my ability to get financial aid and couldn't afford to go without it) and since I can't stand the idea of working retail all my life, I decided my best bet was the military. So my current (and hopefully last) weight loss venture is in order to meet the physical requirements for enlistment...that and I would like to feel the way I did when I was in better shape.

Yeah, my motivation is vanity, too. And seeing more than half of uncles, aunts cousins struggle with weight / obesity for their entire life. I don't want to become like that, most of them have given up trying to change their life style while still having food, diet and guilty feelings on their mind all the time.

I've been overweight since I first started thinking about weight, I guess. For about a year, I was at a much healthier 95kg some 3 years ago. But somehow let it slip back up to 112kg, that's bordering on obese. (See the "relationship roller coaster" thread elsewhere in the guy forum).

Now I want to prove to myself that I can manage my weight. Or, more boldly, that I can take my destiny into my own hands.

Stumbling upon SparkPeople and the Hacker's Diet (go google it!) at roughly the same time gave me the last bit of motivation to start NOW and not someday soon.

PS: Cheers to Dr.Banger, Chris.Smith, Tecova, GolfPro and everybody else who's sharing opinions on these boards :-)

I didn't have any problem getting in my calories today. We went to a buffet style resturant for lunch. Even though I was tempted by many of the fried and other high fat foods, I had a large salad and several other healthier food choices. Still it all adds up and I went over my range by about 200 for the day. I'll just have to do a few more exercises the rest of the week to make up for it.

Yeah, I've gone through that calculator deal about 5 times trying to make sure it's getting everything right. What I've been able to figure out is that it's based on my weight, my exercise, and my goal of 1-2 lbs/wk. I read on here somewhere that it's 3500 calories to lose 1 lb of fat, and that you burn on average 10 times your weight in calories from normal day-to-day activity. So at 300 lbs, I burn 3000 calories/day just doing nothing. If I eat 2700 calories/day, that's 300/day more I burn than I take in, or 2100/wk. Add in the 1700 calories of cardio/week, and I should be losing just over a pound a week.

Of course, as I said, I have had a lot of trouble taking in my calories. So I eat somewhere between 2100 and 2500 calories on most days, and have lost 20 pounds to date.

My wife is at 1600 calories per day and hates it when at 7 at night, after eating well all day, I say 'dang, I still have 1000 calories left to eat!'

I have also quit drinking pop. My wife and I challenged each other, she drinks diet I go for the hard stuff, usually Mountain Dew.

The last few day we have been making recipes from the site. Between that and watching everything else I eat and drink I am having trouble reaching my minimum calorie-fat-protien levels even though I am never starving myself. Maybe that means I was eating WAY to much junk before.

Congrats guys on your new-found health!

Change
Sometimes changing your life is an attempt.
Sometimes changing your life is a Greek tragedy.
Sometimes changing your life is an answer.
Sometimes changing your life is a Goal.
But,changing your life is an attempt to stop a Greek tragedy with an answer to our Goal.
Winning!
When you attempt to change your life you win.
When faced with a Greek tragedy you change your life.
You win.
When you change your life your answer is you win.
When you change your life you reach your goal.
You win.
We have reached a place were changing our lives has alot to do with changing our shape.
Stopping To think about change is part of the answer.
I try to tell everyone that we are changing our lives as well as our shapes.
Truth is, when you change, your shape will change.
We fail when we do not get up.
There is only one thing that you can do more of that won't do you any good. Quitting!
So get up and change your life.
You will win if you don't quit.
I know it sounds simple but, that is the answer to YOUR Greek tragedy. Attempt to reach YOUR goal! Don't quit changing YOUR life. YOU WILL WIN!
Hope to see you with your hand in the Pickle Jar.
Remember we are changing our lives not just our shapes.

I've dieted and/or exercised off and on (mostly off) for the last 18 years or so. Have always been a little big, but at my height (6'7"), I hide it well. Last year I reduced the amount of pop I drank and lost 15 pounds in about 2 months (shows how much pop I drank). Put most of it back on though.

What really got me was watching a recap of 'The Biggest Loser'. yes, I know some people here didn't like the show or the premise or the weight loss goals. For me, though, it showed me two things - what I didn't want to be and what I could be. I never wanted to get 'that big'. But now I've realized that I'm not far off. So I started looking around and found this site. Have been here for 30 days now, lost nearly 20 pounds (my goal is 2 lb/wk, but I seem to be losing a little more), have more energy, have been playing with the kids more, etc. My real goal is to be there for my wife and kids 10, 20, 50 years from now.

My wife started about 1 week after me. We're helping each other out and doing very well.

What was the question?

I tell my wife I began dieting to help her with her diet, and this is about 80% of the truth. I am dieting to help her and to support her because of her medical problems. The two of us are losing because we both help each other to stick with it. I don't want to lose her and I'll do what's needed to keep her. The other 20% was a combination of health, enery, and vanity. I couldn't keep up with my grandson, he's 5 years old, on the playground. My students, I teach 7-8th grade math, were getting the best of me and I was completely rundown at the end of the day. Finally, I was having more chest pain and shortness of breath just walking the stairs.

