Wife says I can get back to riding... "after the kids are out of the house" :( so it'll be a while. They are beginning Highschool. The brightside is... give me time to saveup and see what new toys are announced in about 2011 !! Might be rockets by then huh? haha
Sure do miss my GSXR1100 !! Don't think the next one will be a crotch rocket though... maybe a HOG! like me :-D
Take care

Hi. i ride a 2000 Honda VFR 800 Interceptor. I love riding, and my wife started riding two-up with me. She's only good for about an hour on that wonderful stock Honda seat, so now I'm looking at a Goldwing or a BMW LT. Since they are both still a dream I can't decide. I would love to take the MSF course and become a Rider-Coach. Hope to talk to everyone some more.

There aren't any downers, while we love our bikes we like to promote a sense of repsonsibility that goes with owning one, anything that can make people think is never a bad thing.
The losses are great congrats.

Sadly no more :( had several crotch rockets through HS/college... but had to get rid of them when I went over seas. Had a gsxr1100 inn 87, then a Katana 1100 early 90s...sold them and went to Panama... saw a close friend there become one with a tree at 100+ and that really shook me up to the point that I lost the desire to be on the bike...not that I couldnt handle it...but realized that I couldnt control the enviroment... he was a semi pro racer and had all the skills in the world...but could not forsee the bus and forced him off the road. Sorry to be a downer here... just wanted to share. Be safe fellas

Al,
Nice to here it is begining to kick in a little for you, it is especially good when you and your beloved actually notice the changes, the secret I think is as well is that drastic changes can have a detremental effect in the long run, it is continuous journey, may seem a long way to the top of the hill, but we have both started out leaving the bikes parked at the bottom, it is better to stroll up and ease into it than trying to run up where you a shattered after 20yds and think better have a breather and end up back at the bottom again.
I had a 5lbs loss last Friday a little much but, when I have changed my habits before, staying off the pop, increasing exercise etc, I can loose quite dramatically at the beginning then level off this time I want to keep it off. This is good for me too as its like having a buddy to shake the weight at the same time so it works both ways. My wife thinks its good for me having some one to chat, if I help believe me its helping me, cant preach what I dont practice.
As to the topic give it a whirl, me was supposed to be exercise free to day, ha, 2 and a half hours in the garden with a shovel and grubbing mattock has left me shattered, hopefully moving home soon and some plants so I have been told just have to come, I thought the 15ft holly bush was taking things too far but all I got told was think of the calories you are burning ah a womans logic.
Biggest test tomorrow go back offshore for the month, so wont be on the meal planner so have to look after myself, hopefully should be able to check in each day so I'll catch you at some point.
Keep it up Al.

Little Jim,
Same as Harleyboy you get on that soap box and bang the drum, awareness needs to be instilled from the start, they try that here before you even sit on a bike.
You need to ride in anticipation of others.
Running quite a hard hitting TV campaign over here at the moment for car drivers, but to be honest as a biker it makes me think more as well, all about a car pulling out a junction and the net result when he ses everything but the bike.
Congrats on the loss, nice to here when it comes off steady, Im back on the scales Friday.

hi andy,
well today is day 4 of trying toget back to some sort of exercises. been keeping it kinda easy because i gota few battle wounds
(battles of life not war)i need to tend to. if i get to enthusiastic ill probably wind up at the surgen's office. been doing some walking on the mill(walkings pretty safe)and a few light curls and butterflys with my arms. so far its going well, moved it up a notch today. had a fairly small breakfast for 283lb biker. im starting to see some change in my attitude towards food and eating. yesturday i had food left on my plates at breakfast and supper. that in itself is a miricle, just ask my wife. i think she's still in shock. this site has alot to offer, but i think its great people that tie it all together. thnx for being one those people who take time to care about others. hey hey hey enough mushy stuff lets get back to biken.

i was thinkin about a new topic (well not new to us)but start a new topic with a twist. like THE ADVENTURES OF JOE(JANE) BIKER or maybe BIKERADVENTURES.com. but with the no.1, rule you have to start your post with something about how your doing with your healthy lifestyle change. that will help us stay on track and make sure we're supporting others when they need it. ya i no everybody hates rules, but breakin rules is how most of us got in the shape we're in. besides we can have fun with it. if you break the rule everybody can hit their buzzer or blow their horn or what ever. whatadiya think sound stupid? ive just seen some other bikers around the site and where there are bikers there great stories( and use the term loosely)
so let me know if you in. well i godda go too much huntin and peckin.

