SMBinsley, I'm sure you will enjoy your journey with SparkPeople - it's a great place to be. I am one of the 'older' ones, having been born in 1945 - but what's a couple of years amongst friends! Most of us here share the same problems with our weight and get great support and motivation along the way. If you have any problems - just ask - someone will be there to help.
Good luck and enjoy Sparks.

Hi! Folks! I'm the new kid on the block if you call being born in 1947 and reaching your 60th birthday on October 22nd new. I do! After all you're only as old as you feel. The good Lord has blessed me in so many ways in these many years. Of course life is no bed of roses, but with God in your path leading you in the right direction, how can you fail? GOD IS SO GOOD! AMEN!

As I embark on this new adventure of getting myself in control of my weight, and not letting my weight control me, I need all the support I can get. I want to get this excess weight off so I can live to see my grandchildren grow up and follow God's will for their lives. My grandchildren are my pride and joy. They are what keeps me young! I want to be able to have as much energy as they do so I can keep up with them.

So, if any of you would like to converse and give me the motivation I need to accomplish this I would be very grateful and I know God will bless you for it.

Hi Everyone
It's quite a while since I posted as we have been on vacation in the UK. My healthy eating plan went out of the window I'm afraid, but I certainly don't feel as well with the change in my diet and I am determined to get back on track from now. My sunflower has definitely wilted during the past couple of weeks.
Hope all is well with all of you.

Happy Birthday Bonniebee and congrats on the weigh-in!

I am Tracy. Born August 31, 1947.

After 41 years of addiction, I quit smoking 53 weeks ago! ...

And have gained a pound a week every week since.

A leg injury prevented me from walking and now the extra weight is playing havoc on my knees and hips (bursitis) I really, really have to do something to turn the metabolism ON again!

The aches and pains and hobbling make me feel so old - and 60 is NOT old!

Welcome Barbhands,
I was off with the triplets for a couple of days and just returned to work today. It starting to warm up in So. Calif. My aunt from Las Vegas was in town for my parents 63rd anniversary. Its over 100 in Vegas and she thought it was beautiful here. I was opening windows and turning on fans to cool off. I tend to become a slug when its hot….this is not good. If I take all the quilts from my bed it will get cold again. I’m rambling, must be time to go home. Have a great evening. Hugs, Joy

Hi Everyone!

The weather isn't so good here in Toronto today, so I settled down this afternoon (after exercise!) to watch a movie. DH is helping DS work on his basement today.

We don't have grandkids yet either - but keep hoping. Instead we are 'grandparents' to our friend's little girl, as her Mom lives in Ireland.

Am thinking I will put a nice homey casserole in to cook for dinner this evening - it's that kind of weather.

Have a good evening everyone,
Carole

Thanks to all of you for the wonderful "welcome" messages!!! So glad that I finally got the nerve to join in on the message boards. Hopefully this is just what I need to keep me motivated. I mean I sure wouldn't want y'all to know that I was gaining instead of going in the right direction.

I am sooo jealous of SWEETKNEES being the grandmother of triplets!!! I have yet to become a "real" grandmother but I claim a wonderful six-year old as my grandchild. She is the daughter of one of my daughter's best friends and she calls me Ms. Mommy -- guess that's the next best thing until I get to have my own.

Wishing all of us "almost 60" people the best of luck on our journey this next week!!

Hi Everyone and MARRIN

Hope you have all had a good day. My exercise has flagged a bit today, but have stuck to my calorie allowance. DH and I had a day out in the country on Wednesday and I did have a lot of carb, sugar and more carb!! I think the sugar-fest kicked in yesterday as I felt rather snacky and prepared some nibbles for DH and myself. Minutes later they were gone and DH hadn't had any! So, had to make up for it today.

That's the joy of SP, there is always motivation and someone to pick you up if you need it, and someone to listen to your groans if you need to let off steam! So MARRIN, stick with us and you will get where you want to be!

Have a good evening everyone,
Carole

Well done to those who have lost lbs this week. My WID is tomorrow - so will wait and see! Have convinced DH that I need a cup of coffee in bed in the morning in order to get my metabolism working! LOL.

It's a glorious day here in Toronto - I woke early so went for a walk at 7am, together with my pedometer and MP3, to start the day right. Am not always that enthusiastic! Having my hair done later so that should help things along a bit - always makes you feel better!

Have a great day everyone.

