Norrie - you can contact me at: okanog@msn.com The townhouse gated community is for 55+ I am not moving to the island.
Camille - Don't think they allow size choice for pictures in here. Happy to hear you are back on line.
No walk today - fell asleep this afternoon and didn't wake till it was dark. Couldn't figure out if it was pm or am - computer clock is handy device to know wether it is day or night!

Betty This is all very exciting for you. I'm excited too as the townhouse route is where we are headed. Would you tell me where on the coast ? Please don't feel pressured, if you'd rather not. I take it that it is not on Vancouver Island ? I would love to be near family too. BUT we are all scattered - one sister in Edmonton, one in Orillia,ON, 2 sons in ON but 2 hours apart and one son in Vernon. You surely had a busy and fulfilling Thanksgiving. Glad you were able to get out and walk. You have an excellent moving date ! Happy for you. If the scale is up - so what?! - it'll be down again before long Me? I AM up - big time. Pleasant decorating dreaming...Norrie

Hello All!
Left early sunday morning, spent the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend at my sister's place on the coast.
There were 3 townhomes for sale in her complex. She mentioned since our kids have left home and we are so far apart.....wouldn't it be great to be neighbor's? I had to admit it would be great.
So I put an offer on 2 of the 3 townhomes, the third townhouse, didn't like because of the back patio area was not private. Though the price was listed way below the other two.
Anyway one place rejected my offer and would not counter offer. Which was really stupid I think on their part as I was willing to go higher! Ahh, well their lose.
I put another offer in on a place next to my sister's place. Low-balled it and the owners counter offered. So I accepted their counter offer and well, just got home, today and listed my property for sale. The possession date is end of January 2006, that is if I my place, sells. Time will tell. At least won't have to move thru Christmas or New Years.
I am probably up a few pounds, haven't stepped on the scale today. Went for a late afternoon walk with friend and the dogs. Been walking all week down on the coast but much shorter walks.
My sis doesn't have a computer and doesn't want one.. I had given her an older computer's which was internet capable and so has her son but she says it is boring. So to each their own choices.
Didn't have computer withdrawal as thought I would, too busy visiting friends and planning how I will update the place if all goes well. Comes with all new appliances but the flooring needs updating. Recently painted a nutural color, so could live with that for awhile.
Hugs! Betty

Hi Nimbus Neen, I posted the report of my trip in the Gaijin Chronicles (my journal). Had a blast, nearly got killed, met some wonderful Japanese folks.
I'm already planning my next adventure for January. Going to go up to Jigokudani Yaen-koen in the Northern Alps to see the Snow Monkeys bathing in the Hot Springs... Really, I'm not kidding. I'll post a website later and you can see for yourself.
Okanog, how's it going? Where have you been?
Feeling better now that my cold is waning and I'm back at work and doing my daily walks.
Judy - where are you? Missing you. Hope all is well. I think of you every day and wonder how you're doing.

Hey Jazz Nice to hear from you. You are missed. Anxious to hear a little more about your 'retreat'. Okanog - did you have a good time on the coast ? Get in some walking? Judy - how's it going ? In all areas ? Hiking with our Outdoor Group more regularly now. Finding ever more trails that we haven't been on. Still going alone in 'our' forest out back, too. So beautiful and fulfilling being 'in nature' - clean, crisp, peaceful. Good days everyone. N

Hi Ladies, Had a good weekend up in the mountains. Did a little hiking the first day but then the rains set in and the weather got nasty for the rest of my trip. Still had a good time, though.
Well, now I'm home and back to my regular routine. I actually lost weight while I was gone. There is a lot to be said for the Japanese diet. Just wish I liked the food more; it's pretty bland.
Hope you are all doing fine. Laurie

It is pouring rain this morning. Don't think I will get a walk in today if this keeps up. Shall do my treadmill instead.
Going down to the coast for Thanksgiving, spending a few days with family and friends.

Today 90 minute walk this morning. Getting very dark and dull this afternoon. Looks like is going to rain soon.

Sounds Great Judy! Running around doing a few errands - 60 minutes walking today. Cloudy with sunny breaks here today.