I couldn't agree more with your advice for young or new riders. I teach the BRC "Beginners Rider Course" for ABATE of Indiana. I would encourge everyone to look into somekind of training before jumping on any bike. I've seen young and old, beginners and so called experts hurt and/or killed due to lack of training. Bikes in my opinion are the greatest thing since sliced bread but they have to be treated with respect. Not just the mechanics of riding them, but ability to avoid incidents is equally as importatnt. Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now, I am very passionate about motorcycle safety. IT's 42 degrees today, I think I will take a short ride after work. Oh yeah, I lost another 2 lbs. still 18 to go for step one. the ultimate goal is still 38 lbs away.

To true all, the first thing they try to tell you in a CBT is that everyone is out to get you, this is why you have to be more aware, learn to handle the bike, read the road etc, one of the things they say as well, especially in built up areas is to do a commentary as you go along, "traffic lights ahead, woman with dog on lead, junction on left another on right, children playing" etc, all to get you into the habit of looking ahead trying to look for an escape route should the worst present itself.
Yip biking is fun, a lot of great and true people out there, but should never be taken lightly.
Keep her on the straight.

Thanks to you both for the sentiments, its nice to have natter of sorts, with folk who are in the same postition, support and encouragement are easy to give, I mean it all with the best of intentions and goodwill.I learned a lot from it in more ways than one I can tell you.
One thing over here is it ain't so easy to just take off on a bike you need to be licensed.
First you do a CBT this is a days training on a 125cc bike, the first part is control and handling, stopping, junctions etc, the rest is a 3 hour road trip, assesing position etc. Two max 3 persons plus an instructor who must be in radio contact with you at all times. This allows you a 125cc for 2 years.
You are then required to do a two part test, this takes the form of highway code questions, ie signs, stopping distances, bike care etc. The second part is hazard perception, 15 clips of developing hazards you have to click at the right spot when you identify when a hazard is occuring points are awarded for when you click.
You can then take a 40 minute road test, an examiner is following you giving instructions, includes turning in the road to examine control and awareness all done on clutch and back break, foot down is a failure on that part, a 30mph emergency stop, hill starts, walking the bike round in a u turn, traveling at speed, as well as basic questions on bike care.
Now if your 21 and over and you pass you are restricted to 33bhp for 2 years, unless you have done a direct access course, that is an intensive coures on a bike of around 600cc you can then ride anything you like, this is done on one to one tuition.
For younger riders you are restricted to the 125cc until you are old enough and the two years are up.
You then must keep your license clean for two years up to a max of 6 points, ie here getting caught in a 30mph zone doing 35mph is a £30 fine and 3 penalty points. normal here is 12 points and they will take the car and bike licences from you ban you from driving for a period and can ask you to take the tests again depending on the offence.
You both keep safe now. Catch ya later.

hey bigyin,
they say that what you do after the mistake is the difference between life and death. do something dont freeze up. i dont encourage people to ride bikes, if its in them it come through. i run into alot of guys that say im gonna git me a bike and start ridin. i tellum its a dangerous past time and you better think it through real good. then if you do still follow through and get a bike there is something ya need to do when you start riden. after your familiar with the bike and how it works find a large open UNOCCUPIED parking lot. a big one. go there and practice. the main thing to practice is stoping. not your basic stoping, but EMERGENCY stoping. start very slow barely moving and work popping that brake on without sliding or falling over. from there work your way up til you can shut that bike down at cruising speed using both brakes, no sliding, making turns by maybe using some cones or milk jugs.

YOUNG RIDERS YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON THESE MANUVERS BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED THEM SOMEDAY!!!

ive been riding some form of motorized bike since i was 8yrs old and it still scares the heck outa me when something plants itself in my path and decides it aint gonna get outa my way.

bigyin sounds like you did your part and the lord did his. so hats off to him, you, and of course baby! well gotta go: keep the shiny side up and the dirty side and have a good ride.

