Hi Rebecca, I was tested years ago for allergies and treated. I have never tried a Naturopath or Bio-Energetic test. I am going to be re-tested for my allergies. I did see an accupuncturist and that did help for awhile. I am glad what you did worked for you. Not very many people with migraines are so lucky.

I never heard of hope in a can. What is that. Glad to hear that what ever your sister-in-law told you is helping you. It is not the best thing in the world to get migraines. Good-luck with the hope in a can.

I guess you are the luckiest man in the world never to have a headache or a migraine. I hope you never get one.

I have not been on here for quite some time.. sorry friends!!

I had migraines so severe I was in bed often in the dark with nausea. I was missing out on my son's life and time with himand my husband.. That was 11 months ago! Now since then I have not had one migraine! I was blessed when my sister in law, also suffered from migraines and seizures introduced me to an amazing nutrition product!! Ever heard of hope in a can??!! I found it!

Lucky indeed to be healthy and painfree Christopherd. Health is wealth!
DONNAM07, wow that is a sad history. I wonder if you have explored allergy related causes.
After visiting a Naturopathy, doing Bio-Energetic test, and changing my diet I did find complete cure to a severe cat allergy and numerous other complaints. Now I do the Bio-Energetic testing regularly and am happy to say I feel my health is robust.
I hope you find resolve.

Just want to let you know that I have had migraines since I was a little kid and I am 53 yrs old now. I used to get them pretty bad they would last as long as 2 weeks on one side of my head I would have a day off and then it would be on the other side of my head for 2 more weeks. It took me a long time to find a doctor that could put me on the right combination of medications to take everyday. Now that I am getting older I don't get them as often. They say once you go threw the cahnge they will go away. We sill see if that happens. The medication that worked for me the best once I got the migraine was Zomig. If that didn't work then I would have to go to sumitriptan which is an injection that you give to yourself. Once I took that the migraine would go away in 20 minutes. Every once and awhile nothing would work and my husband would have to bring me to the Hospital so they could put me on an IV and give me injections for the pain and for vomiting. Which meant I would be in the hospital for at least 6 to 8 hours. Because they had to keep an eye on me while they kept giving the shots until the migraine would go away. The bad thing for me was I never got any warning. I could just wake up with it at 4 in the morning. So I know what you are going threw. Good LUck

Just thought I would bump up this thread to see how everyone is doing. So how are you all doing?
I have been episode free since taking the potassium. I am also tracking to see I stay in the range as I have seen warnings about too much.

Bless you and I'll keep you in my prayers for a successful outcome. The coiling is a new proceedure and when able to be done elimanates many post operative problems. Sometimes the seizures are the result of the surgery and patients are placed on precaution medications. After my open crainiotomy to repare a very large aneurysm, I took phenobarbital for about 6 months and then tapered off with the OK of the neurosurgeon and had not other effects. But just know prayers are with you for the best possible outcome that you can have. Please let us know how all goes for you....Maj, IAMAWINNER66

I am one of the blessed,I went to the emergency with a severe headache that wouldn't quit!Had it three days. Finally I had my daughter take me to the emergency room.
At the followup appointment with my family Doctor, she asked me how was I doing since that episode,I responded by saying"haven't had one since!
She requested i go Have an MRI anyway to make sure there was nothing wrong.
Well to make this short. She received the results the next day and called me to her office STAT!
It was then I found out that I had two Aneurysms.
1.)11x5 and the other a 4 . They are inside the brain,in the depths of the ocean,so to speak.
Needless to say I was terrefied.I have an older sister that had an aneurysm explode on her 15 yrs ago,and in November 2005 was diagnosed with two more.
At that time she was able to have one Coiled but still waits to see what they want to do about the other. You see she has seizures do to the one 15 years ago.So she can only take a baby step at a time.
Funny thing is That I have had epilepsy all my life and they stopped about 15 years ago.Turns out now I too have Aneurysms...Thank God for technology though, they caught mine in time and my coiling is being done this month on the 17th.I have faith that things will be just fine.I have some of the best doctors in San Diego.I trust in them and God to guide them each and every stepp of the way!

I get a headache from smells as well. Perfum and cigars are realy bad. I get the tooth ache thing as well. Can't stand noise or smells or light when I get a bad one. I have tried some meds to prevent them and found one that works when I feel one coming on. It is Imitrex. I know how people treat you when you have a migraine. I went in for a shot for one and was put in a bed next to a screaming baby. The nurse said it was a quiet corner. Ha! When she gave me the shot she jabbed it in so hard I had a sore but for months after. She actualy wound but and thrust it in with a grunt. The next time I got her it was for a bad back and she treated me different and could not have shown more care and comfort. I hate headaches. My father got them all the time. Now my daughter and son get them and my grandson as well. I have only had one that was so bad that I wanted to bang my head against the wall to make it stop. It took 3 percadans and two days in bed to knock that one out. I have heard Botox works but I am not that bad anymore. It only takes 3 extra strength Tylonals SP. to kill it now, and sometimes a T3.

