| AHUOTARI- like you, I used to do orienteering. Of course, I grew up at Fort Riley, so orienteering is more common around military bases, I guess. It was a blast, and much more challenging in a hilly area, trying to read topographical maps.

Terry - The short answer is that you go out looking for a cache or hidden "prize" that someone else has hidden and posted on-line. The prize is mostly little trinkets or a log book you can sign and leave comments in. You take a prize an leave a prize so the cache is self perpetuating and changes as more people come. The ones where you actually get out in the woods and walk are more fun than the ones that send you to a Wal-Mart parking lot as mentioned above. It is a fun and healthy past-time.
I learned orienteering when I was living in Finland and loved it, but never found anything local. This relies on a compass instead of the more gps focused geocaching. Other than the Army, I never was able to find an organized orienteering group so when I found geocaching, it fit the bill. And don't get me wrong, you can very easily do geocaching with a compass, too. A gps is not required.

| Welcome, PAPASNAPDRAGON. It's good to see guys on SP. My wife spazzed out when she found out that the message boards are mostly female- oriented and -run.

I'm a geocacher myself, although I haven't been out in a while. I got into it while living in Europe, and geocaches would take me to cool obscure castles and other historically significant places. In the States they take you to Wal-Mart parking lots.
Have you ever felt like the biggest dork trying to explain geocaching? It sounds really stupid when you explain it I think, bit if someone goes out with you they think it's fun. It's even harder for me, because I'm a geographer (bachelor's degree in geography, and right now I'm working on my master's), and all the people in my department get kind of elitist about it and laugh at me. Oh well.

| I love being in the woods and -and head out into em every chance I get-but I have not got myself one of those fancy geopositioning gizmos yet.I love hiking and walking-especially in the cooler months.
