I work in a bridal gown store (we design and manufacture). We have sold gowns from $99 to $20,000 It just depends on how much the gown means to you. For some people, the gown is just something to show it's a special day (as compared to everyday wear), and for some it's a gown that makes the girlhood dream a reality. I've found that brides feel more special when they're more dressed up than your guests. That doesn't mean to buy a custom couture gown. You can find GREAT bargains in sample gowns.

I don't think I would spend more the $1500, just because inevitably alterations are going to need to be made.

I'm actually going to be wearing my Granmother's dress, which didn't cost a thing... until the alterations :) which reached about $380... I had another dress made for me, for when I start dancing and sweating, but that actually didn't cost much, I think less than $100- my wedding is in a week and a half, and I say- AS LONG AS I'M COMFORTABLE

I looked everywhere for my dress! I probably ended up trying on about 75 dresses because I couldn't find "the one". The dress up getting was about $4,000. I think it's worth it though, because I couldn't imagine wearing anything else. I feel like a bride in it : )

I went into the bridal shop and told the lady not to show me anything over $500. Well of course she didnt listen to me and I ended up finding THE dress for $680. It was alittle more than I wanted to spend but I LOVE it. I am also wearing my friend's veil which is gorgeous- so i will be saving $$ there. I love my dress and I cannot wait to wear it!!

My fiancé and I are also paying for the wedding ourselves. We had a long engagement in order to ensure that we could save up more than enough to have the type of event we would like to have.
The dress was a big part for me, and I did splurge on a designer gown. I am thrilled with my choice and can't wait to wear it!
After the wedding I am planning on selling it and recuperating about half of the cost.

Its interesting what you all say about dresses. When I first got engaged I went to a dress shop with friends to get some ideas. Every dress I liked was way over my budget. In the end I bought a bridal magazine, found a dress I liked and got a dress maker to make a replica.

The dress in the magazine was nearly 2500 euros, my copy was only 290 including sending it to japan for beading. no one who sees it can believe I paid so little for it but I couldnt in a million years justify spending a large amount of money on a dress I am only going to wear once

The bridesmaids I found on the net. They were the perfect colour and size so I got them. As they were only worn once they look as good as new and I got them for next to nothing

My fiance and I are paying for the wedding ourselves so we are on a budget and to be honest I would rather spend the money on the honeymoon, something we can both enjoy and benefit from rather that the "dress of my dreams"

I think its a bit selfish of brides to expect to put a large chunk of the wedding budget towards the dress when their fiance's end up wearing simple suits

For me my dress was a very important part of our wedding. My fiance and I both agreed that I wouldn't compromise when it came to my dress. I fell in love with my gown fairly early in the search and it cost $725. I am still contemplating on the veil, the one I like is $150, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to make one with the help of my little sister...If you DO find your dress, shop around to other shops that can get it in though, I saved $100 by going to a different shop than the one I tried it on at!

It's one thing to spend a chunk of money for the dress of your dreams, but I refuse to pay a lot for a veil. Bridal stores way overcharge for the accessories knowing they have you roped in. The veil my sister wanted was $300 at the bridal salon, she made it for $40 with materials from Jo-Ann fabrics - including Swarovski crystals. Anyone with only the smallest amount of craftiness can make a veil.

I ended up paying $800 all together for the dress, slip, bra, veil, and tiara. I'm worried about alterations though. I bought my dress a size 14, I'm now down to a 10 and still planning on losing some more!

I can't see spending $$$ on a dress I'm going to wear one day so my budget for my wedding dress is $400. I have several dresses I'm interested in that are well with-in my budget and I'm happy.

I spent $299 for my dress and it is beautiful. I actually went to the store and picked the one I liked, it happened to be the elast expensive one.

Find the dress that makes you happy. However, with that said, anything over $1000 is madness.

My gf dress costs 5k at her wedding it was amazing but it was over 5 hours later.
For me I really like mermaid dresses and I wont be spending anything over 900 tops. If that much

I think that, in my opinion that the wedding dress is one of the most important items. I have found some dressed that I like that are between $800-$1400.

Laughing* I know what you mean about the wedding dress shows with the girls that are spending a fourtune on their dresses. :o)
I haven't even looked into things like veils, hair pieces, accessories...like gloves and shoes yet. Alterations I know are usually around 300.00. Wow there's a lot that goes into this stuff.
Would any of you wear a used dress or veil~?

The budget for my dress is $500. Same for my fiance's. Both our outfits are being custom made by a seamstress who speacializes in Medieval and Renaissance clothing. We might end up going over that in cost, but I can't see us going too much over it.
Veil is $13 and the headpiece is around $20 (making them mysef). Yay budget weddings.

I love those wedding shows too. But there are the times when I think "You are spending more money on your dress than I am on my wedding!"