I get migraines also and am not sure how long I have been having them. I don't get the extremely bad pain either, but more of the sinus headache type of symptoms, sometimes with aching teeth also. I sometimes get an aura before my headache starts - sometimes just a bright light streaking across my vision, sometimes a whole bunch of "floaters" in my vision that make it hard to see. I have nausea sometimes, but not always and also have difficulty coming up with words when I have a migraine. I have tried many different migraine meds that either don't work or make me feel sicker than the migraine. We are trying a new one now, which seems to be working so far. When I get a migraine, it sometimes lasts for days and I often get them at least once a week, but then can go for a few weeks without one. Some of the things that I find that seem to trigger migraines for me are lack of sleep, change in weather (storms), getting my period - and just recently I've gotten a really bad migraine twice after sampling a new perfume. It's interesting to read other people's experiences with migraines. Sometimes I feel that people who have never had one think it's "all in your head" - which it is, but not in the way they think!!

Correction to my first post...I take two 99mg of potassium citrate (not mcg).

I have only been taking the potassium a couple of months and started with one 99mg capsule and then when I discussed this with my Naturopath he suggest that two would be the right amount.

I was having almost weekly episodes before taking the potassium. I fortunately never had much pain either but definitely had the discomfort of feeling anxious and out of balance. It was the sort of anxiety that made me feel like sleeping to 'reset' my body. I have found that, for me, sleep is the best time for me to heal from anything.

I am most interested to hear what your Doctor says as the MD's I talked with (including an optometrist) did not seem to know of any 'cure'.

Hope the potassium works for you and if you feel like that is risky try eating a banana next time you have an episode and see if it stops it for you too. I would love to hear if it works for you.
(The only other person I know who has this is an epilectic and so there may be other reasons for his episodes....or?)

Thanks for the information REBCCA. I have never had the auras explained that way before. What you describe is EXACTLY what I see.
I will try the potassium, after mentioning it to my doctor, of course. But I don't know any reasons why I shouldn't give it a try. How long have you been taking it, and how soon did you notice a difference?
I guess I should consider myself fortunate that I don't get much pain. My symptoms can be better described as 'discomfort', but unpleasant nonetheless.
Thanks again,
Irene

I had these off and on for years, fortunately the ones with pain were usually 'cured' with simple aspirin. I found that Peanut Butter or a banana would arrest the development of the Scintillating scotomas but were undesirable because of the high calories and sugars. I have recently found that taking two 99mgtablets of potassium (found at health food stores) daily has prevented any episodes so far. Here is the definition/description of my symptoms.

Scintillating scotomas often are a symptom of migraine headaches...some with the pain and some without pain. A scintillating scotoma, also called a fortification (because of its resemblance to a medieval fortified town as viewed from above) spectrum or teichopsia (seeing fortifications), is present in about 10% of cases [of people with migraine auras]. The scotoma, which is frequently semicircular or horseshoe shaped, usually begins in the center of the visual field and then slowly extends laterally. The scotomatous arc or band is a shimmering or glittering, bright, zigzag border. Most visual auras consist of flickering, colored or uncolored, unilateral or bilateral zigzag lines or patterns, semicircular or arcuate patterns, wavy lines, or irregular patterns.

Thanks for your input IAMAWINNER66. I am due for a physical soon, so I will run that by my doctor.
What a horrible experience for you and your family.
I'm glad they caught you in time.
You gave us lots to think about.

Very interesting. I get them also and have had some different reactions in ER. I have not had to go in for a while but used to get sick and the whole bit. When I get a mild one that lasts for days I get cravings and think if I could just find the right food it will go away. No such luck. I just take T3s and go to bed. I will keep your advise in mind. THank-you.

Hi ladies,
I read with interest your experiences with migranes and wanted to jump in. If I'm out of line I apologize.

I am a nurse and for years was plagued with migraines. There were almost indescribable, the pain was so severe. Then I heard a neurologist lecture and he said that anyone who has the second migraine should have an angiogram. I chuckled and said to my self, "yeh sure", and just ignored the suggestion.

