I second that!! I realize it can take awhile to undo the bad habits but getting healthy is what it is all about. I am hoping for a reduction in BP medications in the short term along with elimination of the cholesterol med - with 6 weeks to go until the Dr visit - the health benefits are my primary goals. It is good to read it really can happen.

| I would be thrilled with a size 12. I am in this for the long haul. More about getting, staying and being healthy. The image in the mirror is not what I am working for, the stats for my blood pressure and cholesterol are my focus! We deserve to feel better. Go us!

| Now you are talking, I wear a size 12 shoe and am very glad I am now able to buy cute shoes in my size! Although I have worn this size for a long time I have many women in my family who try to size down, not a good idea when the feet are involved. I don't care if my feet shrink one little bit, although I have heard people say sometimes weight loss will affect shoe size. One thing I am not embarassed about is my shoe size (I am 5'11" so would topple over if I wore a size 7)

Love all the comments. My one daughter (30yo)is 5'8 and at 130lbs wears a 6 or 8. When I got married at 25yo I was 5'5 130lbs and wore a 14. So there is something to what everyone is saying about the size change. Several people in my family are size obsessed. My sister can try on a pair of jeans and she really likes them, but if she has to go up a size she will not buy them. Height, weight, and body shape, muscle mass all have to with what size we can wear. My sister had to be convinced that her shoe size has change over the years. She would only buy one size and her toes hung off the front of all sandels she wore. NOw she says she wears a size 8 shoe, but a 9 feels so good, she buys a 9 1/2.

Oh my gosh, this is one of my pet peeves! 12 is a perfectly acceptable and attractive size! I want to get down to an 8, but I feel comfortable at a 12. I'm closer to 14 right now... and it's not the size that bothers me... it's the flab around my middle that I didn't have a couple of years ago.
Has anyone read about Trista from Bachelorette fame? She gained 30lbs while pregnant, immediately lost 15lbs, and then spent 5 months losing the other 15. Now I give her credit for doing it, but really... she made it sound like she was so unattractive and horribly overweight. She looked GREAT at 15lbs "overweight." Someday she'll understand that she DID look great!

| size 12 is really the current size 8...manufacturers figured women did not want to say I wear a 12..so they lowered the size gradually. I know what size I was when I wore size 12..my daughter is THAT size now and she wears an 8!!! So I am thinking....hmmmm at a size 18....what size would I have been then? I am glad that I am dieting now so that I won't have to think about it much longer. I can be an 8 or 10 too!

You know, this really saddens me that people have to be so dishonest with themselves in order to feel good by playing with the sizes this way. I love Sharona's comment about size has to do with ego because that is exactly what it boils down to.
Years ago I always wore a 10-12 and at 5'4 and 120 lbs, received a lot of compliments on how I looked. I have wondered for the longest time why so many women are suddenly size 4 and 6 but didn't realize the "industry" was being so dishonest ... but then, why am I surprised? Another 'politically correct' ramble to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.... Right now I would gladly wear my size 12's again if I could and be perfectly happy doing so

| Last week I came across a short article about a unnamed Fashion Designer who changes her sizing based on her weight because she refuses to wear anything but a size 6 - so, in her line from one season to the next a real size 6 person could end up with a 2 that fits just fine!

| I would be delighted to be a size 12...that said a size 12 isn't what it used to be. Over the years the garment industry has increased the size of the sizes!! This was done to aid the consumer in denying their weight gain. When I was 20 I weighed 98 pounds and was a size 5. Today my granddaughter weighs 115 and is a size 4. A size 12 will fit me when I reach 170. ( I know this from my yoyoing) When I was about 35 and weighed 125 I was a size 12. What is wrong with this picture? But after all is said and done I will dance a jig when I can get into a size 12 and still breathe!!!

