I have about 12 at one feeder from sun up to sun down. I have two kitties too, but only one that really has a thing about the birds. This feeder is attached to my picture window in my livingroom and the young cat goes nuts trying to get to them, then he goes outdoors and loses interest because the other birds are more enticing to him.

Yes, I do find that the older I get, the harder the weight seems to come off.

I see you like birds. We have hummingbirds right outside our window everyday. Entertains hubby and self as well as the 2 cats. It used to be a lot easier to lose weight than it is now. Do you find that?

Hi, I'm Sandee and have been a member of Spark People for about 7 days now. I just turned 57 and have about 25 lbs to lose (again). I was a member of WW for 3 years and originally lost 60 lbs in 9 mos. I like SparkPeople.com and lost 1 lb in 4 days on this system. I think I actually like it better than WW.

Ravenfeather,
I just joined Sparkpeople and this group. I'm 62 and have about 40 pounds to leave somewhere where I'll never be able to find it again. I went on a cruise this winter, there were "LOTS" of people there who needed to lose a lot more weight than you and I do.

I'm 55 and joined yesterday. Gained almost 30 lbs after I quit smoking last year and looking forward to losing it.

I listen to books on tape during work-outs. They're entertaining and a wonderful way to help pass the time.

Willows, Congratulations on your two grandsons graduating. It was so fun seeing Casey graduate!! He is such a good person -- very polite -- very considerate -- very motivated -- quite serious (but not too much :)). He will be attending FSU. I put a picture on my sparkpage of him if you want to see it.

My Mom will be 70 years young on the 30th of May. We had her party a little early...a limo would have been a great idea!! Well....she came up from Wheatridge to Greeley, so it would have been an expensive idea!! I am sooooo glad that you are back Stella! How was graduation?

Gotta run....my brother in-law died a couple of days ago and we are getting ready to talk to some of his family!

Wow! Congratulations Pagosh!! It is such a privilege to have you on this board. It is absolutely wonderful that you, at your wonderful age, are still improving yourself. You will soon be better than perfect!! LOL I, also, think it is wonderful that you are an Internet surfer. Many people your age are afraid to touch a computer. I even know may at MY age that are afraid to touch one and I am "only" 68. LOL Oh boy, does that feel good to be able to say "only!" LOL Welcome Pagosh!! You go girl!!!

I haven't read all the posts but no youa re not the oldest At 79 I have you beat by 6 years. Best part of being 79: being around, being with young people in family.

Hardest part: loss of energy, aches and stiff joints.

All life is a compromise, so I think I am lucky to be here, all 183 pounds of me, and still interested in improving myself. Life is a cabaret, so they say.

Oh how wonderful, Lori!! I know she was a happy young lady that day. How old was she on her birthday? I don't know how you pulled that off either. I didn't even try to make my mom's 80th party a secret. I just told her that we were having a party for her and she wanted to know what she'd have to do fo it. When I told her she didn't have to do a thing, she was willing. We even hired a limo to bring her to the party and she was more concerned with the color of the limo. She didn't want it to be black because she lived in a senior citizen's high rise and a black limo would tell the neighbors that someone had died and she didn't want that. LOL

Good for you, Lori. I know you made her very happy!!

YAY!! We did it! We managed to plan this party for months and keep it a secret from my Mom! When she and my step-dad pulled up into the driveway and saw all of us standing there yelling "Happy Birthday" she threw her hand over her mouth and burst into tears! It felt really good to make my Mom cry!! LOL! She had a great time visiting with family and friends...she was queen for the day! I had my kids and my niece wait on everyone and make sure that they had everything they needed! ( They even babysat for the little ones) It was Grandma's day and I made sure that they all knew it! We had balloons, streamers, food, 2 huge carrot cakes and chocolate cake. We grilled and laughed and visited and had a GREAT time!!

THANK GODNESS THAT'S OVER!!

Back to dieting and working out!

Thanks for listening!

Hi Paddylu! Thanks!
Today is the party!!! I am going to be kind of relieved when it is over!! LOL..
It is only 8:00 in the morning and already 67! It is going to be about 90 today! It has been really really dry this year and the yards show it! Some people have just given up watering all together! UGH!

I have been planning this party for months. Everyone told me that I would never pull it off as a surprise! I think I did it! (Unless, she knows and is just being quiet)! Her birthday is actually the 30th...so we decided a little early would help to keep it a secret!YAY!!!

Well...got to get to moving! You all have a GREAT DAY!!