I began to correlate the time of the headaches to hormonal changes preceeding the onset of my periods and once, having one so severe I went to the ER where I worked. They started me on ergotrate and in three days, my period began and the headache finally subsided. I found that medicine didn't do much to eleviate the pain before my period began.

Then after finishing a gruelling course of study and beginning my own law practice. I awoke one day and was talking on the phone to a client. I felt as if someone struck me in the side of the head with a baseball bat. I was then overcome with the horrible sensation that I was going to die. My mother had died of an aneurysm at the age of 29 and I could recall her suffereing with headaches. Well, my husband arranged for an ambulance to come to get me and take me to the hospital and fortunately for me the doctor in the ER recognized the complaint of " the worse headache of my life" and obtained cat scans and got me a neurosurgeon. The next morning I went to surgery for 13 hours to repair a ruptured aneurysm.

Now I don't mean to scare anyone but please do take the pain serious and don't let the doctors blow off your complaint. The technology we have today can locate aneurysms before they rupture and put in stents (like they do for coronary arteries) and prevent a serious complication and save a life.

Thanks ladies, for your time and the space to put in my two cents. iamawinner 66

It's comforting to know that someone else experiences what I do, although I feel bad for both you and your daughter.
I have also had bright lights trigger an aura, in a store, once in my bathroom, and one very bright, sunny winter's day when the sun was reflecting off the snow. I had to pull my car onto the side of the road and sit for 1/2 an hour until I could see properly again.
Every once in a while a new symptom will occur, for example, twice within a few weeks I had an episode where I was unable to form my words for a few minutes - talk about scary. I knew in my head what I was trying to say, but it wouldn't come out right.
I have read lots of articles, and at one time I obtained some literature from the Ontario Migraine Foundation. Apparently, migraines are considered a form of epilepsy. That could explain why your daughter 'blanked out' when she was 13. Almost like a mini seizure. How frightening that must have been for you all.
I also have a sensitivity to odors, when I have one. Perfume, pot-pourri,anything with an artificial smell.
I have tried to figure out if it is food related, because I usually get an upset stomach along with it, and after a few visits to the bathroom, the nausea will go away. But there are times when I can eat all the 'wrong' combinations - cheese, chocolate, garlic etc. and nothing happens. Then one time I will have just one or two of those things and I get one.
I have only ever tried an actual migraine medication once, years ago, but it was the type that you had to take at the first sign, and I would wake up with one and it was already too late.
In recent years I tried Feverfew herbal supplements. I still had a migraine occasionally, so I figured it wasn't working and stopped taking it.
The whole condition has a personality all it's own, and it varies so much from person to person. Thank you for sharing yours and your daughter's experience with me.

My daughter also had migraines with auras. She would lose half her vision, and get nausea with light sensitivity. One time she just got this blank look on her face and would not answer when her name was spoken. When her dad touched her she just collapsed. It was quite scarey as she was only about 13 at the time. She had these episodes quite often and nothing seemed to help. I finally took her to a bio-feedback doctor who taught her relaxation techniques which helped and she used nightly for awhile. It seemed when we went into department stores with a lot of florescent lighting it would trigger an episode. She is now 33 years old and hasn't had this type of migraine in years. She now gets the head banging, nausea type when she is under a lot of stress but not too often. Took us forever to find out what it was. It was finally diagnosed by an optometrist when she went in for her eye exam. They began so suddenly I was frantic because I just knew it was something terrible. Migraines are terrible (I have them too) but my imagination had gone wild! Thanks for posting about them. Hopefully someone else will read it not have to go through what I did to find out it was migraines.

I don't recall when I had my first 'migraine', because I probably thought it was just a headache. The one that scared me into finding out what was happening came when I was 22.
I am a hairstylist, and I was working on a client and looking in the mirror when suddenly part of my vision went black (about half of the mirror)and my right arm got really weak and I dropped the blow-dryer.I thought I was having a stroke - at 22!!!
I made a doctor's appointment and was sent for an EEG (electro-encephalagram) or brain scan, and was told I have 'classic'migraine.
Now for those of you who have full-blown, head-banging pain, my heart goes out to you. Strangely, I do NOT.
I get aura (flashing lights), which is my first indication that something is happening, nausea, a sensation similar to sinus pain, around my eyes and nose. This usually lasts about 3 or 4 hours, and after it all passes, I feel weak and drained for about 24 hours.
I used to get them about every 2 months, and they were and still are, brought on by too much stress, too much of the wrong foods, too little sleep and just generally letting my body get totally out of balance.I don't get them as often now, but when I do, I am not surprised by them.
I'm interested in finding anyone else who gets aura, and knowing what triggers other people's migraines.
Misery loves company, they say!! lol