Just remember that once upon a time there was no such thing as a size 0. I believe that clothing sizes have changed to accomodate these newer small sizes which are technically what were once size 4's. Today 2 would be equal to a 6. A size 4 would be equal to a size 8 and so on. Based on this, a size 12 today would be equivilent to the old size 16.
Maybe I'm wrong but when I hear about women weighing 140-150 lbs wearing a size 8 it just doesn't add up to how sizing works in my mind.

| My goal is a size 12 as well - maybe when I am there I will rethink but for now size 12 seems like nirvana!

| My goal is a size 12. That was my size for many years and I think I looked pretty good. It seems many male and females like that little boy look these days. What's wrong with curves, as long as they are in the right place!! I guess it does depend on the heighth and muscle mass. I think the right size is where we feel good about ourselves and can move about freely.

| I think I read somewhere that Marilyn was a size 12 or 14. But then cane Twiggy ( for those who are old enough to remember)and the perfect woman size has never been the same.I often wonder what she weights now.I guess the thing we need to rmember is to be the best and the healthiest we can at whatever size we are.

Sharona, I couldn't agree more! I am an RN by profession and calling and have seen so many health problems that were actually engendered by this sad "size-ism" that is obsessing our culture. Most of it is truly NOT about health or feeling good or having enough energy. I also think that some of it is about control. So many folks that I have spoken with feel that much of life is out of control and seem to feel the need to impose some sort of "order" on their lives that they approach this out of balance.
Besides, perhaps (as a man) I am more than a bit old fashioned but I rather prefer a woman, esthetically speaking, who looks healthy and like she approaches her life from a balanced and sensible perspective and not who appears to have one grand obsession.
I think that I read somewhere that Marilyn Monroe was a size 14. Not sure of the number but it was something like that. Who am I to argue with that, eh?

My niece told me that when she was about 31 she complained to me that she weighed 130lbs. I do not remember this, but she said my response was be happy at 130lbs and stay there. She is now 42 years old and she reminds that it was good advise. I said it because I have been a yoyo dieter all my life. First diet SW147 GW met at 115. Second diet SW 175 GW125. Last diet 10 years ago SW227 GW159 met. Here I am again at 56 years old wishing I would have maintained 147.
One more thing. My girlfriend recently told me that she has weighed the same for the last 10 years. She is small, but at 54 the weight has shifted and she wears a larger size now. She exercises faithly.
I think if your 15 years old and you weigh 125lbs. Stay there. Do not start the Yo Yo dieting. Try to maintain that weight with a life style of eating that is healthful and allows you to go out for pizza with your friends. Believe me stay at 125lbs and when your 25, 35,45 you sill be very happy with yourself.

| I have to agree with you.All we see anymore are the skinny models or actress who bones stick out and we have been progamed to believe this is normal and anyone who still have some curves are obese and ugly. It's no wonder we have so many young girls with eating disorders.

I would love love love to be a size 12 !!!
However its not about the size of my clothes its about the fact that I am unhealthy at this size.
Kind of funny to see all the movie stars and magazines full of size whatever and then walk down the street in any city or town and see how wonderfully different we all are.
So I need to make it about wanting to see my grandchildren grow up not about my clothing size! regards mizemma

A blog that I read recently and the Woman’s World article on Sparkpeople.com has made me think when did a person who wears a size 12 become overweight? In my mind a size 12 should be considered “normal.” Of course this can vary because of height, but come on folks! Are so many American really overweight or have become “skinny” obsessed?
I would be happy wearing a size 12. At 5' 5" in a size 12 I was very well proportioned. How tall is the young woman, who went from a size 12 to a size 1? A size one? Come on let us get this in perspective.
Weight is way to measure your health. Sizes are a way to measure your ego.
Have we become just as obsessed as Hollywood is about “skinny” “small” “little” women?
We have become knowledgeable about being politically correct in so many areas but when it comes to overweight people. The word fat is okay to use, but so many other words to describe people are not. Teenage girls can handle being called anything but “fat.” They commit suicide over it. Fat people have become the most discriminated against above everything else and it is acceptable society to do so.
Losing weight should be about having good health and inward happiness. It is not about being a size 1 vs. 12.