That was all in October. Since then I have been running short distances, 100-150 yards with the grandson, walking the stairs without effort, and lately I've been walking about 2 miles three times a week. I've lost 45 pounds, don't have chest pain and can breath easier.

My wife has lost 35 pounds and her blood preasure has decreased as well as her blood glucose levels. She's off two of her diabetes meds and dropped her insulin from 15 units 4 times daily to only three units at night. Her doctor says she'll soon be off the insulin at this rate.

I'm in here in part for vanity, in part because none of my clothes were fitting and I didn't want to pay for a whole new wardrobe, but mainly because on January 3rd my BP was at 167/117 and I didn't want to take meds to bring it down.

So I fasted 48 hours and then started a low-salt, low cal diet on my own. I heard about this site and since I've been here I've loved it -- for the neat tracking tools, the informative articles, and the encouragement.

I'm happy to say that the BP has been good since January 17th (below 130/90, this morning, 97/72!). The trick will be to learn enough about living healthily so that the BP stays good after I hit and maintain my target weight.

I decided it was time to lose when I realised I couldn't breathe while tying my shoes anymore. When I got on the scale I was 290, and at 6' I had quite a few pounds to get rid of. I changed a few things and dropped 40 pounds within a few months. It was amazing how much better my knees felt after work every day. Two years later I have kept the weight off and 15 more along with it. I found SP and thought maybe this is just what I needed to get back on track to shed the last 55 and get back to where I was when my wife and I met. It's amazing how fast 110 pounds can sneak up on a guy.

My family has a history of heart disease. Over the last 10 years I have been slowly changing my risky behaviours (drinking, smoking). It is now time to work on being more active and eating a healthy diet, which in my case is no more chocolate and chips. I hope by living healthier to live longer. If that is not possible I hope for quality, and that comes with a healthier life style, I believe.

golfpro you and your wife and my wife are the inspiration for me thanks for the support and the idea that we can all do this. Its not easy to change 40 years of bad eating habits.

I was at a hotel fire doing some forcible entry and search and rescue, after i exited the building I had my Blood Pressue taken. 198/158 Well I acted like no big deal but it scared me into going to the doc. Now I'm on blood pressure meds and don't want to be so time to dump 50lbs.

To tell the truth I was sitting on the camode after installing mirrored doors on the shower(too make the bathroom look bigger) Wifes idea and it turned out to be just the motivation I needed. I was wearing shorts and no shirt and I thought I looked like a big fat bullfrog. Well I got off my but and did nothing. I started watching the biggest loser and could not believe how much wieght people who applied themselves were losing. But still did nothing. Then my oldest daughter asked if I wanted to go to the gym with her one day. I said no. And did nothing. For some reason she asked me everyday to go until I went. When we got there she said wait, dad I want to talk to you. She said you have always been there for me now I want to be there for you. You are fat and this membership is for you please use it you deserve
a second chance. Get off your but and do something about it. It made me cry. She is so proud of me goes twice a week with me and tells me you can do it!
She is getting married this summer and I want to look my best for the wedding. I am not doing it just for her But she was the one that believed in me. I wont let her or myself down. I owe it to her and myself to be the dad I always have been.

Hi Chris, thought I would pop in and say hi. Is your wife doing SP as well? It is a great thing to do together with your spouse.

My wife has been a part of SP with me since 2004. She went from size 14 to a size 4 and looks as amazing as ever. If you wander around the boards here you'll see her posting a lot! She actually works part time for SP now. You'll see her on the boards as Poohbear8798 or DeniseSparkPeople.

This is a great program for couples to do together!

Matt

Is your wife participating on the website and exercise as well? My wife is the reason I am here, and probably the primary reason I've had success in reaching my goals.

She recently told me that I made her previous attempts at weight control very difficult due to my fattening grocery lists. She is now leading us down a very good path and is looking very good. I'm looking forward to bathing suit season !!

My family has always been overweight. Most of them have had some osrt of back surgery or other procedure done that could have been avoided if they didn't have the excess weight. I don't want to end up like that.

I love my wife more than anything in the world and can't imagine putting her through the pain of watching me suffer due to weight related illnesses.

I've never been worried about what others think of me. Heck, I used to have green hair and blue eyebrows! (I'm still a punk at heart) I want to spend a LONG life with my wife, so I needed to make some changes.

Funny thing is that I was in the same clothes for so long I'm looking forward to smaller waste sizes.

Uhhhh, none of my "good" clothes fit any more. I'd invested a sizable budget in updating my suits, jackets and pants and strange thing was that when the pants no longer fit I couldn't wear the suits any more - strange how that happens...

I get asked this question frequently. Why am I changing so many things in my life to get in shape and lose weight at my age? I have a very attractive wife, we live well, I have everything I need.

For me, the reason was vanity. I couldn't stand to see myself in the mirror and was ashamed of my condition. Although we are a very active family, the eating habits were counterproductive.
