The knot and wedding channel are good for getting ideas, especially if you ask in the local message boards about vendors. Since I used to be in the business, I learned alot about both. The vendors with the big huge ads, are not "the best" they're the ones that paid the most money for those ads. My SIL planned her entire wedding using just the ads on the Knot and she was quite disappointed w/ the professionalism and quality of the work from some of the vendors.

Any MA girls, the Boston board on the Knot is fabulous. They have another site where they have listed all the vendors they've used and a ton of reviews on them so that you can actually learn how the vendors are.

I am actually on both the Knot and weddingChannel dot com. I like both, but the Knot is my favorite (that is where i found out about sparkPeople). I bought a book called something like "the everything wedding guide". I read it and realized i wanted a planner. So that is what i have. Alot of reception sites have their own cateror, so that is a good thing (or not, depends on who you are). The best thing about the Knot and WeddingChannel are that you can locate vendors in your area and email them questions, and meet with them if you want.

I hope this helps, and good luck. Email me if you want.

Here's a link to my 3 ring wedding binder

http://www.celebrazione.net/prod01.htm

at the bottom is a link to the zip file. You can save the files in Word and edit anywhere that is says "Bride" or "Groom" to be your name and your FI's name. Then print it on heavy paper. Once I've done that, I put it in a 3 ring binder w/ pocket dividers. I can keep my contracts, pictures and ideas organized.

Let me know if you have any issues w/ it.

Another idea:

Something I do for EVERYTHING is keep a three-ring notebook, and when I see something in a magazine I like, I tear it out, punch holes in it and put it in the notebook for future reference. Mine has sections for things like decorating ideas, recipes, exercises, organizing tips, etc. You could do one for weddings with sections for flowers, dresses, invitations, food ideas, and just keep track of what you like. You'll see a style that emerges, and if you end up having someone do work for you (a planner) this notebook can be VERY helpful in giving them a sense of what you like. A lot of wedding planners like to plan the wedding THEY'D like, regardless of your own style. This can give very clear guidelines!!

Hope that helps - you've got a ton of time to prepare. Have a great time, and enjoy your engagement!

Congratulations on your engagement! And don't stress too much...you have plenty of time to plan a wonderful wedding. I would focus right now on getting ideas and figuring out what kind of wedding you want; causal or formal, traditional or contemporary, things like that.

I belong to an online community called Must Love Weddings (www.mustloveweddings.com) and you'll find lots of great ideas and great advice from the other ladies on the board.

Congratulations again!!

your wedding is very far off so i would spend some time just deciding what you want for your weddings style etc. Spend time looking for ideas.

and you should join a site (wedding channel or theknot) they will be able to help a lot in your planning. I'm not sure about the wedding channel but the knot gives you a checklist of things to do each month and is very helpful. I live off their tools.

There's a big thread on "DIY" stuff right below this, if you are interested in doing a lot of it yourself. Since you have a while, you could get a lot done between now and then!

I found The wedding Channel(dot com) to be really helpful with timelines and checklists, etc., and I've heard The Knot (dot com) is really good to.

If you can afford to have a wedding planner, they are great. A close friend of mine is an event planner through a catering company, and she has tons of ideas. Maybe your caterer has someone like that on the staff, too.

First steps would be: choose the date; find the venue; find a caterer; start looking at dresses; and I guess, before all of that, decide what kind of wedding you want. I went with very little frou frou, because I'm just not that kind of person - I had very little "traditional" wedding stuff, because I just wasn't into it. There's nothing worse than stressing out about something you don't even want!!!

Congratulations, and good luck!
