Trying them is the best bet because there are so many kinds and have so many bells and whistles. Not to mention price. Figure out what price you want to pay and what features you want from the bike. Do you want a heart monitor? Do you want it to be programable to simulate different terrains? And so on. Once you narrow it down to that, then try just those out. Where I live, we have a store call, "play it again sports". They sell used equipment. This gives you an opportunity to try different equipment without spending a fortune. If you don't like it, they buy it back so you don't lose a whole lot of money. Or if you can find a store that allows you to try it for 30 days and exchange it for a more expensive model, go that route by starting with the cheaper of the ones you like. Another option is to buy it used from a private party through the paper. These are just some options.
Good Luck.

Hi everyone. Just joined yesterday. Definitely can relate to this topic. It's been over a year for me. What you do in rehab is crucial and can be hard. water therapy is great. Once you get through rehab and water therapy, you will be surprise what you are capable of doing once you put your mind to it. I exercise on a recumberant bike now and can bike for up to one hour. This bike is a lot less strain on your knees than a regular bike or any other gym equipment and was recommend by my ortho and trainer. I lost 20 pounds the first month I got on it working up to 1 hour a day. It took me 2 weeks to work up to that hour but I did it.

Hi Everyone. New to your discussion, but I can relate to each and everyone of you. I had orthoscopic surgery 2 years ago for a torn maniscus, and it ended up removing all of the maniscus I had left, so I have been bone on bone for two years. I also have severe arthritis in the knee. I have taken a series of shots that were terribly expensive that were made from chicken cartlidge, didn't help at all, but I have found that the cortisone works for me anywhere from 3 to 6 mo. I am trying to put off the surgery until I loose at least 60lbs. to rehab afterwards will be easier. I have thus far lost 22lbs, and I think it has helped. But when it is going to rain nothing helps. LOL.....I do agree with one the messages here, and that it is all in the PT after the surgery. I too have seen people who did and did not follow instruction and there is a world of difference in the way they feel today. Those who did the rehab are in great shape and those who did not are just as bad as they ever were. Well just wanted to say hi and wish you all the best of luck with your aches and pains. God Bless you all!!!! Carolyn

| Morning, I do have muscles around my knee,he sewed them toghter so it is now the time to work them. I do about 5 differnt types of a work out that work just the ham strings, Quad muscles. I use a ball beween my back and wall and bend my knees as deep as I can go,but not over your toes. The ligaments, tentons were also cut. I had to learn how to walk normal as I for the last 4 years limped ,also my leg was bending out wards so my surgeon had to straighen my leg. Peggy
|
|
|
|
| I'm confused are you saying you no longer have muscle structur around your knee.. Does the knee move electronically or something? I thought you needed your hamstrings and quadriceps to move your leg am I mistaken?

| Hi all, in my case in getting the muscles stronger around the knee is a waste of time as they were cut durning my surgery. This coming Tue it will be 12 weeks{Aug 13} since my knee replacement,I am walking 20 min on the treadmill, bike 20 min, full roation has only been 3 weeks. I am walking normal and have a great bend. I will get the left knee done in the summer of 08.I have had a very easy time healing, maybe because I am 54. Peggy

i'm not trying to build the muscle around the knee cap....its the bigger ones around the knee and legs and thighs........i'm also doing strenght training for the last few months......all the people physio, drs etc.............all agree that this is the way to go especially if time allows............... and it adds to the weight loss...........if i didn't have the pool i would be unable to be active at all and by now instead of loosing weight i would probably packed on many more pounds than i want to consider..............so i'm ver thankful that i am able to get to the pool.................daily
|
|
|
|
| the pool is great therapy for your joints but you wouold have to work out in the pool for years to build the muscle you need to support your kneecap. You will need some kind of strength training eventually.

hi............i haven't had the surgery yet.....next monday....i'm having scopes to both knees, and the dr will see where we go from there............since the end of march i've been working in the pool to make things better for me post-op..........i started 3x/week x1 hr..........and am now doing 7days/week x 2hours............with this was also hoping for some weight loss and so far have lost 17-lbs.............the dr said every pound i loose will take 7 -lbs of pressure off the knees.............so if you start now just think of where you could be,when the surgery comes up......... i have found the pool to be wonderful with no after pain as with any other physical activities,my mobility is much better,i take less pain medication,i still walk with a cane on land ............if i could live in a pool ...........i would.............. there is a team here called "the knees"..........i have joined them .........perhaps you may find others there who may be supportive to these kind of problems.........they are very helpful and a great bunch of people............they are a small group....which makes it nice to get to know people..................good luck to you and hope this is of some help.............hugs to you..............lita

