My fiance and I are very anti-religion, so we are having a civil ceremony performed by my grandpa who is an LDS Stake President.

We are having our wedding in Danvers, MA. He will need to file with the state about 3 months before the wedding. We need to write a letter to explain why we are not using a regular JOP or religious person. He will get a written approval from the governer for a 1-day approval. It's actually a pretty simple process.

That's so cool. What does your friend have to do to be sworn in? Where are you having the ceremony?

My fiance and I are planning on a Civil Ceremony. Since neither of us are tied to one church or one minister we decided to have our good friend sworn in to do the marrying. We have both agreed that later on if we feel the need to have the religious blessing we can just restate our vows.

I'm having one in May. Then in December when we have some $$ saved we are going to have a religious ceremony and reception.