It has been REALLY hot!! I am having a surprize party for my Mom Sunday...and my brother talked me out of a hall. So....we are doing it here in Greeley at my house, and I told him that he had better just really hope it doesn't rain or he is in deep trouble!! I invited about 40 people!! I am also worried about the heat!!

You be safe on your trip..and we will talk when you get back!

If anyone wonders what happened to "old Ellie". I joined the prevention walkers plan and have done quite well on it. I am now walking 5 miles per day 5 days per week and have now started a weight program twice a week. (very light weight that is) I have been paying Prevention 5.95 a month and really like the program but after working on this the last month I realize I get all the great benefits from Sparks free. Any way "I am Back" with Sparks and happy to be here.

I have discovered that the tapes are useful also while jumping on my mini trampoline - rebounding, it is called. Anything that makes me more consistent at my exercise program is helpful to me. And if I enjoy it, I wll be more consistent. A good book on tape will help make me anxious to "get busy."

Hi:
I just signed up for a books on tape club. Years ago I walked and listened to books, so I am hoping I will enjoy it again and it will encourage me to walk daily. It is quite rocky and uneven where I walk, so I must pay attention to where I am going, but I am going to get into the habit!
Thanks for each one of you that take the time to respond to these posting. I love reading about you and your lives.

Hi: This is my first posting on this forum. I am 58 and trying to lose 20 or so pounds. It is much harder right now. I am healthy but I feel better thinner. I have a hard time walking because I live on a ranch and it is very rocky and mountainous around me. But on the other hand, it is beautiful and I have so much to be grateful for. I am thrilled with this site and I enjoy reading all of your messages. Everyone of you are an inspiration to me. Thanks.

Welcome 080537!! Some of us here have a few more than 20 to lose unfortunately! You can do it..this site is a great motivator! There is also a group on Spark Challenges where everyone writes down their miles walked for the day! The Mile Club-April...it is great! However, I have a hard time keeping up with some! Right Kath!!!

Young kids make every day special! Right now I have no grandkids, but hopefully some day. I told all of my kids to please get their degrees before they have little ones! Hopefully, I won't have to wait tooooo long!!

Sounds like a great Easter Lori and Stella. Isn't it amazing that what makes the day for us is exactly what was so much fun when our children were little.

I had a ball filling plastic eggs with candy, prizes and some change for my 7 grandkids. We had so much fun all day together. I just love it.

Weather here in Wisconsin is great right now......58 degrees and sunny with a breeze. It's beautiful. ....kath

What a sweet Grandma you are!!! It sounds like alot of work, but your Grandkids will remember the day forever!!

We were going to have a grilled dinner here for just my kids ( my mom has been sick), but my niece (she is up at school here too) called to let me know her dad would be in town. So, they came for dinner and then a few of my kid's friends stopped in! It was a pleasant surprize to have everyone here! I love to entertain! No easter egg hunts here as all of my kids are grown, however, my soon to be 20 year old did inform me he would like an Easter basket! So, I got him and my daughter one, but I made them hunt for them in the morning!!!LOL Brought back memories!!

It is great hearing from you! Keep in touch, and don't let that old wind blow you away!!!

You and me both, Lori. It was a very busy weekend. I had my three youngest grandsons (7 y/o twins and a 10 y/o) and their 16 y/o sister at my house from Friday till late Sunday and then I drove them home to Granby. (Round trip which is a 4 hour drive. I fed 12 people Easter dinner, had a cookie decorating contest, a puzzle contest, an egg hunt with 9 1/2 dozen eggs ( which I colored or filled most of them myself, (I didn't have to hide them - got someone else to do that). I cleaned house before the kids came and spent all weekend nagging the kids to keep their things in one place. So . . . all I am trying to say is that I am wiped out today. I did do a lot of yard work this morning. I watered and fertilized the lawn. I also did more clean up in the house that didn't get done yesterday.

I think if he wants a small town, he'll have to get away from I-25 quite a ways. There are small towns that are not growing but not close to I-25. And you'd have to get away from the mountains. There are small towns out on the eastern plains. There's lots of room in Wyoming, as well. When DD#1 lived in SD, I traveled through Wyoming a lot and you can drive for miles and see nothing but grass -- Once in a while an antelope or an eagle. Most of the towns, in Wyoming, are small but Wyoming, as a whole, is growing too. Torrington is a nice little town, I think.