Lots of walking to report today - about 40 minutes this morning and 30 minutes this afternoon. The weather just invites walking.

It is another beautiful day in Nova Scotia. I walked to the library this morning to use the computer (30 minutes). After I am done here, I will walk back home (another 30 minutes). This afternoon I will drive to visit Mom.
Laurie, I, too, am looking forward to hearing all about your trip. What an opportunity!
Norrie, your hike sounds like fun. I'm glad you could be there.
hugs, Judy

Hi Ladies, Sorry I've been absent this week but I have been thinking about everyone and doing my daily walks. I'm averaging about 3 miles per day plus about 30 minutes every other day on my new elliptical. It's a tight fit in my tiny apartment but I haven't broken anything...yet.
All of your talk of mountains and forests and fall has inspired me to get out of town this next weekend. I am going up to the Japanese Alps to Hakone and Lake Ashi. The leaves should just be starting to turn; the season is still early here. But I expect to see at least a little color.
My destination is the Fujiya Ryokan (hotel), built in 1850 something on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi, and the first resort built in Japan. It was a popular hangout for the Shogunate and the Japanese Imperial family back then, as a summer getaway in the mountains.
The lodge I will stay in is called the Flower Palace and is to this day very little changed from when the Emperor had it built in 1870. Each room is differently decorated in period art and furniture, and all have bathrooms with private soaking baths; the water is piped in from natural Hot Springs. I don't even want to whisper how much money it costs to stay there per night!
I was trying to get reservations for Friday and Saturday night but could only book Friday. It seems the Japanese book Saturday nights up to a year in advance. I feel lucky to have gotten in at all!
So I will only be up in the mountains for two days. But I plan to do a lot of hiking. According to my Japanese co-workers there is much beauty to be seen: forests, waterfalls, Mt. Fuji, ancient Temples and Shrines and so on. I am very excited to say the least!
One of the most fun parts of this adventure will be the train trip from Tokyo to Hakone. This train is not part of the JR Rail system but a private train, called the "Romance Train". It is a narrow gauge rail, and the cars were built near the turn of the last century. It winds up through the mountains, and over deep gorges.
But first I'll have to get from here to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo early Friday morning. That means I'll have to try to get on a commuter train in the midst of morning rush hour; an adventure in traveling if there ever was one.
They have white-gloved train conductors called "pushers", and that is literally their job. They physically push more people onto the already packed cars... All very politely, of course!
Very busy at work right now and trying to get ready to leave early Friday morning so you may not hear from me until I get back, So have a great week and keep on walking!
Laurie

Hi Ho all To-day we hiked with our Outdoor Group. We chose the 'Lite"hike, rather than the regular and so did 13 other people. We went around the point from one Bay to another and back again. Up and down the side of a mountain, not TOO stenuous but enough for us. Ocean in view all the way. Gorgeous. This is a group that is on the hedonistic side (lunch afterwards) which is quite agreeable to us. The 'Regulars' are - well - regular , whereas the 'Advanced group' are totally masochistic and quite proud of it !! Took us 2 hours. Total 12000 steps for the day. Felt good, but I have to admit that my eating is out of control. New day to-morrow. Okanog - I made a bunch of chicken pot pies last week. Winter must be coming ! (chuckle) Hey how's the pedometer ?
|
|
|
|
This morning, I am making some individual Chicken Pot pies and some chicken stew for the freezer. Pies are in the oven, so taking a break in here.
Then heading out for a 2 hour walk, with the dog. It is SUNNY but fall is in the air. Anticipating a good walk. Got the pedometer but it is not working, so shall stop to buy some batteries for it along my walk.

Okanog, you are too smart ! Poured rain here yesterday. We went to Victoria and walked all over the malls (I hate malls but sometimes one must get some errands done) Didn't time myself but 7900 steps there and spent TOO much on gas getting there. You give me a fresh perspective. We are thinking of downsizing, and though I love rural, perhaps it would be smart to live in or near town. It WOULD be nice to walk to groceries etc. I think I would feel very noble - both for myself and for the environment ! Have another lovely 90 minute walk to-day. And remember ! If it's raining, it IS a free facial !

