| I have not lost any weight for about a week now, I am blaming it on the lack of water. Whatever just something to blame it on, I have very flabby under arms that I am ashamed of I will not wear sleeveless shirts, but i am going to hang in for a while.

| "Hang in there" has a new wrinkle to it now. Maybe it's time to put away for a little plastic surgery when we have completed our journey successfully . . . not all skin is responding to exercise. The muscles are though and that feels good on the inside.

Hi, I saw this message and it 'sparked' my attention!! I am 58. I would like to know that if I am loosing weight, HOW do I also tone up the skin that is stretched? Will this also firm up with the firming of muscles?? Thanks Jill

| I was not sure myself. I had been going to a trainer for 3 years. I definitely gained strength, but I only gained weight. Her answer was " cardio, cardio, cardio"....Well I thought I would burst and was so uncomfortable, anyway, that said, In September, I went back to my old gym and started to work out. I met up with some people, who are great. The problem was that I need to know how to get fit!!! I am now preparing for a mini-triathlon at the end of May. I feel better than I have in at least 20 years. It is a lot harder to get fit, but I am determined to get fit and stay there. I read the Dr Oz book and if any have read that, We need to be fit!!!!!!

You definitely can do it! Last year I lost 70 pounds. Many weeks only showing a .5 or 1 pound loss, but as the weeks went by, I was feeling better and taking longer walks. At the end of the year - I was shocked at the loss amount. This year I need to lose 33 more, so far 10 has come off. Some weeks I have stayed the same. I needed to lose weight for blood pressure issues, so far I have lowered my Med's three times. Take one day at a time and if you have a binge/relapse - please do not stress over it - everyday is a new beginning with new challenges - try to think positive thoughts!

You can do it Jean! Just believe in yourself and keep it going, never give up!

| I am glad to hear you think it's possible to lose weight over 50. I lost 10 lbs. since jan. 3rd, weighing then 188, now 178. I have come to a standstill and I was blaming it on age. I will exercise more this coming week, eat better, wiser, and hopefully I will continue to lose soon. I have a college graduation, my daughter's masters, in May and want to look young!!!

Heck yeah! We can do anything at any age if we set our minds to do it!
Way to go SUMMER20081.....you can do it!!! I'm rooting for you!!!!

| Hi there, This is my first time replying to anyone. I have started the tuff task of getting healthy, loosing weight and becoming the person that I want to be. I started at 186 lbs. I started on Jan 10/08, and now I'm 173.8 lbs. I'm 50 years old and have decided to take back my life and do things for me for a change. The next stage of my life will be a strong and healthy one. You only start to look at yourself and life differently as we get older, and say ,"why did I not look after myself before". Things get more scary as we get older and more little things start to happen in our health. But they can change if we start to take care for ourselves, and get healthy. I just took the plunge the other day and decided to commit to the impossible! I work with the Nova Scotia Community College,(disability services). We have started a Swim of 28 klms. This will take place in the Greek Islands in September this year. We each have to train and raise at least $6,000.00 or more. The money goes to an unfortunate student that can't afford the tuition to the college. This way if each one of the team members raise 6 thousand dollars or more than we can each send a student to school. This will be the hardest and most challenging thing I ever thought to attempt. But I'm going to do it!!!

| Yes you can be fit over 50. It does take work and commitment though. One step at a time, slow but sure. I have found that losing slowly has helped me keep weight off.

I have not logged in in about a year and now I am at the point where I feel out of sorts and tired many nights. I just started back in exercising and watching what I eat. I hope I can maintain. L

| I am very fortunate that I am active at work. I am walking all over the building all day long. This is helping me with my cardio points. It doesn't help with my tired aching feet.

| I'm feeling good -- just walked for 30 minutes on my lunch hour with a co-worker. Yes, we have the time to take care of ourselves now that the kids are grown and (mine) out of the house. Unfortunately, I don't take advantage of it as often as I could and should. I've got all the time in the world to exercise or give myself a facial in the evening and yet more often than not I opt not to. I am working on it. "Baby steps!"

What interesting comments!! Seems like I have gained in the past 7yrs, as I changed to an office job and yes, I got lazy. Do I think I will ever look like I did when I was 20? No, but it is not the end of the world. I am losing for my health and to become happier. Yes, it is working. diabetes runs in our family and I am terrified of getting it. Perhaps I can delay the onset, if indeed I am to get it at all. This is the right time for me as a person (53yrs old) to do what I am doing. The kids are grown up and now I have time for myself to take care of myself!

| Hi ISG -- Thanks for the great thoughts! We do seem to have very similar circumstances. I am "in" on encouraging each other and everyone here. Congratulations on those 12 pounds! You're well on your way. I am really hoping I will see a loss on Monday when I weigh in -- my scale is showing 2 pounds but I don't consider it "official" weight except for my Monday morning weigh-ins. I'm really focusing on getting my water in this week and eating healthy. I'm taking some baby steps towards getting back to exercising. I'm excited for us all -- WE CAN do it!