Too true,
It went somethig like this, truck starts to brake, no probs thinks I, 2 second rule etc doing about 58, roll off the throttle satrt applying a little brake as he is indicating to pull off the carrigeway (freeway) into what we call a lay-by, its an area at the side where you can park up for a bit, as he has spotted some mates at a burger bar bit, trouble is there isnt enough room, so he has to brake harder to mount the kerb to clear the carrigeway, by this time I realise he aint moving out my way quick enough, no room to get by on the outside with the traffic flying by, so it is the inside option, short width of side walk with the grass verge after that.
Anyhow braked harder, she starts to slide little ease off and think , yipee have her under control again, next thing I remember is hitting the side walk sliding and rolling onto the grass, still dont know what happened at the end.
The baby, fender panned into the wheel, smashed my spots off, took a chunk out me windshield, scraped the controls, but it was my pegs and saddle bags which saved her the most as she slid, as I was roughly aiming at his back wheels and not the drop bars that they have fitted here to stop a car from sliding straight under the back of the truck but would kill a biker.
Zipped tied the flashers up, sorted the wiring. Took the fender off and straightened with a prise bar.
Then went to Ireland, a bit banged up, pride dented sorry for my baby but had a ball in the end.
Have since sorted the fender, and reshaped the wind shield which for me works better now.
Any one you can get up and walk away from was a good one. Over here they say that statistically, a biker will come off every 15000 miles so I,m good for another 13000 lol:)

howd the bike fair out of that. kindof an unfair fight something that big picked on a bike. i hate when something like that tries to messup a perfectly good run. i had flat one time in grafton illinois. rear tire, tube type, on sunday, nothing open but restaruants.thought it ruined the trip, my brother stayed with me and hung out the rest of the guys went on with ride and one brought a truck back later. so while we waited we just checked out this little town. it was kinda cool. never woulda done it if i hadden had the flat. frustrating but rewarding. wish i could say it always turns out that good, but i guess it starts with us and what we want to make of it.

Hi Al,
Here is that link for Laconia Bike Week. My brother always comes up for that, he loves it. He usually meets up with some of the other Blue Nights. I don't ride, but I do love going to the Weirs to join in the festivities. Bike week this year is June 11th? The whole month of June is a great riding season up here. Like I said we are a bike friendly State, almost every sign you see says something like Bikers Welcome. The best ride is up rt.93 into the white mountains!!! That is Gods Country, it will take your breath away. The ride up the Kancamangus pass from Lincoln into Conway, is impressive riding. This year my brother is going to do the ride up Mt. Washington. One day during bike week, they close the Mt.Washington to cars, so the bikers can ride the Mt. safely. Anyway, I'm going on and on, and this the guys lounge! I think I should be getting back to the recipe board now with the other girls. Hey Al, I know Jesus too!(It's been six years ) God Bless!

Wow, Harleyboy..That is a great thing you got going there! My dad was a biker, always owned a harley of some kind. I grew up around the rough and the rowdy..Met a lot of great people in my life though. After pops died at the age of 40, many of those guys became like replacement dads to me (big teddy bears, all of them!!) Nice that you have a family oriented bike club. My brother is a NY City police officer, so he rides with the Blue Nights. Nice guys too!
Have any of you ever checked out Bike Week in Laconia, New Hampshire? What a rockin good time. We up here in NH are really biker friendly, and the state dedicates the entire month to bikers...It is our pride up here..We welcome all of you!!

P.S. My dad died at the age of 40. He was so obese and unhealthy. He died do to an infection in a leg that never healed properly after a bike accident. Docs kept telling him to lose weight, that his leg depended on it...he didn't! He drank too much, and ate a lot of bad foods...
The moral...I miss my dad so much, and he never got to meet his grandchildren. He would have loved them, and he would have been the BEST GRANDPA EVER!!! Me and my dad alway knew we would dance to Billy Joels "She's GotA Way" when I got married..He missed that too! Keep on track guys...your future grandchildren are depending on you!
God Bless,

man that sounds awesome, cruisin over there would be the ultimate. i also would like to blow around hawaii. problem is i would probably have to fly and i dont fly. but that might change someday (NOT).

i ride with a group of guys over here. weve come to call it THUNDERING THURSDAYS. it started about 3 yrs ago just myself and a friend from church wanted to dedicate some time to riding each week. so we picked a day,a time, a place to meet each week and started riding. as we told others about what wewere doing we kinda incorperated some rules of respect. some call it a christian ride, some call it a clean ride or straight ride, but basically heres how it has worked. we would PREFER no booze, drugs, fowl language or bad attitudes.we meet same time same place, leave on time, ride out 30min to 1hr stop at an ice cream shop for treat and ride back. usually home by 9:30to 10:00 (mid week gotta work). anybody can ride or ride along. dont care what kind bike, religion, race or age. bring your wife, your kids, or your gramma if you want. since the start we ve grown to as many as 20+ riders, men and women, teenage to retired, from devoted religious to hard core biker and we have shunned nobody yet. we have had a great time over the years and the core of the group meets together at local restaruants during the winter. this year we have almost rode every week (partly due to the person who shows up in his car takes a good ribbing for being whimpy HA HA). we have several rides around our part that do the bar thing and some our riders do that too. i myself used to do that also when i drank. alot people like this because we do more ridin than settin. its a come and go as you please kinda deal. who ever shows goes everybodyelse misses out. some really great friendships have developed. guys get together and plan weekend rides and share other bike events that they are doing in their lives. when it started we had no idea that it would go this far and im lookin forward to the up coming "riding season". man i gotta quit blabbin and get goin.