Hello, NIMBUS-NEEN
What a change in the weather from yesterday! I was up early as usual. Love the quite of the morning before the traffic starts for the day. The forcast was rain and the sky was darkish grey. So thought I'll just wait to see what it plans to do. Got tired of waiting and went for 1 hr morning walk. By midmorning it was starting to brightren, so head for another walk, this time to the grocery store, just a 30 minute walk there and back. So got my 90 minutes for the day. Sure tried to rain, but only got a few drops on the way home and that was it for the rest of the day.
Just thinking or trying to remember the last time, I filled my car up, was around July 26 and now down to half a tank. See the money I am saving on gas by walking everywhere! Cheers to foot power!

Okanog - what a perfectly lovely serendipitous day you had. BTW we had a cougar sighting in our woods this week - The Ranger (I call him 'Deppity Dawg" - teehee) commented that it was probably a yellow lab......
A 3 hour walk is mightily impressive.

Nimbus-Neen I agree the fall is beautiful and refreshing after a long hot summer, though do enjoy each new season as it comes around, yes even winter. Laurie, I too would love to hear how the landscape changes are in Japan.
I seem to be stuck on a plateau, weight not declining but then again it is not increasing, so will just wait for my body to re-adjust, again. I do know my clothes are fitting better so somethings are changing!
I have been enjoying early retirement for sometime, now. Yesterday went hiking along the creekside, with friend. When a women with her two little preschool children came swooshing by on bikes... Bears, Bears up ahead she exclaimed as they passed us on the path! It is that season the bears come down to the creek to forage for trout. Our 3 hour walk ended abruptly with a return to our car. So we decided to drive up into the mountains, stopping here and there, what ever took our interest.
We stopped at the LaCasa Resort, I new development starting on the west side of the lake. They are selling cottages all with lake views, it has it's own general store, bar/resturaunt, swimming pools, tennis courts and a comunity hall. It is really not that new, about 10 years ago a fella tried to develop the land as a motor home park, where one would buy a recreational lot. He sold the remainder of the undeveloped land and the new land developer is building summer cottages with lot for sale.
So we snooped thru the showhome model, then went for lunch at the bar/resturaunt. Had the special, a baked fillet of salmon in Phyllo pastry, rice pilaf and salad. Needless to it was delicous but was stuffed and that was my lunch/dinner.

Hi Jazzorama I've been wandering down the proverbial garden path. I keep returning to the road to goal and then I get distracted again ! I think fall is an ambrosiac for me - somewhat like spring fever. LOL Robert Camus says " Autumn is like a second spring when every leaf is a flower". Yes, the mountainside is liberally sprinkled with reds and golds amongst the green of the firs. I am nostalgic for northern Ontario,Quebec,Vermont, where just the opposite occurs - bits of green peeking out of the red and gold carpets. I really like to-day's "Feature " don't you? What is fall like in Japan? Yesterday and to-day - 60 min. hike/ 55 min. hike 8900steps/8630steps - (goal is 10,000) And Laurie - being retired is a blessing. I am able to rearrange my priorities at will, at times, and to take a day off with my nose in a book is bliss. Too many joys - too little time.......I am grateful. Laurie you mentioned steps per hr. It is very individual. Each of us takes different steps. Should we walk together (wouldn't that be nice?) our pedometers would register differently. Norrie xo P.S. I need weightloss motivation !! P.P.S. Congrats on your new elliptical. Should be wonderful for winter weather and/or night time exercise? The best I have is a rebounder. Fun to dance to jazz on it, though !

Hi Nimbus Neen, That sounds like a good idea. I'll look around for one at the Exchange. I always wondered how many steps are in a mile (for short little me!)
And you're NOT bad! Taking care of the flesh is one thing. But what good is living a long time if you can't take care of the mind and spirit too? A good book is a great way to rejuvenate the mind and the spirit.
Just wish I had more time! I love to read!

Hey Ladies ! Time to invest in a $10 pedometer ? I bet you'd be amazed at how much running around you do ! 10,000 steps a day is recommended ! Hope the birthday party was a lot of fun. Cheers ! P.S. I only made 2600 steps yesterday. I indulged in a good book. I'm bad!