Hi. I have the knee problem and back pain also. I try walking, then the next day I can hardly get out of bed. I have been on pain pills forever it seems. I am seriously considering the knee replacement surgery. But I am afraid that as heavy as I am I will be down for a very long time. How long did it take for recovery?

the stationary bike has helped my knee tremendously I do squats with 200 pounds of weight which would be a prescription for knee injury, but I wear an inzer wrap, and when its put on properly it protects the knee well. I wear it only for the squats and seated squats, where I use 300 pounds of weights, and when I'm done with those I remove the wrap and do the rest of my exercises

| the trouble with joint pain and knee pain in particular is that if it hurts we favor it and it only gets worse. I you have a serious condition it is worthwhile to get a physical thereapist and get it strengthend, If you do nothing it only get worse

SwinginGrama I know about left knee pain, some days are worse then others, I find that using a cane when I can get away with it if I am going for short walks, but if I am going to walk around the stores or fair, I will use my crutches, not only have problems with both knees, but neck and back pain. But I try and get some kind of exercise in.

the pool is another good place to exercise.......at least for me ...........i feel no pain .........take less pain meds, and my muscles are getting stronger and am loosing weight at the same time..............after surgery,i'll be using the bike, right now too uncomfortable..........there is a team called"the knees"which i've joined and have found to be helpful..........you may find it also helpful..............good luck and hugs to you.............lita

| I have an articulated right leg injured many years ago. This is very hard on the knee becuase it isn't in the right position. Last summer it went out on me and I was on cruches for a month. Now that Ive gone back to exercising, I have found the stationary bike. The bike has strenthened my knee support muscles a lot. I now can do free weight squats and een though the knee caps shifts around I am able to do it and once in awhile I may use wraps for safety if my leg feels tired. I always warm up on the bike before doing any squats. If I don't warm up on the bike ( I have used the treadmill before), I can feel it and have pain. By using the bike first I don't have any pain. My legs used to ache at night in bed now since riding my bike and using the stationary bike I have no pain

I'm taking mobic & darvacet, also, lidoderm patches, when the dr. has samples. My insurance won't cover them.My hips bothered me more than my knees yesterday.I wanted to walk around the county fair----that lasted all of ten minutes.I just about got back to the car. I don't want cortizone shots,so,I don't know what they can do for me. It's my left knee that bothers me the most.No crutches,so far. So,it's bursitis in my hips & O.A. in my knees. Trudy

| I had scopioe surgery for repair at my heaviest which is quite different, as you know, from a knee replacement. Build your muscles to support your knees. I am not always in pain and hope not to have a replacement in the near future, but don't know if I'll be able to hold off forever.

I have had both knees replaced. I am 52 and had the first one done 3 years ago, and the second one 8 months later. It's not an easy thing to go through but it is so worth it! I was in pain all the time for years, and now I can be active again, with no pain! By the way I am looking for some weight loss buddies to keep in touch with. If anyone is interested, please pm me!

Thanks for the hope about knees. I have a torn cartilage as well, but have opted not to do surgery until I can take off weight. I am not sure I can stand the pain though---so, today, I started looking at sparkpeople--I picked up Prevention Magazine in the orthopod's office!! Just trying to get psyched about taking off this darned weight. I used to be a runner--and I still walk and garden--but stairs are bad, and my knee is really killing me. I am at 235 and need to get to 160. I am not sure I can hold out for surgery--did you have yours at your heaviest weight? Thanks for your info and support! Scoutsmom2 (Elise)

I had scope surgery for a torn maniscus (sp). Most of my pain is in my knee, but I walk, do elliptical, lift weights, and spinning classes. Do what you can without increasing pain. I have found that my knees hurt less since I've lost weight and with exercise that builds my muscles.
I know several people who have had knee replacements and they are no, finally pain free. Therapy after the replacement is the key. One person who did not do therapy has had nothing but trouble.
Good luck.

Hi, I had arthroscopic surgery to my right knee about 3 years ago and I really haven't felt any better. Now my left knee is starting to swell and become painful. I changed jobs from teaching special ed. to working as a school nurse which is a desk job primarily. Initially my pain got better, but now I'm starting to put weight on as I don't get a lot of exersice. The doctors told me 2 years ago that I need a total knee replacement, but I didn't want to go through that at my age. I'm 57 now and would rather wait until I lose weight as the healing and is much better thinner than with extra weight. I'm now starting to feel pain all over with any physcial activity I engage in. Even making dinner when I get off work. The only relief I get is water exercise, but I can't go to the gym everyday. I'm not sure why or if this is normal to feel like this. I can't be on my feet for long periods of time as I feel weak and start to ache all over. Very depressing!! Does anyone else have symptoms like I described? I'd like to hear from you if you do.