I think $700 is more than enough for me. That would be my limit. I like the idea about prom dresses, but I'm not sure I could find one that is what I want without it costing $400+ anyway.

I have a hard time imagining spending too much money on a dress I will wear only once. I got mine for under $500 with alterations. If I had all the money in the world it might be different.

My dress was $499, with the slip, bra and veil it came to $700.

I got my dress on sale for $299 from $500 and I think that was enough. I would not have gone over $500. My dress is gogeous and beaded and everything I wanted. You just have to look around!! Be patient and don't make rash decisions.

I actually have two completely separate ensembles (one for ceremony, one for reception) and even at that, I'm only spending $1000. The only thing I'm wearing for both is my hair ornaments and underthings.

I'm not a fluffy-dress sort of girl, I wanted something more grown-up, sleek and elegant anyway, so one of my purchases was a Watters/Wtoo bridesmaid dress (style 186) - just $205. Much more me than the typical wedding dress, and a heck of a lot cheaper.

Don't forget to look through at bridesmaids dresses in addition to wedding dresses. There are so many styles that are formal and elegant. Most can be ordered in white or ivory and the majority cost under $200! I really like Jim Hjelm's designs.

Smart girl! A white prom dress or elegant party dress is MUCH cheaper than a "wedding" dress. Save the money and show how smart you are!

Thankx, I hope so too. I know the dress is just a small part of the whole event, so I have quite a ways to go...but thankx for the well wishes. :o)

Okay I just found the most beautiful dress ever in the world. Thankx to all the great advice from you sparky gals~! It is almost 800 dollars but I am going to take the pictures and description to someone else and see if they can make it for me. Usually it ends up being less I have heard.
I never thought I would love a dress...I have never been very girly, but this is the one~!
Thankx again everyone.

honestly, it depends on your budget, and what you can find. you can find great dresses for between $200-$1,000. i got mine for $550, and i absolutely love it - i think that's another thing, too, you do need to absolutely love your dress. you need to just be able to put it on and know that it's the one.

for me, the dress i got was the first one i picked off of the rack and tried on...but it may take wading through many dresses to find yours.

patience, you will find it. :)

I'm planning to hit the sale rack after prom for a white prom dress. There's is no way I would spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a dress that I'm going to wear for 12 hours and then stick in a closet and never wear again. Plus there's not a huge difference between most prom dresses and most wedding dresses. If you want a train, you can get one made that attaches to the dress, so you don't have to bother with bustling. I don't think it matters what you wear, you'll look beautiful on your wedding day because you're so happy.

I tried on my dress at the bridal store and then went online (months later) and bought it NEW for $300.

The fabric for mine was about $500 and I'm expecting the dressmaker to charge me about another $500-600, that includes making a matching waistcoat for my fiancé - so about $1000-1100 all up.

I would like to get mine new. I don't think I will have to spend a great deal of money on a dress even if it is new if I shop around. My Fiance' said that the dress budget is up to 6,600.00. I was like ohmyigosh I can't even imagine spending that much on a dress. I am going to shop around. I don't mind traveling for a deal either. But hey gals, thanks for the advice. My New Years resolution is to refrain from cry about my wedding. think I can keep it~? yea, me neither. :o(

my first wedding i ended up liking a $99 special at david's bridal. the alterations, slip, veil, and bra cost over $300 though. i liked dresses in magazines, but when i tried them on they were not flattering on me. try to decide what neckline, waist, fabric, style and train flatters you. depending on where you live, you may find a reasonably priced dress. there is a second-hand dress shop near me, but i am superstitious and think these dresses may be bad luck.
You're only wearing it once, right?

I too loved watching every bridal programme I could get my hands on. DO NOT be sucked in. I got the most perfect, beautiful wedding dress for less than £300 english pounds. A good friend of mine is now insisting that her wedding dress is going to cast at least £2000. That is madness. She is even having to postpone her wedding for an additional 2 years as she wants everything to be so expensive and they need to save. Surely marrying the person you love is more important than saving for a expensive wedding. We are all entitled to our own opinions. X

I believe you can find your dream dress for under $1,000...I did. I too have been watching bridal shows on t.v., such as Say Yes to the Dress. I love the show, but I couldn't imagine having a dress budget that is more than my budget for the whole wedding. I ended up spending $1,200 for my whole ensemble. Hope that helps!

Okay so I am preoccupied with all things finacial. Who knew professing your love of another person in front of familly and friends could be so expensive. It's almost like Christmas...meaning sometimes the "reason for the season" gets lost in the cost of celebrating it.
I said all this to say that I have been religiously watching all those bridal shows on T.V. about getting the right dress. People are spending anywhere from 2,000-10,000 dollars regularly on their dresses. In the beging of one show it talks about this mythical wedding dress that somehow transforms you. The dress of your dreams that you've been dreaming about~!
HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR DRESS YOU YOU, HOW MUCH WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO SPEND~???