Nothing as wicked as that, been riding on and off since I was 11, got back into it seriously last year, my wife calls it my mid life crisis, as I was about to turn 40, however as a first I strapped a pack on the back and took myself off for a week round Southern Ireland some awesome scenery and some tricky roads, even smacking into the back of a lorry before getting to the ferry, didn't dampen the enthusiasm. Clocked up around 1300 miles all in and had a ball. Just me and the bike great time, hope to do France this year, back to Ireland and somebody is trying to tempt me to the mountains in Spain,we'll see.

when did you guys start riding? and how about some of your most awsome rides. one of my most awsome rides was the 100th anniversery party for harley in milwaulkee 2003. this was the true description of wall to wall motorcycles. look up, down, front, back, right, left, even under your pillow it was bikes. we camped with a father and son from the neatherlands. they got together with a 100 guys and rented a shipping container and shipped their bikes across the atlantic. they were touring the u.s. for 30 days. what was really cool was dad was riding an original 1930 harley vl and the son was riding a military issue 1969 b.s.a. 500. it was an awsome trip. waiting to hear yours.

Regarding the Myrtle Beach question, I lived in St Augustine Florida until recently. I spent many days and nights over the last 15 years at the Daytona events as well as the Florida HOG Rallies. I am quite burned out on the big bike events. They've turned into a yuppie bike show (not that there is anything wrong with yuppies, I are one). Every event has the same vendors, same look, nothing unique from state to state.

I will make the ride to Myrtle off-season as well as a trip through the Outer Banks of NC.

The Yamaha Serow 225 that my Dad owns, is street legal. He used to ride it to work in the summers. I love the bike, but the only problem we've noticed about it is that it's exceptionally cold blooded. If it's cold at all you will not get the bike started. That and the battery runs dead on it regularly. I think that's just a quirk of the individual bike, rather than the model in general, but man... hard to start if it's cold.

Chris hi,
was out yesterday as mentioned giving it licks through some nasty twists, heck did I notice it this morning, new saddle changed the riding position, and I was on different roads the chest was stiff as anything and tight, had to go out again this morning just to ease it off.

I love being on two wheels, even if I have to pedal for it. We live about an 1.5 hours from the Blue Ridge Pkwy, couple hours from the Dragon's Tail. The Blue Ridge Pkwy is difficult to explain without seeing.

By the way, fuel injection works best up here. I have had the Electra Glide loaded with luggage and wife and have left hot rods behind because of the EFI and Big Bore kit.

I need to ride the BRP with a heart monitor once to see how many calories are consumed. I do recall that I sleep very good after riding, probably all of the smile muscles are tired after 8 hours.

I just sold my 1981 Yamaha XV920 when we moved to our new house. Bigyin you might know this bike. Yamaha sold lot of these all over europe, but they never got big in the states. It was a rare bike here. It was not the Virago style but more like a Ducatti monster. After I lose my first 50 Pounds(and get my wifes blessing) I'm hoping to get a Triumph BONNEVILLE T100. I miss the ride.

Hi-girl here-but me and the guys all ride Hondas when we get the chance.
Since I'm the only F in the house, I really do tend to empathise with guys-I'm even one of the boys in the band.

PS-15 days to DAYTONA!

My folks have all the bikes, but back when I lived with them, a Suzuki Quad Runner, or a Yamaha 225 Serow. We rode in the mountains, rather than out on the open road.

I'm not a guy (hey, I read women were allowed to post here in another thread, so don't shoot me just yet), but used to have a BMW R1200 C -- until I had to give it up for a boring old car. I don't think there is any-thing I have ever loved quite as much as that bike though.

Then again, I have my sight set on a Cirrus SR22-G2, so if I ever am able to purchase it (say, in, thirty years), I'll probably end up loving it much more than I did that bike....