Stella, your grandkids are really cute! So are the kids you take care of! I have no grandchildren yet (that is okay) butI really look forward to having them! My kids are still all in college, so no hurry! (I tell myself)

I am working with my husband on and off...going to Denver most everyday! I have looked for a job up here, but haven't gotten one yet.

Before you know it...it will be houses all the way to Wyoming! I-25 is getting really busy even North of Fort Collins now. The traffic on 34 has really picked up since we moved up here. It's crazy! Alot of new homes (big new homes) that people don't realize are going up are being built! My husband and I were out driving around yesterday and you should see all the new condos south of the new box stores that they are putting in.

We used to live off of 120th and Sheridan, so I know where you are talking about! Well, looks like my husband will want to move again!! He longs for the small towns...and for some reason growth just follows us! LOL

Have a great day everyone!

Rosie, I work in a private home. It's a new area -- new homes. I take care of twin 5 y/o's. They are the delight of my life two days a week. They start kindergarten in August and I will be taking care of them 4 days a week, in the mornings. I've had them since soon after they were born. I have their pictures on my Sparkpage. I also have my youngest grandchildren on there. They are also the delight of my life. Those kids are good for my diet. They keep me moving!!

All these towns are so close together that Arvada really is just down the street from me. Somewhere, as I drive to their house, I cross a line that marks one town from the other. In fact, I live real close to that Olive Garden you are talking about. The one I went to last Thursday is on 120th though. We sure had a good time there.

Rosie, you are a funny gal. I like your humor! You do sound like a real cow girl. My type of people.

I'm glad the wind has finally calmed down. It was pretty pleasant this evening.

Some of those cowboys came to town tonight because we had a family dinner at Olive Garden and over 30 showed up. They had to get us another table even though we had reservations. I guess they didn't believe that we could get that many people together.

Are you kidding me..I love cowboys!!! My husband is from Colorado, but lived in Texas for a time..when I met him he drove a big black truck (which he warshed alot)lol wore a black cowboy hat and cowboy boots...ahhhh...it was love at first sight! Roy Rogers and John Wayne are still two of my favorites..and I live in a ranch style house! What does that tell you! I drove a big black Ford Bronco for years...I am a cowgirl wannabe!!!! Give me a home where the buffalo roam!

We were on a job site today east of Fort Collins ( beautiful home ) and the wind about blew us away!! Hold on to your hats!

Stella I do remember them calling Denver a cow town...and I wish it still were also! However, it you want to see a real cow town...come to Greeley! The cowboys are real...and so is the occasional smell!!! But, there is also a true genuine hospitality and a much slower pace that I really enjoy! (West Greeley is booming, so the slow pace won't last for long)

Hope thing are going well for everyone! Have a great day!

Oh Whew! (wipes brow) I'm glad I misunderstood. Living in those huts doesn't sound like fun to me. I know the Massai do. (I saw a lot of them when I was there.) I like my conveniences too much. LOL
SHIRLS2006

No Stella, sorry I didn't make myself very clear. I meant we stay in the thatched huts when we go the game reserves. We're in the city - Durban, or rather a little town that used to be itself (Pinetown) but is now part of Greater Durban. Lots of freeways, malls and traffic and not a zebra in sight!
ESTELLE06
3/26/06 5:46 P

Goodness! That is scary, Shirl. Yes, we were warned all the time about letting anything of value be seen. Also we were warned about never taking pictures of the people because they resent it. I have a friend that goes to Africa every couple of years. She was in a taxi (alone with only the driver)(I believe this was South Africa, too) and she had a camera. She wasn't taking pictures, but I guess, they thought she was and they stopped the taxi and about 8 of them started shaking the cab. and trying to get in. The driver was really scared and so was she but they eventually quit and left her alone. She said it was only by the grace of God that she got away. When I was in Kenya, We did see giraffe and zebra out in the wild, but not in the city. We saw that as we traveled from one town to another. Did you say that you live in a thatched hut? Did I read that right? and you have zebra around? Then you must live on a game preserve, right?

Okiepapa, I do agree with you about age. I feel young in mind, it's just that my back is not in sync with my mind. If I can ever get rid of this back pain, I'll be skipping around here like a kid.