To: RainCityLiz Your issues seem identical to mine. I try and try and try for a while and then stop. But, let's encourage each other as well as everyone else on this forum to stay consistent. I am currently 51, turning 52 in May. My weight became excessive at 47-48. I have not been able to get back to 135 since then. Right now (after losing 12 lbs) am at 154. I'm trying to get back to 135 because this is when I have felt my best, physically, emotionally, and mentally. Don't give up. We all slack off once in a while, but let it go and stay positive each day. Whatever happened yesterday, is gone. Let's all focus each day to do our best! Good luck to all! isg

| I believe that we can do whatever we set our minds to, as long as we remain consistent. I lost about 40 pounds when I was 48 -- I had been very thin from childhood until I was 38 -- then I just gained and gained. I lost the 40 pounds and kept it off for 3 years -- the last year of which I ate whatever I wanted and never exercised at all. Time to get back to consistency. I have a little under 30 pounds to lose, I am 51 now, and I know if I am smart and stay consistent, I can lose the weight, gain muscle and really improve my health and longevity. My problem -- staying consistent!! That's what I am vowing. I finally started back up yesterday and stayed within my SparkPeople guidelines for calories in, and I also drank 10 cups of water -- amazing for me. I am up to 6 cups today so far and haven't strayed on the eating yet. I think all of us over 50s have the wherewithall. Yay to us for trying to improve our lives and fitness levels!

| I think being fit is completely possible - especially since SparkPeople was invented.

| Yes, I know you can get and stay fit, over 50. I'm in my early 60s and, after a 20 lb weight loss, I can manage 60 minutes of cardio and 40 minutes of strength training quite comfortably.
|
|
|
|
| I meant to add to my previous post: I feel and look fitter now than I did when I first lost all that weight. I think it's due to exercise - I walked all while I was losing the weight, but now I'm doing more. I plan to add more exercises soon. I recently hurt my ribs and as soon as they settle down I plan to start using my abciser again and also to do some of the strength training exercises mentioned on these pages.

| Well...It can happen! I had never been over-weight tll I hit the ripe old age of 35. That year my oldest son died of a brain tumor and I guess the stress and all. Well, I gained and lost for several years and in 2001 I gained in excess of 40 pounds! Someone asked me to go to weight watchers and I lost 52 pounds in 8 months. I struggled to stay within 2 pounds (a ridiculously low amount IMHO) and a year later was over the limit. My solution - stop going to WW. I subsequently gained nealy half of it back and finally got serious about losing again at the start of this year. I'm happy to report I'm almost down to my original goal weight and am planning to shed another 5-10 pounds. I walk (outside when it's warm, treadmill when it's cold) for about 30 minutes twice a day. My 2 daughters, one of whom has lost about 65 pounds this year) are very supportive. My dh and I both follow the WW guidelines and he, too, has lost a lot.

| I am so happy to hear such encouraging words from everyone. I have dreams of toning up and looking like I did when I was in my twenty's but I guess that will never happen so I am now just aiming to be healthy and fit.

You surely can if you have the inclination and determination.
Here's an excerpt from a very inspiring SP article:
Ruth from Alabama—65 years old in 1995 and never been out of the state. She decided she’d raised her kids and now it was time for her self. She banked a year’s worth of vacation and on January 1, 2000 got on a bike and rode it around the world, visiting 47 countries. She now runs marathons and kicked my butt in Antarctica.
The whole motivation article is worth a read if you didn't read it already.
What Can You Learn While running Around the World? Life Lessons Each of Us Can Use -- By Mike Kramer and Joe Hale
Good luck with your fitness goals - we're all struggling to keep going so you're not alone. Its not easy but I know we can do it.

| Yes! You can get fit over 50....doesn't mean you'll have that 23" waist again. But being healthy and energetic counts for a lot. Not to mention what feeling good does for your skin and relationships.

Thanks for the encouraging words. It just seems that everything hurst more than when I was younger and it truly is hard to get motivated. I did do some "dancing" this morning and I've been up and down to my basement so many times (cleaning) Also, I'm on my second 16oz bottle of water plus two cups of coffee, so I'm almost there today. Thanks again.

Welcome Bruanne! The answer to your question is YES, it can be done. I'm 54 and have been overweight all my life. Until I joined SparkPeople last January, the only exercise I got was walking to the refrigerator. I made my mind up last year to commit to this lifestyle change. Since then, I've lost 85 pounds, I've gone from No exercise to excercise 7 days a week, I'm no longer tired during the day, I smile more often and feel much better about everything.
Don't try to do everything at once, I know when I try to do that, I overdo it and then give up.
This time, I concentrated on one thing at a time until I got that part right, then went on to the next. It worked for me!
Best of luck to you.

| Hi. I truly believe that one can get fitter at any age. Sure, it might take baby steps...but, it is and will be worth the effort. Since you have Type II Diabetes, you have to watch what is eaten. And, I realize that is hard sometimes. But, watching food intake is necessary to a healthier lifestyle. Work on getting 8 glasses of water. Might take some time in that area, but, add to each day. Exercise..walking is one of the better exercises and doesn't require added equipement to do it. Start out with a few minutes and add to it. Don't forget to try to work in some strength exercises. Look for ways to get exercise. You know, like parking farther away from door when shopping etc., take the stairs instead of elevator...things like this. If there is anything that I can do to help you,or you want to talk, please, contact me.

| Hi Ladies and Gents, I know there is a Forum for "Getting Fit Over 50" but I was just wondering: I've been overweight since I could walk and been up down UP, UP, down like everyone else. I've been active when I've gone down and then sedentary on the way up. (Obviously) The question is: having been doing some exercise during those periods of time when I was going "down" can that be a plus to getting fit after 50? I feel like I'm doomed to be overweight the rest of my life and that life will be shortend. With Type II diabetes I'm doomed. I need a boost from someone, anyone who's doing it now after years of, well, you know...
