| Working out on an elliptical, recubant bike or working out in the water is not so hard on the knees. Both of my knees hurt and I find if I break up my walking into 10 minute sessions 3 X's a day they do not hurt as much. water aerobics does not bother my knees at all and I get a really good work out. It's important to stretch after any type of exercising. Good luck, hope some of these suggestions help.

Hello, I just joined today so glad I found this site. I have knee pain in both knees. I went to the bone & Joint Dr and yes he was talking about a knee replacement, but said was a little to young for it right now. Glad to hear that over 50 though.. I want to exercise I have a treadmill, but heard that was not good for knees. I also heard the Tony Little Gizelle was a good piece of equipment for Artritic knees.
I hope we al will lose the weight we deserve to lose and enjoy life pain free.. Have a Good Day

| I have pain in both my knees and will evnetually have to have total replacements in both knees. I am so not liking the prospect of surgery and the recovery. How did you fair with recovery and how long were you unable to work? Right now I get synvisc shots which help me tremendously, but I still cannot do many many things, but at least with the shots I am able to get around, grocery shop and do housework and cooking.

| Hi, I have knee pain also, have for years the doctors mention surgery, don't really want to do that yet. I'm hoping with losing 50+ lbs will help. I have walking tapes, I walk 1 mile a day. I was using a bike for exercise but found that my knee was hurting more, My doctor said to just stick with the walking. I also have a hard time going up stairs, my right knee does not want to bend to walk up stairs.

Hi, I will tell you, as of today I feel better, and it is raining here where I am, usually I am in pain if it is raining. Ask your Doctor if you are not sure. Good luck, Eunice

I tore my miniscus in the right knee about 4 years ago and surgery did not help. My left knee took the brunt of my walking. Two years ago I had bilateral knee replacements. Last summer we walked all over Italy it was a miracle. I am getting in shape and loosing all the extra weight with my eyes on Greece for this year. I recommend getting an excellent doctor and doing what is necessary. Life is too short.

| Thanks for the idea. I usually try to read a book while on the bike because you don't realize how much time has gone by, but its the idea of just getting on it that is the problem. I thought that this weekend I am going to check out some of the gyms in my area and see what the cost to join will be. I used to do Curves when I lived in California, but the hours where I moved to now are just not working for me.

| Hi GuildLady, I have the same problem with motivation. One way I entertain myself on the stationary bike is to watch a DVD. When I stop pedaling, I stop the movie. When I get on the bike the next day I continue watching the movie. If the movie is good you want to get back on the bike to see what happens next. Another is to find things you can do with your hands. I'm into crafts so I can do things like knitting/crochet or wire jewellery. Good luck finding your motivation.

| My heel and knee both hurt on the same side. I was walking my dogs when I twisted my knee last summer, and it still hasn't totally healed, probably because of my heel. I also start limping after a very short time trying to just walk. I love swimming for that reason (non-weight bearing) but I don't belong to a 'winter pool' so it makes it difficult. The dr said my heel is planter fashiatits (sp?) so I try to stretch it out, and that does help. I also walk slow. My brother gave me a foot massager for christmas, so I rest my heel on that when I 'compute' I know that if I lose weight, my joints will feel better, less work for them!

I am glad to hear that other people have the same problems I do! I had arthroscopic knee surgery twice on the same knee and have had problems walking. If I walk about 2 miles the knee gets very stiff. I hate absolutely hate exercise and have to get over that or this weight will never go away. I have a recumbent bike, but don't like riding it much. Any suggestions to help keep me on track?

| Glad to find some commiserating folks. My right knee has bothered me since 1995 which does not encourage me to exercise. Needless to say the scale has been going in the wrong direction. Doctors just say "exercise and loose weight". Big help! How do you exercise when you're limping after walking 10 mins. Recently, the left knee has been giving me problems scaring me into action. I found that a recumbent bike is doable though my knee is sore afterwards so I have been consistently using the bike 5 days a week for the last couple of weeks. Today is the first day the pain has receded. Maybe the doctors know more then I give them credit for.

Hi All,
Same here I have been trying to exercise, do low impact, but nothing helps. It is the cold weather, I also have this in my family. I have been trying Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar, I hope is helps. Thanks for your support,

| Hi all, I'm new here. I have been lurking for a while. I have bad knees too. It runs in the family and the excess weight doesn't help the problem at all. I have been doing low impact aerobics and still have problems. I think the cold weather is causing me problems too. Arthur Ritus comes to visit on a regular basis and about the only thing that helps is a UV heat massage wand. I g ot it at a garage sale and it really takes the swelling down. Hope you get better Eunice.

| I,also have been having a lot of knee pain and have put off execising, but today i decided to do a walk a mile tape and just go slow, and actually my knees have felt better this evening, not nearly as stiff as usual. I have about 5o lbs. to lose and know that in order to succeed I have to exercise everyday but when you hurt it is hard to get motivated. Good Luck