Rosie, it's true. Denver is toooo big. They used to call it a cow town and I used to be insulted when I heard that, but to tell you the truth, I wish it was still a cow town. I pretty much stay in my own part of the city and pretend that it's a small town. Okiepapa, I reckon you've hit the nail on the head there. I feel silly exercising because I see myself as this huge thing lolloping around!
But I went to a braai (barbecue) today for our son's 32nd birthday and a lot of people my age were telling me they go to a gym and some of us (young and old) are joining a line dancing group next week.
Stella, this is a beuatiful country, though one has to go to game reserves nowadays to see the zebras and giraffes (and rhino and hippos) wandering around. We stay in little thatched huts and you have to watch your feet as you walk out in the morning because the zebra sort of have this habit of leaving huge steaming offerings on your doorstep.
The people are fine, but there is immense poverty and the crime rate is very high. On the way home from the braai this eveing one of the women phoned us to say she had just been a victim of a smash and grab - the crooks smashed her car window at a set of traffic lights and made of with her handbag. We had just been talking about how it is not wise to leave a handbag or cell phone on the passenger seat when driving alone. Scary, huh?

I was born and raised in Denver. Went to West but I graduated long before you did. I live in Westminster now. My next door neighbors are Broomfield on one side and Arvada on the other. I have relatives in Milliken, Greeley, Loveland and Fort Collins. I started school in Fort Lupton and went there for the first 4 years. My daughter lives in Granby.

Shirl, South Africa!! That is a loooong way away from where I live!!!! I have been to Africa, though. I went to Kenya in 2001, not too long after the Embassy bombing. It was certainly an interesting trip and I will never forget all that I saw there. We did do a safari and saw all the wild animals. I saw the Great Rift and the millions of flamingos that make the whole area look pink. The most amazing thing to me is that the griaffes and zebras are every where. You don't have to go on safari to see them. The people I met there were so sweet. I know there are mean people in Kenya but the ones I met were very, very sweet and so soft spoken. The sadest part is all the street children. Broke my heart. Is it that way in South Africa. I know that South Africa is much different than Kenya.

Hi Mary. To put up a photo go to My Spark and click on account/e-mail preferences. Towards the bottom of the page there is an icon that you click on to add a profile photo. This is the nicest site for doing this. Other sites I've been on insist that it has to be a ceratin size, but SparkPeople let you upload any size pic and they resize it for you. Also have a look at the personal pages where you can put up a whole gallery of photos and journal entries etc. Much fun!
I am Shirls, live in Durban, South Africa and am 60 years old. A credit manager, I have two and a half years to retirement. I am still trying to figure out how to make myself exercise. Even locked in a room, where my husband can't make fun of me I feel, well, embarrassed about exercising at my size and age. This is a hump I need to get over. So I reckon if I hang around this forum I'll feel more normal about doing it. It's a bit difficult to do much walking here - rather dangerous alone and hubby isn't the walking kind. Though maybe I could persuade him to go to a nature reserve.

I am guilty of living through the lives of my children! Especially my 22 year old. I am always so surprised that even with her health problems she continues to go to college, work, and give so much back to her community! So, I do spend alot of time involved with her life....HOWEVER, I am almost 50 and have decided that it is time for me to let them all go...and do something for myself! That is why I want to lose weight and get to know myself again! I spent alot of years being a stay at home mom...and now I need to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!!!lol

Glad to be back to my 2 hours plus walk. Ending up with a slow 2 1/2 hour walk yesterday after eating our at a buffet restuarant and it seemed to keep me in sinc. Going to the mall today for a couple of hours. Like I sad previously the long walks seem to help my weight loss better than just dieting. Have a good day all!

My walking seems to be paying off. Dropped another pound this week. I really believe the moving is what takes the weight off. Unless you are going to literally starve yourself I don't believe you can lose without activity. I am still not up to my 2 hours every day but I am piece mealing it. Yesterday, I walked a slow 90 minute stroll in the morning and later another 30 minutes so I did get my 2 hours in but not as ambitiously as I had been doing before the bug got me. Anyhow, I was happy to see a weight loss even though it was not as much as last time. Everyone have a wonderful day like I am having today.

Hello,
63, still doing Triathlon who celebrated birth of first great-grandchild with a cycling time-trial of 50 miles inside 3 hours.
One of my favourite people- an 82 year old lady triple jumper lamenting the lack of competition, "People will keep dying!" (How selfish of them! LOL)
People to avoid...those who cannot initiate a conversation without talking about their offspring within the first 2 minutes. People to join...those who cannot initiate a conversation without talking about their antecendants within the first two minutes! The secret is to live one's own life to the full and not second hand through the off spring. Make them proud (and even envious) of your's!

