Penny, It looks like we all pretty much grew up with similar backgrounds. There was pop and chips in our house but it was for Dad to take in his lunch -- not for us kids to eat. Besides, I was too busy playing to worry about food in those days. I got interested in food much later. I think when I started learning to cook is when my interest picked up.

When we were kids we did not really look so much as food as snacks, I think kids today eat more snacks than meals actually!! If we had dessert it was with a meal. Sometimes the neighbors would bring us candy bars. I used to like sunflower seeds and pretzels and we did get to pick out penny candy when we went to the store with my dad. For a nickel or a dime you got quite a bit and we knew to make it last a week until we went again too. We rarely ever had soda pop, only if someone took us out to eat which was rare too. We popped popcorn that was one of our favorites, rarely had any chips, but we had a lot ice cream. I grew up on a dairy farm and we always had almost all the dairy products we wanted. To this day ice cream is one of those comfort foods to me and one I consider a treat because it really was one back when we were kids.

I do remember the good old days....when I was a kid we ate fast food maybe once a year as a treat. Nowadays, kids eat there several times a week. They wonder why childhood obesity is an epidemic ?????

Hi Willows and all, when I was young, we ate whatever was put in front of us. Children where starving somewhere and if you didn't eat your food it somehow affected them. I often wonder with my grandchildren who do not like anything if they would respond as we did to that. I tried it and they felt at liberty to say what we had wondered so many times those 55 years ago, why don't you send it to them. Win some, lose some!!! Ain't life grand.

Oh well, it sounds like she is not doing too bad then. I wish I'd have been a little more "picky" when I was a kid and maybe I wouldn't have this weight problem now. LOL Know what I mean?

I do remember hiding things in a piece of bread and then throwing it away. I don't remember what it was exactly. I know my family used to serve things like tongue, brains, and heart and I didn't like them.
That's probably what it was.

Good Morning, Stella

That little girl has a way with getting what she wants with her Mom and Dad. Daughter was real strict with her oldest(21) and then 10 years later decides to have 2 more. These two are a bit spoiled.

In Carlys defense, she does eat fruit, loves oranges, salad, swiss cheese. She isn't skinny anymore like she was when she was littler(she is 12 now). She eats good, when it is something she prefers.

I just hate to see anyone throw their food away, I guess. Maybe she won't have a weight problem, either, who knows. Her Mom never has.

Aunt Bee, I like your picture, I put one of me up, from a few years ago, quite a few....LOL

Aunt Bee, A grocery store? That would have been dangerous for me. You grew up with lots of choices, didn't you? WE had soda pop in the house too but it was for my dad. We weren't supposed to drink it.

Kids always need a snack when they get home from school. It can be a healthy snack though and I think you are right in suggesting a sandwich. It could have cheese and veggies on it and it could be a whole grain bread. Would she eat that? Also, a nice bowl of soup would be a good idea -- or string cheese, or fruit. Fruit is my favorite -- always has been but you can't make some kids eat it at all. I hope the mother will take charge and provide healthy choices for the little girl.

I went to a Grandparent day at GD school. I took my own lunch as I figured it would be junk. Right...Nachos with melted cheese and some hamburger stuff, pears, and a cinnamon bun. She hardly ate any of it, threw it away, as usual. Then she wants snacks when she gets home from school. My daughter lets her. I told her to make her eat a half of a sandwich instead.

Alwasys had soda pop in the house.
I grew up in a grosery store, back in Arkansas until I was 9 years old. So I could get what I wanted, if I ask. They didn't allow me to have to much junk..
Wanted me to eat good because I was under weight. Was a 1 pound 11 ounces at birth.

Aunt Bee

We served our self at the table, learned not to put to much in the plate because we had to eat what we took.

No, I didn't have much junk food as a kid and, like you, we ate what we got without picking or complaining. dinner was what it was and that was it -- no choices and if you didn't eat it when it was served you did without. I think that settles the problem of picky kids. Most kids today know that if they don't eat their oatmeal, they can have chocolate in a little while. We didn't have much and with a big family, it gets eaten -- no leftovers. Yes, I ate liver. I fed liver to my kids too and they ate it and liked it. They still talk about eating liver and liking it. They only like it the way I made it though and won't eat it any other way. I was a Weight Watcher back then and we had to have liver once a week. I don't eat it now though. Don't eat chicken livers either. I prefer the drumstick.

Do you remember ever picking at your food? I don't.

We had no snacks, so were hungry by the time mealtimes came. I even ate LIVER!!!! I remember some of our snacks were...green apples off of the trees outside, anything we wanted to pick from the garden, raw potatoes with salt on them..We got a handful of candy once every two weeks, when Ma went shopping. Don't remember any potato chips. We did walk to the rootbeer stand and get rootbeer and icecream once in a great while.

We took our lunches to school, and they were always bologna sandwiches and a banana.

Ma baked alot, and we had cakes and cookies and pies with our meals. We had a big family, so things didn't sit around too long.

Nowadays the cupboards are full of snacks(except at my house), and the kids eat that, and pick at their meals, it seems.I can't keep snacks, or I would eat them and not eat the things that are good for me..

Did you have junk food as kids??
