I can definitely relate about not being about to justify expenses of an oversized wedding with lots of money spent on things that won't really matter in the long run. David and I decided on a destination wedding for those reasons. We both love to travel and are going to get married in Mexico and honeymoon in Costa Rica. We will have a small ceremony on the beach at our resort. Some family and friends will be invited and hopefully will come. We will get away with spending MUCH less money than a big traditional wedding and will walk away with priceless memories and experiences. We are planning on exchanging vows and being married before leaving for Mexico to avoid Mexican requirements to be legally married in Mexico. I originally was thinking JOP, but now I think I will ask my minister at my church to marry us there w/o a big ceremony. It seems like he could do that... I don't know though. We wouldn't invite anyone or do music, dress, flowers, etc. - I think it would just be nicer to not be in a courthouse. Anyone ever done this / know of it being done?

We don't have JoP in Minnesota; one can get married in a courthouse by a judge, but we're having our wedding in a park, so we hired a guy who used to do weddings at a local resort. The wedding itself will be pretty small- 20-25 people and we're keeping costs low. My dress was just over $100, and my sister is my only attendant. We're doing boxed picnic lunches from a local catering company (less than $10 each). The park is full of flowers, so we'll probably do nothing more than a bouquet for me to hold. I'd much rather keep things simple.

Wow. . . it sounds like you're really on the right road to a wedding that is both personal and affordable. WooHoo!!!

Congratulations!!

Also, I wouldn't worry about the favors. From what I'm reading, they're on their way out. . .

Best wishes!

We are using a JoP. The main reasons we are using a JoP is because I was raised catholic and he is protestant(i think) and we are doing our wedding out of state and we dont want a long ceremony. We have booked our ceremony and reception at the same place. Our wedding will be held outside (if weather permits) and the reception will be inside. I found a shop where we live that rents wedding dresses. I have already went and picked out my dress and I also get the veil w/headpiece, jewelry, slip, alterations, and cleaning included in the rental price of the dress. Altogether it came out to $192.50. My mom is making our cakes. My aunt is cooking all the food for us and helping with decorating the reception hall. My cousin is doing all of our wedding party flowers. I dont really care about flowers for the decorating of the hall. We are just going to have people take pictures of us with their cameras and my parents are bringing a camera and a video camera to tape. All of my bridesmaids got their dresses for $99 and their shoes for $15. We are not hiring a caterer or anyone to pour the liquor or cut the cake. I just dont see paying someone to do something we can do ourselves. We are starting to buy the beer and wine and champagne now. My aunt is also making spiked punch for the ones who dont like beer. We have also found a dj for $225/ 4 hours. I am so glad that I checked the internet for wedding vendors because I just dont see how my parents would have been able to pay for the wedding. Oh and I dont think we are doing favors just because we dont have the money to do them.

You may want to check out www.indiebride.com There are a LOT of non-traditional brides (and grooms) there with lots of wonderful advice and sympathy. In fact, I found out about sparkpeople through indiebride.

Enjoy!

Oh sorry, JoP = Justice of the Peace. We're skipping a formal wedding because we want the marriage really badly but can't justify the costs of a wedding, and don't want to delay getting married for another few years to save for 1 day.

Not sure what a JoP ceremony is but I understand what you are saying. I am planning a wedding/honeymoon I am hoping to have the whole thing done for under 5,000. We are going to central america for a week that room & board, scuba diving, meals for the week are $659 per person and airfare is about $600. We have invited only our closest friends and family with a list of 10 in total, so the reception will also be small. I can seee stretching my dollar down there for a more than what I can get here....

My fiance and I are planning to JoP due to family issues and financial constraints - what mattered most to us was the date, so we are getting married this August 11. We decided against a wedding because we are saving every little bit for a down payment on a house and we want to start trying for children right away (I am 36 and have never been married, no kids). So we decided that the thousands spent on a wedding could be better spent, for us. We splurged to get just the rings we wanted but everything else will be informal - just our parents and us, and the courthouse. Maybe in a few years we will have a vow renewal on an anniversary and a reception or party that everyone can attend.

I see a lot of posts with people planning weddings and talking about huge costs, and was just wondering if I'm the only one here who is still really excited about the big day yet isn't planning a traditional wedding with the formal dress, catering, attendants, flowers, $$$, etc?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has been or is in similar circumstances!
