| Junk food is a big issue for me too. In my office we have a lot of meeting where there are left over cookies and lunches and I am really addicted to things that are salty. But I do think most of why I am overweight is the junk food and sweets. eating out doesn't help either so I plan to only do that one time on weekends. Other times I have dieted I switched junk foods with fruits and that really helped me start to lose. I always end up having some emotional crisis that gets me down and I reach for junk food and start to regain - But I have never looked for support before and I think SparkPeople will really help me with that. I heard if you can give up something you really love for 2 weeks then the craving goes away so maybe if we never even take a nibble of things we know we are addicted to for two weeks we can lick it!

| I like fish better if other people cook it for me. There was a great place we ate in Alexandria, SeaMaid or something like that. You picked the type of fish, amount, preparation, etc. Then you sit and they start you out with mezza and hot bread. The fish come out as soon as they are cooked.........all different times, usually shrimp and calamari first, moses fish, and so on and so on until the BIG FISH! It is the most wonderful seabass cooked over an open fire with olive oil and fresh herbs...........DELISH

Good Morning to you Sharon! I'm sure that olive oil would be just as good. The thing I like about the recipe is how easy it is and how quick it cooks. Oh, yeah, and very low cal and full of nutrition!
Have a great day! Mary Kay

Good morning, I make most things from scratch too. I guess that's why I spent all day yesterday working on that spaghetti sauce but I got it done and it's all ready for the freezr. We had it last night for dinner and it's actually quite good.
I spend a lot of time putting various ingredients into the food tracker too but now that I know it's easy I'll probably start entering the recipes I use into the sparks recipe page.
I checked your recipe for tilipia and it sounds good although I don't use butter. At least I try to use only olive oil, I know when I eat out that they sneak it in on me.

Mary Kay, I make everything from scratch too. I try to eat organic as much as possible. Now that I eat so much less, I guess I come out even.

Since starting on my journey to optimum health one month ago, I have started making almost everything from scratch. This way I know what is in my food. It takes a lot more time when logging food into my nutrition tracker, but I feel great! I am slowly moving towards organic, but my pocketbook is unhappy with this switch. Good luck to all on your journeys to optimum health!

| Hi everyone just checking in from Iowa here I had been eliminating junk from my diet before I found the Spark People web site I read labels and try not to eat anything that has high frutose corn syrup in it or enriched flour. so nothing that is not whole grain. I have also dumped all pop I just dont think something with that many chemicals can be good for us. once in a while I slip up when we are out but for the most part I think we need to remove as much processed stuff as we can.

| I wish junk food tasted like beets or something like that. My taste buds crave all the processed starches and sugar that makes the junk taste so good. It is a hard habit to break. It's a constant struggle for me. I keep trying!!!

Wow Sharon, I didn't know. Kind of like Buffalo NY. I lived near there in my childhood. On the map it looked like a warmer climate than that. How long will you be there?
I see you joined my SparkTeam. I'll see you there.
Hugs, Sandy

Hi Sandy,
This past year was a freaky weather pattern in Europe but Bosnia typically has horribly cold winters. They measure their snow in meters!
We moved here from Cairo so this was a change. I was so concerned about cold that I bought thermal underwear when I was home during Christmas. It's been a long time since I've even had any.
I went to a different coffee shop yesterday that had bowls of fresh fruit on the table instead of serving cookies with cappucino. That is one nice shop.

I am trying to eliminate foods with aspertame and hydrogenated oils. I too drink diet pepsi or diet coke too, and they both have aspertame it them. I am getting better with reading the labels on the foods that I buy. I look for 100% Whole Wheat bread and we just bought smart balance to eliminate the hydrogenated fat. I do eat UTZ Honey Wheat pretzels. They have no hydrogenated fats in it. I am trying to stay away from white flour too. I have good days and some bad days when I really want a potato chip or candy, but not that often anymore.

Hi Sharon, Well this winter when I'm looking at the thermometer dip to below freezing, you'll be warmer.
I don't know what I would do without airconditioning now, but in my younger days didn't have any.

I don't know that life is that perfect here, I live in Sarajevo, BiH. This week is exceptionally hot and we don't have air conditioning. Oh the simple things we miss.

When I was a young adult, I never ate processed or junk foods. I was a slim 118 lbs and ran 3-6 miles a day because I loved it.
Then I started to eat junk or processed foods. Little by little they erroded at my health.
And our children. My son never got junk at home. But he later told me he would buy junk with his allowance.
They should require a little sign on all junk foods that gives a warning.

| Yes, it has been four years and I don't miss any of it at all. I did not eat much even before avoiding it forever.

I agree that it's a difficult thing to do. It seems every time I turn around, there it is.
Sharon what country are you in. Sounds like a little paradise to me.
I find the hardest part for me was giving up diet coke. I've given it up totally now but that was hard.

| Living in a country with somewhat limited processed foods, it's easier. I go to the market (this is a huge outdoor fruit and veggie market) to buy my produce. I go to the butcher to buy meat (not sure what type of meat I get but look at it and say I'll take a hunk of that biftek (which I interpret as beef), go to the Pekara to buy bread and we do have wonderful whole grain breads available but no preservatives so must freeze it in pieces since I don't eat much of it. The other good thing is that I must walk to each place which adds some good exercise to my daily routine.
|
|
|
|
I haven't stopped 100% yet - but making better choices is easier and easier.
|
|
|
|
| Not all of it...yet --- but I'm sure alot closer than I was. I think about the last holdout for me is cold cuts ( turkey ) that add to my salads.