Linda - That is a tremendous loss - well done! Toronto is hot and sunny today, and it's so welcome after such a long spell of cold and rainy weather. Spring is really late here this year. We have a condo downtown with a good view of the CN Tower and Lake Ontario, but it's not the same as living out in the country. I was brought up in small town in the UK and you can imagine what a contrast this is. I really like it here though - everything is so convenient.

Hope your day has been a good one.

Hello from So. Calif.
We finally got some rain yesterday. but not even an inch. If you have any to spare, please send it our way. I’ve been with SP for a while, but just started to post on the boards. I recommend SP to so many people, but I think I need to lose lots more before I can inspire anyone else to join. I may not lose every week, but I really feel so much better and have more energy. Thanks to all of you and the articles, I remain dedicated to keep active and not munch on junk. Have a great weekend.

I really enjoy it. It (almost) makes dieting a pleasure!! Actually, I now try not to think in terms of 'diet' and more a healthy way to eat - and I certainly don't go hungry.

Hi, The weather is great here in Toronto today - at last! Hopefully winter is finally over and we can look forward to some warmer weather. At least then you feel more like eating lighter food - or at least I do. Have had quite a good day. I managed to do my cardio and have tracked my meals. I find the tracker really useful as you can keep an eye on the nutrients as well as the calories.

Hope you have had a good day too.

Hi Everyone - It's nice to see a few folks joining in here. I've lost 6# with SP so far (in 4 weeks) and my WID is Wednesday, so am hoping for a good result then. I've decided, after this weekend, that I need to cut back on my sodium intake. It has been quite high and I think that results in a lot of fluid retention. Exercise will help with fluid too, of course, but my main hobby is walking and I am currently unable to do as much of that as I wish because of a problem with a nerve in my foot. I have been to see the doctor and had an x-ray and ultra sound and am now waiting for the result. Hopefully it can be sorted out.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Thank you for the information on Nutrisystems, I have tried on my own and have not been able to control the portion size and I feel this way the only thing I will have to be concerned with will be the fruits and veggies that I buy, the cost to me will be far less than what I spend in one month for food anyway so that will be a savings for me...I feel I can retain the loss once I get to where I want to be just by continuing with what I have learned with the portion size and I will continue on the exercise that I have already started...those who put the weight back on go back to their old ways of eating once they reach their goals, but I do not plan on ever going back to my old habits...
I am trying to look at this as a way to control my problem area...I have come way to far to let this take me back up to where I was as far as health goes...

I am very hopeful this is my answer to a healthy lifestyle...not looking for fast results just a new healthy life.

Patsy: I've known about a half dozen individuals, men and women, who have used the Nutrisystem method and had great success. They lost the weight they wanted in a short period of time. However, the success was short-lived as all of these people regained the lost pounds plus more. Nutrisystem can get the weight off, but they don't teach you how to make life style changes that can have lasting effects. Slow steady weight loss is healthier than the Nutrisystem plan. Exercise and life style eating habit changes are what give us the most long-lasting weight loss effects. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but the cost and the long-term results of Nutrisystem have not proven to be great.

Hi...I was born in June 1945 and I too feel the effect of being overweight and over 60..I am trying to lose the excess lbs and get healthy before some health problem arise that can not be reversed..I have a bad back and my knees hurt at times..so I know it is because of the extra lbs that I carry. Will be starting the Nutrisystem program in a couple of days so I am excited to do that. Looking into the future with success..

Good morning! I was born Nov. 1947 -- a very good year, right? I understand the "getting older/body going down hill" comment. About a year or so ago, I felt like something was taking over my body and causing it to ache. What a bummer...but guess it beats "6 feet under."
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about a year ago -- had really been feeling AWFUL, and then put on about 15 additional pounds. I'm on medication but the pounds aren't going away. I hope to get serious (again) about my cardio and workouts and hope to see some weight loss and body toning by midsummer. I don't expect the weight to be gone until the end of summer. I want it to drop off slowly so it stays off.
What's your geographical location? I'm in Minnesota. Have a good week. Hope to hear from you,
Mothercee

Hi Judy and Shirley - I hope it's ok if I join in here. I am a Brit, now living in Toronto - DH and I have been here for about 11 years now. We have a son here and a daughter in the UK. I was born in April 1945 - I hope that qualifies me for a 1947 group.

I have been yo-yo dieting for as long as I can remember, and was thankful to find SP. For the first time I feel as if I am really going to do this thing. I have been with Sparks for about 4 weeks and have made a good start. I would like to get to my goal weight by the middle of June. I really enjoy the support and motivation that you receive on SP - it is such a help to be in contact with others who understand the problems we face.

I look forward to joining in here.
