Kitty,

Do NOT focus on not becoming your mom. I have seen so many women concentrate on this -- their mother could be fat or an alcoholic or depressed or a hypochondriac or whatever. Didn't matter. Because this was their goal, they actually became their mom! So consider: why do you want to lose weight? Surely it is not because you don't like your mother! Come up with a list of positive reasons. Write them down. Read them at least once a day. Focus on them. You may be surprised; your mother may be so impressed she will want to become like you!

I am working out a lot to lose the pounds that have come on especially due to Lyme Disease. I walk every week day morning and consider a pill for wellness. I need it wheather I need it or not!

At 54 yrs. of age I get fit much the same as when I was 30.

After finding the SP site I've taken on the battle for regaining my life. I'm also resolved to hang on to my health after I regain it, so with that in mind and keeping my goals achievable I work towards them and once achieved immediately assess my position and establish new goals.

Strength training, aerobics, nutrition, stretching, frame of mind and motivation all are important ingredients for my getting fit over 50 goal.

Lindy, I think you are absolutely right about the importance of weight training to stop the loss of muscle mass. This is key not only to our metabolism, but also to how we look and feel.

Kitty, getting started on better eating and exercise habits NOW is the first step. After all, you aren't getting younger and it won't get easier the longer you put it off. The metabolism slows as we age. So helping to increase your metabolism is a good first step.

The ideal of small mini meals throughout the day is something almost everyone can do. Just don't overdo it -- eat healthy. I'm also a big believer is weight training. We lose muscle mass as we age which slows our body's calorie burning even more. So a set of good dumbbells in graduating weights is a good investment (resistance bands will work too). And don't forget your cardio! Walk whenever you can. Jogging, bike riding (actually pedal -- don't cheat by coasting! LOL), swimming, exercise tapes/DVDs are all good.

It's a lifestyle. Good luck

I agree with the eat lots of small snacks so your never really hungry. I have learned that adding a couple of sources of calcium to your diet will aid in the weight loss journey. Maybe some fat free cottage cheese for a snack or some tasty yogurt would help speed up the process. Something in dairy has been a proven route to success. Somewhere I read scientific proof. Can't remember where though.

Eating a wide vatiety of foods seems to help as well as making exercise just another part of my day. I also make sure I eat 3 meals a day plus 2- 3 snacks so I never go that long between eating.

Welcome Kitty,
Focusing on eating whole unprocessed food (organic whenever possible) is a great strategy. The trackers make it easy to see the breakdowns and getting plenty of fiber rich food will keep you full longer and aid weight loss. Add exercise and the metabolism will be boosted. No magic to losing just healthy choices.
Enjoy this healthy lifestyle.
Personally I found it worked best to become a vegetarian.
Best of success to you.

I'm not 50 but I am close, I'm 46. I have found it soooooo difficult to lose weight lately. I'm scared I might give up the fight and give in and become my mom.
That is my biggest nightmare. Are there any tips you guys can share with me that would help me reach my goal? I was weighing 125 lbs about 4 years ago, and I have not been able to go back to that weight again. It's like my scale is stuck at 140 something.
Help....