G'day Navywife,
I don't know about the others but I reckon I can celebrate every birthday 'cause I've earned them.
Seriously, keep your dreams. Be willing to be the one who takes the chance and has a go at whatever you want to try. It keep your family and friends on their toes as they never know what you'll be up to. At the same time be interested in all aspects of the life of those younger (you don't have to like it, just know about it and be willing to listen to them and talk if they need to) Finally toss out all the advice you're given except what YOU choose to keep and go along with. How to grow old gracefully??? Good question and I'm the only person I know who hasn't had a mid-life crisis at some age or other. Here's what works for me! This prayer has become my daily mantra:

God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, AND the wisdom to know the difference.

Now, thanks to another member whose name I can't find, I "busted" my first plateau since I began the program about 5 or 6 weeks ago. When I stumbled upon the program, I had lost 12 pounds since mid-December, 2005, at which time I weighed 231; but had hit a plateau at 219.

After 2 or 3 weeks of being stuck at 219, I posted a message to which someone responded and guided me to "plateau busters". Still working full time, I hadn't taken time to explore the entire site and started with the meal planner only. As time permitted, I was checking out other parts of Spark, which is now my homepage on my home computer.

That tip was great for me and I wish I knew where my original post was so I could personally thank the "tipster". Even though it took me another week or so, I finally weighed in at 216 this morning...3 pounds since I joined the program but a total of 15 since mid-December.

Now, I'm back on track with my New Years Resolution to lose an average of 1 pound per week for the entire year.

I love Spark and Spark People!

Great job Ellie!
I joined the program Jan 10th and have been walking a lot here in Michigan. Winter can be pretty at times, but with no leaves on the trees and the grass in hibernation it can get boring with a monocromatic landscape - all shades of white and brown. So glad to see spring come. Golf courses are starting to open and the robins have been here a week. AND, today, I saw the first Dafodil (sp?) sprout in my planting bed! It will not be long now!

I got a little tired yesterday after walking over 2 hours and decided today to cut back to 90 minutes until this pollen is gone here in SC. Since having this terrible cold virus I still have not got all steam back and may have overdone the last 2 days. I got on the scale today although it is not my weigh day until Sunday and wow I lost 2 pounds this week. I had been at a stanstill when I was sick and not exercising. Now I am coming back. I believe the walking is the only way for someone are age to succeed. Everything I have read agrees with my thinking. People over 60 can lose by walking and it is the most pleasant way to do it. Fortunately I live in a place where I can walk outdoors most of the year. Hope you are all as happy as me today.

Hello Everyone

I am 65...it is just a number. I have 3 children, 5 grandchildren, a husband of 43 years and a Beagle named Bogart. I joined sparkpeople 5 weeks ago and have lost 16 pounds.

Walking is not my favorite activity in the exercise department. I do live on a lake and have a waterbike which is most enjoyable to cruise around on. However, living in the Pacific Northwest, the weather isn't always cooperative. So, I have a recumbent bike that I use inside!!!

The goals that you have set for yourselves are great. Doesn't it feel super to be actually achieving them?

Have a wonderful day.

We live at Myrtle Beach and can walk outdoors most of the year. We have several places we really enjoy and probably the biggest thing my DH and I have in common is our love for walking. It took some time to get up to 5 miles. We started with 2 30 minute walks in the neighborhood and than worked up to 2 hours or 5 miles every day. We are not fast walkers and are not too interested in speed at our age. Just love to stroll.
Can't wait till we can get back to it. We have been waling a short walk this week every day and hopefully we can get back to an hour today but my poor husband is having a miserable time coughing. Whaterver this virus was it was a doozy.

Though I'm 62, I sure don't feel like it. My father always had a saying, "you are only as old as you want to make yourself feel"; well, I guess I'm feeling pretty young; I really don't think of being in my sixties, but in my mid twenties or early thirties.

Being around young people makes me feel young mentally, but the weight makes me feel old . I have 5 children between 23 and 42 and am now raising 2 grandchildren---16 and 17--, so I feel like I have had a front row seat to cultural changes over the last half century. It has certainly been interesting and I think it has helped me to maintain a more youthful outlook.

Hi, 63 last week. For the last 30 years I have been adding a prescription about every 2 years. These pills lower blood sugar, lower blood pressure, lower cholestrol, raise mood, manage pain, but they aren't really helping ME, just make it easier for me to eat junk and sit on the couch. So I've decided it's time to help myself. Next year when the family gets together for the annual float trip, I'll be in the raft.
