Safe4sue,
Hey, I have exercised religiously for over 45 years. Aerobics, walking, biking, weights, you name it and I did it. I had to accept that my basic body type would never change (pear). I did manage to keep very toned and firm, better than some my age. Exercise will definitely tone and maintain your feminine figure. Look at it this way, in South America our figure type is revered!

I know what you mean when you say that you see your mom's figure when you look in the mirror. I am 5'8" and my mother was 5'1" but my lumpy thighs and backside definitely look familiar! I am hoping for the best, but I don't expect my increased exercising and activity to do miracles. It HAS to be better than what I have been doing the last few years...which is nothing. Sue

We seem to have much in common. Thanks for the message. I just get so frustrated with the weight gain even though I "seem" to be making all the right moves. I don't think that I kid myself about my nutrition and exercise. I have been stable for the last three years, but it's a tricky balancing act. I have to admit that my heredity has kicked in since I see my Mom's figure every time I look in the mirror! I do stay positive, though, because my health and vitality are great. Sparkpeople is a really good website, and I am intrigued by the daily food tables. I'll just keep plugging along.

Welcome, Panage! I can see how you might be confused. I didn't consider the changes that were to come as I aged (66), even though I saw John Travolta on TV and in many movies...then and now. You, however, must be ahead of many of us in this "battle" if you have been active and exercising frequently for over 45 yrs. Though I am relatively new to this website and all it has to offer, I am almost certain you can find answers to your questions and the help that you need here. I am impressed so far with what I have found and plan to continue to improve my use of its many features. I hope you are able to find what you need, too. I would be glad to give emotional support if you ever want it. Good luck!! Sue

welcome to Spark! been here since Feb. and have lost about 16 lbs total...not a lot but I'm happy and still losing. it's a great site and there are lots of great people to help you along the way. try to just play around with the site and see what all there is, maybe a little investigation each day...there really is a lot to see and read and do. getting your plan in place, both the nutrition and the exercise is KEY! can't lose if you're only doing one and not the other. any time you have a question, just post it...you won't have to wait very long for someone to help you out. again....

Welcome to the spark!
I have only been sparking for a few weeks and it has taken that long to really get used to the site and all it has to offer. I think it's wonderful and I have found the articles a tremendous help.
Try not to get discouraged, one day at a time and continue to monitor your food each day. I find that having to be accountable to my nutrition page and total calories for the day has helped me as well.
Good luck!

Hi all who are over 50. I hit 65 this year, and while I have always been blessed with energy, good health and youthful ambitions, am now struggling mightily with food angst. I exercise at least five times a week, have for over 45 years, eat healthy and stay really active, but the weight has crept up. I get really discouraged when I see the number on the scale, and know that every bite I take now is like an enemy. I am giving this site a try, and hope that I can figure out what I need to do to lose some weight. I sure needed to vent on this topic.
