unfortunately no, they only teach jiu jitsu at that school, it's a really small school. i may go back and try it again, just to see how it goes and how feel. it was worth a shot, i'm always game to try something new.

sounds very interesting, i'll have to check into it. now i just have to figure out how many calories i burned. we were there for 3 hours and were active for most of it...spent maybe an hour just watching. we did a lot of stretching and conditioning type stuff plus the technique training.

Hey there, my wife and I started Tae Kwon Do last september and its been the best thing we've ever done. You really do get a great workout, learn self confidence, discipline, and respect for others as well as yourself. Physically it is fantastic what it does for your core muscles. If you are interested in martial arts but want something more than "wrestling" you should go watch a tkd class sometime. Most schools will let you watch for a little while.

the jiu jitsu class was fun, definitely a good workout. i'm not sure how long i'll stick with it. it's more of a wrestling/tumbling martial art and my neck and head can't handle that, so i may check into something more like tae kwon do or something...but it was fun, i'll try it out a few more times and see, i have one month free.

Rachel--

That sounds like a lot of fun!! I don't know anything about jiu jitsu, but here's what I do know:

Martial arts are great for toning your core muscles (though a lot of balance work) and developing strength. I'm sure you'll get a great aerobic workout out of it too, but that depends on how much of the class is actually practice versus watching and learning, you know?

And this is a good example of a point that we always try to make: Exercise should be fun! This sounds fun and interesting. Also, training for something and trying to improve your skills in that area will probably make you work harder-- but because you WANT to. That hard work will pay off for your new skills, and your fitness level.

Sounds great! Good Luck-

Nicole

I'm starting a jiu jitsu (a martial art) class on saturdays, gonna try it for a month, i have a free pass. I'm wondering what kind of benefit I'll get from it. I know martial arts are very demanding, but this is a beginner class. I guess I'll have to see what it's like and then figure out what kind of calories I'll burn doing it. I think it sounds fun, so that'll be nice, exercise and fun at once...yay!
