I work for a production company and there is a lot of different ways to do it.
If you're into graphic stuff Adobe After Effects is a cool program, but it is expensive.
If you have a mac, idvd works wonders, very user friendly, imovie works too if you have any short video clips you'd like to include with pictures.
Also most PCs have some sort of simple video editing software, my dell has some on it, that works too, if you want to go to DVD.
And power point will work too, just remember that you'll need the computer set up to play it on the projector or TV.

There are a few ways. We took the more complicated route and used film(DVD)-making software. I can't remember the name...sorry. There is a much easier way to do it--simply using Microsoft Powerpoint. Do a slideshow and set it to music. Burn to CD-ROMs.
TIP = You'll need to gather somewhere between 75 and 100 pictures (it truly depends on the length of your song and how fast you want the slides to move).

If you're fishing for creative ideas, have you thought of putting together your own movie on a DVD or creating a Powerpoint presentation on CD ROMs?
My fiance and I wrapped up our wedding DVD project this weekend. Heck of a lot of work, but a lot of fun, too. We compiled pictures our baby years, childhood, teen years, adult years (before we knew each other), and of us as a couple and set them all to the funny/quirky Barenaked Ladies song "If I Had a Million Dollars".
Then Todd, to the theme song of "National Lampoon's European Vacation", created a second presentation revolving around where we're going on our honeymoon (e.g., Italy).
Quite cute!
